Hey good painters,
I hate to paint gold. But some aspects of the dark angels I'm working on really require it.
I'm wondering if the problem is actually down to the fact that I'm still using Shining Gold from the old range, which was notoriously awful. A million coats later and the (visible!) little flecks of gold are still being shoved around the surface and leaving brush lines.

Because I hardly ever use it, I don't want to go buying a new pot of New Gold if it's going to be the same level of annoying.

Anyone got any clues about how to better paint gold and/or which to buy, whether it's from another range or whatever?

By the way, I'm 100% not good enough to do NMM and the details that need to be gold are too small for that to work anyway, mostly.

I've thought about mixing Yriel Yellow with Runefang Steel.

Granted I wouldn't try it unless you know it works.

Also thought of Auric Armour Gold with Yriel Yellow.

always found basecoating with brown works well, even with the old shining gold- Ive got the round white lidded hexagonal pot- now THATS old!

Also I have had luck with the new bases from GW, specifically Jokaero orange for golds/yellows/reds. works a treat.

Neat. I haven't used something like that before. Sounds like it would work well.

I did the gold on the crescent on his helmet and the ring on his ankle with:
Screaming Bell
Hashut Copper
Sycorac Bronze
Golden Griffon
Lamenters Yellow

More out of convenience as i don't have the gold colour range.

I like that model. The Agoniser looks beautiful. (Same with the model but I prefer looking at the shiny yellow weapon)

If your pot is that Old then I really suggest getting a new pot, its probably bad and wont cure properly. The best thing to do is to start with brown and paint over that like Darkgreen said. I highly recomend Army Painter paints.

Awesome model Marrath! I couldn't see where the yellow highlight came in until the closeup, but it's really effective.
You're a master of yellow!

Main thing with gold is to use a brown wash with it if its the brighter one. Usually handles a lot of the problem.

Ah, actually makes sense for dark angels in terms of the model looking coherent, since the robes get a brown wash before highlights. Good tip!
