Hey!

Played against Tyranids the other day and our high I got in the way.

Lets see if I can recall it the situation.

My beast unit charged a group of harpies in a narrow corridor (between 2 buildings) and only 3 of my models could stand there at a time. My Khys was in the front with I6 and attacked first killing 7 harpies, we removed the models and then it was time for my Flocks to attack with I5 but I couldnt get close enough to attack any of his models. There was more than 3 inches cross my 2 rows of Khys, so they had to stay behind them and couldnt attack, same goes with the beastmasters, no luck with them.
Then it was his turn at I at 3 or something, he then moved up to my Khys and attacked them, killing 3 I believe.
My question is, was this done correctly? I could have wiped the unit in the first turn of combat if all my units could fight. Got his unit in the third round of combat.

Now that I think about it another question comes to mind. What if my flocks was in the front in 2 rows, blocking the Khys, would their attacks be wasted at I6?

Still have serious problems winning with DE and almost every game my opponent get first blood against me, with AV10 2HP vehicles, it kinda easy for them. Try to hide them but homing missiles, artilleri etc just seem to ruin my day everytime. We also play with some restrictions for all armies, making it very hard for DE.

You played it right. the modelss in BTB and friendly models within 2" of a model in BTB get to attack, no others can. As for the flocks/khym question, as long as the khym are within 2" of a flock in BTB, they can attack at in6.

Please be aware that as beasts, the models ignore terrain, so they could have moved into/ over the buildings to get in BTB with no movement penalty whatsoever (just swing at in 1 unless the baron is with them.) UNLESS the buildings were declared as impassible terrain before the game began.

You played it correctly except that I'm not sure if you took your pile in move for your flocks at your initiative step. You had an additional 3" to see if you could get them into b2b contact with someone and, also, 3" to at least move them in front of the dogs to absorb Harpy hits, which the Razorwings are better at than the Khymerae.

With 7 models removed, and with everyone needing to be basically base to base by the sound of it, it seems like there should have been room for the flocks to get around and into the scrum - though I'll admit I don't know what the terrain and setup looked like.

This is spot on; a lot of people miss the pile in move at the start of your initiative step as its "so not" a 5th edition rule; remember when we took from the back of the melee?

The pile in move is designed for exactly the situation you described-but again without knowing the exact terrain its hard to say. I think you may have spent one round too long in combat, then again it probably saved you from getting shot at  lol!

This aspect hasn't been addressed, so here goes: their attacks would not be wasted, the different types of beasts are all a single unit, so each 'species' of beast needn't be in base-to-base, just any member of the unit.
