So I just purchased a Voidraven, since it is my favorite model in the DE line. I would like to incorporate it into my army, even though I mostly bought it to paint. What sort of use do you find for the Voidraven?

I think thus far anti-aircraft fighter is about it's only regularly agreed upon functionality.

^ Yep.
It's an expensive flying ravager.

I assume you mean Razorwing? There is no model for the void raven bomber...

I was thinking that maybe I missed something and was about to go check out the DE section on the GW website.

Well, rather a Razorwing to convert to a Voidraven. Hehe, sorry about the confusion. Well, given the flyer heavy local meta around here, I think Anti-aircraft is a pretty great function. I've not looked at the numbers yet, but which missiles, if any, should I take?

dont bother for missiles just give it flickerfields you mostly want it as a reliable way to hit fliers the missiles cant do that so just give it a save night shields optional though i usually use them

Seconded. Missiles are a horrid trap with the Voidraven. The only thing that lump of junk should be doing is firing its expensive lances at things. Drop the mine if the opportunity presents itself, but other than that fire lances, you paid for the uber lances, use the uber lances.

So is the consensus that the Voidraven is crap? Cause I hate Ravagers. I wanted a flyer for my meta, so it seemed like a good idea. Not worth it?

That's why I haven't bought one. I don't like taking Ravagers either, but you get two void lances that aren't even twin linked. Meaning you can't even reliably strip a hull point off any flyer worth destroying, and only have a 22% chance to destroy it outright.

For a dark eldar vehicle, it retains the fragility, but simply lacks the firepower you'd expect in a unit that price.

It isn't really crap. Mandrakes are crap. It's unit worth using if you like the look and play of it. But, there are definitely better options. if it had one more void lance, or could drop the void mine more than once, like a hell drake vector strike, I'd be more inclined to use it.

Against flyers, speed is our best weapon, simply moving too close to enemy flyers means they can't shoot you and you can even force them off the table with careful planning.

I have used a void raven (won a tourney with one) but went right back to a third Ravager - point for point the best gun boat we have

My advice: Convert the Razorwing with some larger fins and use it as a 'counts as' Crimson Hunter. Those things can really shoot down flyers!

Unless it gets shot down first. The Crimson Hunter has a nice damage payload, but it folds against enemy shooting even worse than our own flyers.

Hehe, none of that allies nonsense. Especially not our silly cousins. I'll probably run it for a bit, then see if it works out. If not, well, I have the best looking vehicle in the 40k range.

Used correctly, vector dancer makes the hunter much tougher than it first looks

Vector Dancer helps absolutely nothing versus any ground-based AA, like the quadgun or Tau, or enemy flyers arriving from reserve after the Hunter. The problem of the Hunter is arriving too early from reserves before any enemy flyers are on the board.

Exactly. In any game that you go first the chances are pretty high that the Crimson Hunter is going to arrive on turn 2, have nothing worthwhile to shoot at and then get destroyed by enemy flyers when they arrive on their turn. For something that costs more than a Helldrake, that's pretty crap.

I have had a great deal of success with my hunter, using vector dancer to hug the board edge in particular. If you are so worried about it turning up early, an autarch fixes the odds in your favor... But we are getting off topic

Well, that's not disparaging in any way! Without allies my army stands 0 chance against the newer codexes, with them we have given them a run for their money every game I've played. If you want to compete against Tau, Eldar or even some builds of the new Spess Mahreens then you really need the buff that a Farseer brings, and the more resilient scoring units that Windriders represent don't go amiss either.

On a purely fluff basis, there is nothing nonsensical about the two strands of the Eldar race uniting against a common foe, they will come together to fight any of the lesser races, that's for sure.

If you're just going to use the lances, you might as well just take the Razorwing.

I don't think you need allies at all - it just makes things easier

What are thoughts on taking a Razorwing instead of a Voidraven?

Depends on the points and what you're planning to use it for. It's a pretty meta specific choice.

I take it if I can get the points to fit into my list, otherwise I roll with a Voidraven every time. Since our stuff is paper thin to begin with, I always kit out my Voidraven as this:

Voidraven, Flickerfield, 2x Shatterfield Missiles for 175. That way, he can come out, do his damage and if he dies next turn, that sucks but at least I got some use out of him. Like the other forumers have said, you're paying for the uber lances and the extremely conditional, semi-gimmicky Void Mine. If that Void Mine was a large blast (which it should!), we would be having an entirely different conversation.

Otherwise, go with the cheapest Razorwing that you can with just a Flickerfield. He comes stock with 4x Monoscythe missiles and that's what you're paying for.

My current list at 1500 points:

Quote :
1498
16 kp

HQ:
Succubus (VB, Haywire) = 75

TROOPS:
5x Warriors (Raider NS, Blaster) = 130
5x Warriors (Raider NS, Blaster) = 130
10x Warriors (Raider NS/SR, Blaster, SC) = 195
10x Warriors (Raider NS/SR, Blaster, SC) = 195
10x Warriors (Raider NS/SR, Blaster, SC) = 195
9x Wyches (Raider NS, Hekatrix/VB, Haywires) = 193

HEAVY:
Ravager (NS) = 115
Ravager (NS) = 115
Razorwing (FF) = 155

As you can see, I don't have the points for the Voidraven. At 1850, I add 2x Trueborn 3-man Blaster squads in Venoms and upgrade the Razor to a Voidraven. Give the Succubus an Agonizer/VB combbo and call it a day.
