Don't know if this would work, but I won't have to worry about flyers.


Here's what I came up with.

Hq

Hammy /w liqifier gun= 60 pts

Elites

4 grotesques /w liquifier gun= 150 pts

Raider /w sails= 65 pts

Troops

5 10 man wrak squads /w 2 liqifier guns= 120 pts each

5 raider /w sails= 65 pts


HS

x2 Chronos Parasite engines /w spirit vortex= 100 pts each

Talos pain engine= 100 pts

Not sure if I shuold do 3 parasite engines or not.

If it is a fan list, it's ok. But I think it's not competitive. Poor AV options and no AA. The monsters are too slow and your main killing power are Wracks. They are fine, but the assault is such a dangerous thing in the 6th. A Tau army behind a barricade will table you.
Use some shooty guys. For such a list it's enough 2-3 squads of Wracks. And don't take more than 1 Cronos. It's just a supporting unit. I would also recommend you to take a couple of scourges with haywire blasters as a reliable AV option. By the way these guys fit the coven list well, as scourges are the main Haemunculi clients Smile

Well I'm not worried about flyers since most of my opponets don't have them.

THe thought was to troll a tau player friend of mine who runs mostly firewarriors and 2 squads of crisis suits including an hq version, 2 hammerheads and 2 broadsides. Sometimes one to two squads of kroot. Since he's so infanty heavy, I figured if I could get first turn I could get into his deployent zone turn one, and whatever survives one turn of firepower will just assualt him like crazy.

I'll remove a pain engine for a second talos.

How big should the scrouge squad be?

Assaulting Tau is a suicide. First he will blow up your raiders. Some of wracks die. Then he will shoot at them. Most of them will die. As you will charge he will shoot his super deadly Tau overwatch. If someone will survive this, that would be a miracle.

Regarding scourges I usually run 10 men squad with 4 hw-blasters. It's 3 glancing hits for sure. Some players use 5 men squads with 2 hw-blasters for 130 points as a supporting unit. It's also great for smaller games.

If your going to run three pain engines, you would be better off with 2 talos and one cronos, the cronos needs to get a pain token on the talos ASAP. Your lacking a lot of ranged AT, but to be honest against tau most of our ranged doesn't last.

I wouldn't bother with the sails, but I would get an aberration with a venom blade to soak challenges for your heami (who should bring a power axe btw as it adds much needed AP2 to the squad). I would also consider upgrading him to an ancient as the extra WS and A will double his damage output, and the bump to LD9 will make the grotesques a lot less likely to get pinned when their transport inevitably goes down, I5 is another nice boost as it helps the squad with sweeping advance.

When you deploy make sure you have some spare raiders set up near your grotesque unite in case their transport gets destroyed.

Well it was just an idea, I figured if I had 5 squads of wraks going at him, and then the grotesques, it wouldn't be that easy for him to kill everything before getting assualted. Is there overwatch that strong? I thought even if they support fire, they can't shoot more then once on overwatch.

Considering you will rarely ever have to worry about KPs thne unless you want to add another FA I see no reason to run then as 2 squads instead of three, three gives greater flexability.

I think it would be better to drop most of your scourges in order to take more Wracks, because most of them will die before the assault. Moreover Wracks is your main killing unit while scourges will just support you in vehicle destroying. I took Acothysts to increase leadership, which is very important in close combat and passing pinning tests. Even if your raider is wrecked and not exploded you will need to pass this test.
