After getting gutted and set on fire by an IG mechnised army, I've been thinking

4 Trueborn with blasters and a Close combat archon in a venom?
Not as fighty as incubi by far, but no slouch in assault either, and a big chunk of Anti Tank, aybe even give the archon a blaster?

Depends what you're fighting. Put em up against combat specialists or marines and you'll get minced (well, you'll end up with the archon on his own at least). If you're fighting guard then you should come out on top.

Honestly, I wouldn't run my archon with trueborn.I'd run themseperate. Maybe put my blasterborn in a venom with a dracon who has a power weapon if you are afraid of combat and either put the archon in a raider with 9 wyches or in a venom with 4 brides. You could kit your wyches and brides out with haywire grenades so you will have a your anti Infanty and anti tanks.

You could put haywire grenades on the trueborn as well, meaning if they don't shoot it to death, (assuming you are close enough), you could jump out and glance them to death, which is a lot of fun. I wouldn't stick the archon in, as stated by the other guys.

dracon with venom blade is fine for fighting against guard tbh. he has plenty of attacks and will choppy chop a good few on his own.
Tbh though, if you want to commit trueborn to combat with guard you can do, but it's better to just take wyches/bloodbrides for this role, they get an invul save and combat drugs

My trouble is, blood brides offer me nothing that wyches dont.
I had been taking equal numbers of wyches and kabalites, with blood brides on top.
I'm thinking of taking 6 wych / haywire / Venom units, and replacing my usual blood brides with blasterborn.

Wyches are as good at tank hunting as blood brides, and although trueborn are not as killy in combat as BBs, they are not much worse either, down one attack (which they could get, but I want blasters), one initiative and up one Armour

One Trueborn once got charged by Anrakyr the Traveller and killed him before he got the chance to strike. Such things can happen....

The extra attack is nice but never build for it.

Sorry what I meant was blood brides get one more attack than trueborn because they have pistols and knives.
Not that trueborn get one more attack than kabalites

Three Blasters needs three troop choices, or one elite.
But I'm worried my archon needs some extra CC muscle in a tight spot. Maybe three blasterborn, a whip dracon and a tooled up archon?

if you need CC backup for your archon then you're looking at the wrong unit. You'll need either incubi or grotesques to back him up. both are significantly better in combat than trueborn. i cant think of any units in DE that work particularly well in a multifunction role.
take blasterborn for blasting things, take incubi/grots/beast packs/pain engines for stabbing things

Trueborn can take on tau and guard in CC but thats about it. think about ho hard it is to take down guardsmen at T3 5+, and then look at trueborn. yup t3 5+. at least wyches get the 4++ and drugs

Yeah generally speaking you are much better of not trying to make units like trueborn multi-role as doing so makes them expensive and they don't have any inherent survivability to protect that investement.

I've run my killy archon with trueborn at low pts levels simply because it was the only space available and I love the archon. Honestly its a conflicted unit though more hwg can be welcome if they're kept cheap and disposable. If you're in a similar boat then I would say lose the combat setup I know you prefer or even try out the duke. If tooling up for armies like Mech IG the archon is kinda wasted anyway while blasterborn will probably be a one use only unit vs IG. These reasons is why I like grotesques + hwg archon but that requires a raider.

Yeah i'll go with that. even then the reavers seem to be dependent on a good drugs roll. talos is a beast :-)
