PostSubject: +1 coversave on facing question   +1 coversave on facing question I_icon_minitimeMon Sep 10 2012, 09:27

I was given a hard time last night about the fact that I wanted a +1 om my coversave, because he was facing the side of the Ravager, but could only see the front. He asked me how I decide what's the front and what's the side. A square tank is easy. But I could make my side smaller or larger depending on what suits me best at the moment.

How do you guys play it?

I do have an idea ofcourse. I'll make a rectangle from paper, the size of the ravager. Then from the center I'll make straight lines to the corners (which should give me 90 degrees). It'll function as a template to decide the facing of the vehicle. This would be the most fair I think.

What do you guys think?

The rulebook tells us to draw two imaginary lines through the corners of the vehicle but the raider is essentially triangular. If we instead draw two lines from the front of the vehicle to the rear corners and extending beyond that, anything coming from between those lines hits the rear armour and anything else hits front/side. As none of our vehicles have a different front armour to side armour this makes no difference.

I'm not talking about armour. Smile

It makes a difference for claiming that +1 on your coversave (page 75). Basically what you propose now is if you put your Raider sideways and the opponent can only see your prow, you still don't get to claim +1 coversave because he sees your side (which is the direction he's facing from). Understand what I mean? We'd never be able to claim that +1 coversave, while actually it should be easier for us because of the slim design of our hulls! That would be very odd.

Sorry, I misunderstood you. Really not sure how this one can be resolved.

It's a difficult one, isn't it. And you got me thinking about armour and your proposed solution would be troublesome for armour aswell. Right now the front and side AVs are the same, but what if they weren't. All vehicles have 4 facings. So i don't even think it's legal to make it 3 facings as you described. So the more I think about it, the more I feel that we should make a template as described above. How else are we going to solve this?

Thanks GW for yet another vague rule.

It's been like this for a while... Infact I think this rule is a direct copy paste from 5th Ed.

What I have been doing is exactly what you describe, a rectangle under the skimmer the length and width of its widest points, then working facing from that

Oh I agree, it's not as if it has never been in there. But I never made any trouble before. Just now with 6th in which I want my +1 coversave it is a problem, because stakes just got higher. And I'm facing more tournamentplayers than before (always have steered clear of them for obvious reasons).

So yeah... I guess I'll be making that template then.

Well i just looked at my raider and found it relative easy to decide what is front and what not,

first of, if you look down on a raider, what do you see?

__________eTe_______________________eTe__________________
_______eeeeTeeee_________________eeeeTeeee_______________
___eeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeee__________
_eeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeee______

___eeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeee_________
_______eeeeTeeee_________________eeeeTeeee_______________
__________eTe_______________________eTe__________________

I would draw the line, where i placed the "T"s. Its easy to make out, and if you look at your raider from the front you will only see the front up to the T-Line. Visa Versa from the back.

But i had to lock at my raider.

And if you just want the +1 coersave its most times easyer to cover the front, and expose the side.

That's how I've been playing it, crazy irish. There are four corners on the Raider, so just use those. Draw the lines diagonally through them like this though:

__________eTe_______________________eTe__________________
_______eeeeeeeTe_________________eTeeeeeee_______________
___eeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeee__________
_eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee______
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee__
_eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee______
___eeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeTeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee_________
_______eeeeeeeTe_________________eTeeeeeee_______________
__________eTe_______________________eTe__________________

This shape makes the side arcs very wide (even more than the picture here indicates, since the Raider is skinnier). But notice how little of the vehicle's hull is actually considered part of its side facing. You could hide it behind cover only 3.5" wide, and the side would be entirely hidden. You'd get +1 cover even though almost all of the front and rear armor is visible.

Thanks for the help guys. The diagrams make it very easy to consult with the opponent. Guess I'll have to print those out and show 'm in battles from now on (lol). Good news, the people I play regularly with agree with the diagrams, so atleast it's resolved so far.
