PostSubject: Kamakazie run or; how I learned to stop worrying and love the prow   Kamakazie run or; how I learned to stop worrying and love the prow I_icon_minitimeSun Jun 03 2012, 23:31

So a couple weeks ago I had a game versus the new necrons. and for a change of pace, I decided to equip my raider with aethersails and.. shock prow.

What ended up happening was I got a 4 on the prow roll, and a full 12 on the sails' movement. My target: an annihilation barge 30 inches away. I ended up bifurcating the thing.

Did I have anyone inside the raider at the game start? nope. I had it deployed right in the middle where everyone could see it and told the opponent I had trueborn in it. The opponent deployed his other vehicle, a command barge directly ahead, in clear LOS.

I smiled, knowing about the dirty little trick I was going to pull with Malys and the Duke.

I yanked that raider back into reserves, and redeployed the trueborn on the board edge, in cover, and kept the raider for deep-striking. Once the game was underway, in dropped the raider, ready to go. So what if it couldn't shoot.. the opponent was too busy trying to shoot everything else.

"set course for that barge, maximum speed. Engage." and away we go. passing everyone left and right and smack right in the face of that barge. 30 inches plus what I got for that prow gave me an impact at a staggering str 14 hit while taking a puny str 3 hit. Flickerfields? I don't need them when speed is my shield

It almost feels like I just sucker punched the guy. Very Happy

did you at least whoop and wave a cowboy hat like you were busting a bronc' (or a descending H-Bomb) as you rammed him?

Can someone fill me in on the rules for this?

1. I thought the max strength in the game is 10 - tank shocking included.

2. When you tank shock you receive back the +1's for the distance moved and the monolith has 14 armour so +4 above 10. So you should have received a str 10 hit back?

EACH vehicle immediately suffers a hit against the armour facing....+1 for Each full 3" moved that turn by the rammer before impact"
I don't know the AV of the Command Barge or what you rolled for the bonus of the shock prow, but you should have taken a S10 hit based on your movement alone. Check the section again on ramming. Raiders slamming into anything at 30" per turn pretty much need a miracle to not explode on impact. Evil or Very Mad

Also, you would take an extra 3 strength on that hit (assuming you could surpass S10) because of the command barges AV13 (assuming quantum shields was still active).

Not sure if the ram was performed right so I just want to say that the raider that deepstruck is allowed to fire its darklance on the turn it deepstrikes.

The ramming action, I do not know if it was done right but I just know it still does not appeal to me - the darklance is just as productive, no?

It's pretty useful for tankshocking (oh, the wonderful tankshocks) and for making it a guided missile when the laser stick breaks.

This ^^. But I'm afraid pretty much everything in the opening post is wrong.

4 on the prow roll? The prow gives D3 (unless you meant a roll of 4 on a D6 for 2 on D3?)

Thanks to being a fast skimmer you can still shoot when you arrive from DS

AFAIK there is nothing in the ramming rules that lets you take your Strength above 10, so really, with AV12 from the prow, all you really need is to be travelling 24" or more to reach maximum impact

You kinda did, but possibly not in the right way.

I see nothing in the rules of ramming that says you cannot go above str 10.... However, it should have been a str 12 hit not 14. Shock prows are d3 not d6

The rules for statistics say that you cannot exceed S10

If you're talking on page 6, the first line of the paragraph before that says "For all models except vehicles".

Granted, but the following paragraph forbids any modifier from raising any characteristic above 10. The paragraph you're referring to is intended (IMO) to allow for AV values, which of course do rise above 10. As usual with GW, they really could have written it better.

can't go over strength 10 for shooting

just follow the math in the book.

Quote :
4 on the prow roll? The prow gives D3 (unless you meant a roll of 4 on a D6 for 2 on D3?)

a roll of four on a d6 translates to two on a D3 roll. 1-2 =1, 2-3 = 2, 3-4 = 3

Quote :
raiders slamming into anything at 30" per turn pretty much need a miracle to not explode on impact

At that point it doesn't matter what the strength is, because the lance was already destroyed, no passengers were inside, and it turned out to be a great way to destroy a vehicle.

The maximum of 10 does not refer only to shooting. And if you mean 2 on a d3 then you're probably better off saying that, just for the sake of clarity. Avoids any confusion.

While you might indeed be right about the intention of the rules, this whole section is about model characteristics - there's nothing here that clearly suggests that a hit (as for impact) can't exceed S10. Nor is there anything on p.69 (the ramming rules) that places a limit here.

Hey, it took them 20 years to start putting indexes into some of their books. We can't expect everything. Razz

Whether or not a ramming hit is restricted to Strength 10 the way characteristics are is indeed unclear in the manual, but is is addressed in the FAQ for the 5E rulebook:

Quote :
Q: Can a ramming vehicle’s Strength go above 10? (p69)
A: No, only a vehicle’s Armour Value makes exception to the ‘Maximum 10’ rule for characteristics.
