PostSubject: Incubi finecast questions   Incubi finecast questions I_icon_minitimeMon May 07 2012, 10:16

Before I lose my sanity and dwindle into a rant I thought I'd collect my thoughts and hit my fav forum.

So, i bought a box of 5 Incubi (finely). And next to the Archon and Lelith I don't have much experience with Finecast. Next to the fact it looks like a mess compared to plastic I also seem to ruïn the my miniatures myself. I clipped a spike of the leg trying to clean it with the knife. I broke the sword trying to clip it from the sprue. And... I dunno, it just looks like a lot of clean up work. I'm afraid of ruïning it even more with my knife.

It this just me? I know I'm not a fantastic hobbyist. Am I doing something wrong? I don't like finecast up untill so far... Gimme metal which I can hack/grind/saw/file untill it does exactly what i want.

Use Ebay and buy metal bawkses of Incubi.

Well resin is like that, delicate material. Hope you are using specialised knife for hobby.
Finecast does indeed requires as much cleaning work as metal, if not more.

And again i would advise specialised cutters. Man, those things saved me so many time, i was wrong when i didnt buy them from the start.

You are not alone. I did in fact have quite similar problems with finecast, funnily enough manely with the incubi ones - many other finecast have been (at least relatively) good, but the finecast incubi were a hell to work with, so I searched out some in metal.

I'd say you should at least ask at where you bought the box (I assume it was a GW?), explain the problem and see if you could get them replaced, or try and find metal incubi, as they are several times easier to put together.

Thanks for answering Azdrubael and Saintspirit.

Glad to read I'm not the only one, makes me feel better. Funny also that both of you advice me to find the metal ones. So let the rant on finecast once again commence. Evil or Very Mad

As for the knife. I'm using Army Painter's knife. Works fantastic on plastic, but Finecast is like... flexible. So if you push a little harder you slice off half the spike or whatnot.

What clipper do you have Azdrubael? I use Army Painter's blue precision clipper.

I looked at Citadel's clean-up kit, but I thought... Rubbish for that kind of money.

Let me mention again though, that there is finecasts that I think are good or at least okay. When speaking about dark eldar, f.ex., the wracks I bought were just fine! Well, not that I have that many finecasts, but I hope you get my point. In any case, as it seems there is something wrong with how the incubi has been made. The klaives are ridiculously fragile, I think.

Well indeed the klaive broke by simply severing the 1st connection with the clipper. Well i'm not a fan of finecast right now. We'll see how it is once I get to Wracks.

I bought two boxes of incubi, 1 failcast and 1 metal. The failcast ones were very brittle and broke at the slightest touch while as the metal ones work and look great.

Its not you failing with the knife, Its failcast failing.

Stupid failcast. Why GW?

Glad I'm not alone though.

Still wanna see a box of Wracks. If they turn out like this aswell, i'll hunt down metal miniatures from now on.

About 3-4 months ago, I started using cuticle scissors/nippers like these below. They are very easy to cut bitz off the sprue with, especially the really fine, delicate pieces as they are very sharp-edged. You can also often get very close to the piece with them and make a cleaner cut with less clean up.

When workinjg with resin it might be a good idea to warm material a bit, not to the point where it melts and you can bend it, but close to it.

I had a problem with the first box of Incubi and had to return them. The mold was misaligned. I opened the second box in the shop, and they're ok. They'll still take a lot of clean up work when I get around to working on them.

I finally have an update and I've taken ElfSpeaker's post as a context. You sir actually got me looking at the models thinking: "This can't be right."

Remember I said I had problems cleaning all the little spikes and bits with my knife? Excess finecast EVERYWHERE. That's the problem!
Remember the broken sword? Weak spots on ALL the swords!
I found clumps of finecast in between the legs, so i couldn't even discern where the cloth started and ended.
I found holes on places where there shouldn't be holes.
And now the kicker.... 8 out of 10 backpacks were cast wrong! As if the molds were indeed misaligned.

Long story short, I wrote a long e-mail to GW with a Words document with pictures in it, pointing out all the stuff that is wrong. They are sending a new box in 5 to 7 workdays.

I'll let you guys now how that turns out. I hope I have the box soon. Can't wait!

Glad to hear that they offered a replacement (received it yet?).

One thing GW have always been good at is correcting errors, often it seems sending a whole kit to replace a missing part (though not sure if that's ever happened to me). Given all the stories I've heard about Finecast, this replacement policy is being stretched to its limit, but it sounds like it's needed!

(I've yet to try Finecast. All plastic for me!)

@Ben_S: Trust me, the replacement policy is needed. And if you want my opinion, go metal + plastic and avoid finecast. This is now my opinion and I'm even considering quiting GW altogether. Because...

Update: F-ing unbelievable!! I litteratly JUST got my replacement box @ work, where I still am (so it's still fresh hence the strong language) and there's still a lot of stuff wrong! Upon my first glance I really thought that the replacement box was much much better. And a lot of stuff is 2 be perfectly honest and not just ranting...

There's no abudant excessive finecast so I can make out very well where each part begins and ends which is better when I need to clean it up. I'm very happy with this and you can now see the details much more crisp and clear. BUT...

1) Now I don't have 1 wrong sword, but f-ing 2! The handles at the 2nd hand is completely missing this time @ both swords! Not even just broken while shipping, but completely missing due to wrong casting!
2) One sprue is totally covered in finecast-film. I can actually live with this. It's not very hard to clean because the individual parts are casted clean this time. But still, it's not supposed to look like that. It's just not right!
3) 1 set of backpacks is completely casted misaligned AGAIN. Granted, instead of having 8 from 10 backpacks miscasted 2 outta 10 is an improvement. But... WTF GW?!

I'm going to be lucky if I can salvage 4 Incubi (+ perhaps squeeze out a Klaivex due to broken swords) out of 10 models! Is this not ridiculous?? A box of 5 models cost 26 pounds, 28 euros and 30 dollars! Think about it... I'm so pissed right now... I'm going to stop typing.

I feel your pain TL. Bought three Necron special characters, all defective. Received three replacements, all defective. And I mean broken in the blister.

I swore I would never buy metal unless I absolutely had to, now I'm actually starting to look for it in preference.
