I'm about to play my Eldar friend, and I'm using Harlequins for the first time. As they'll be one of very few units starting on the table, they're bound to be targetted by the Swooping Hawk grenade pack when they arrive from reserve. I've put a Shadowseer with them, so I get the Veil of Tears power. Will this have any effect against the grenade pack, as range isn't measured? In addition to this, should my friend be subtracting ballistic skill from the shot, as it strikes me that it's always indirect fire, even if they're landing in line of sight 6" away?

Veil of tears only prohibits targeting a unit. The Grenade pack simply places a blast marker, so I concluded, that VoT doesn't work against it.
The same about scatter, firers BS is only subtracted, if the weapon follows the BRB Blast Weapon rules, but the Grenade Pack doesn't.

Thanks for that - that's what we ended up deciding anyway, although he didn't end up targeting the Harlies. Which, incidentally, were totally useless for the purpose I fielded them for, which was hiding the WWP Haemonculus in. We rolled for mission and deployment, did everything properly, and ended up with Dawn of War in table halves, so I could get right in his face but not quite as in his face as I wanted, and couldn't start elites on the board! Ended in a draw, which I was extremely lucky to get!

In lists with Harlequins and WWP's it is ok to intend on using the Harlies as your main escort but I still have a spare troop choice just in case. My lists with harlies usually have 2 wrack squads that I intentionally will put into reserve, a squad on a raider and a squad on foot. This gives me 3 options to put 2 haemys into (or 2 haemys into 1 squad) depending on the opponent, terrain and mission. Most times I have one portal carrier on a raider and another on foot and I try for one really aggressive portal location and another that backs it up but not as aggressive. Reason being sometimes the opponent likes to surround a portal and the 2nd portal is usually placed so units emerging can charge the surround portal.

If you are only running 1 portal then it makes things simpler to just have 1 wrack squad on a raider on standby (or whatever troop choice you favor). I run two portals and thus like having several options to escort the portal no matter what the mission is. I only mention wracks cuz I do like them but they are not for everyone. I like is the extra token, their toughness and the liquifier/poison attacks - to me they are the perfect "camper" minus the marshmallows. They escort the portal and once the portal is down they head for an objective other wise they are either cleaning up left over enemy squads or combo charging with a portal unit.

For your example in Dawn of War:

The Harlies go into reserve and will use the portal. This option is always open but when I include harlies it is mainly to escort the wwp especially against gunline or aggressive opponent where if they are not shooting all 2000 points at me they are charging 2000 points at me and there is no need to get really aggressive with the portal location.

If I go first in the turn then 1 Haemy will be placed with the squad on foot while the other Haemy and wracks on a raider move first turn and will most likely place a portal in the 2nd turn.

If I go 2nd in the turn then usually a Haemy is placed with the wracks in a raider and they might start on the board or just arrive 1st turn (move 12" from board edge, disembark and place portal) depending on how aggressive the opponent is. If you do decide to move onto the board on turn 1 then you can put both Haemys in the wracks on a raider (making them fearless) and when you disembark can try to spread out your formation to get the portals as far apart as possible (or hold on to 1 and move the squad turn 2 to drop the 2nd portal).

I remember one game this happened and the Harlies came out of the portal and jumped into the wracks raider that somehow was not blown apart. Sure, the opponent freaked and wrecked the raider from under their feet but still anything can happen.
