Is there a set number for requirement of troop choices in 1000 pt? 1500 pt? 2000pt armies? If so, what are they for DE?

Yeah, it's not per codex. It's a general rule in the rulebook. 2 troop slots are obligated and 1 HQ slot.

Indeed. HQ + 2 Troops.
However, don't allow to be fooled - some armies can pick more than 1 "foot" unit in one slot. Like marines, they can combat squad their 10 man squads and while they DO count as separate units for game purposes, they are picked in one slot and hence don't fill mandatory 2 Troop choices. I know people that tried that.

Also it's worth to know "real" maximum troop unit cap since it actually depend on codex.

So for example Tyranids and Daemons get 6, other "alien" armies can field up to 12 (6 units + 6 transports), Marines up to 18 (2 combat squads per slot + transport) and Guard... let's see, 1 Platoon command with tank, 5 infantry units with tanks, 5 heavy weapon teams, 3 special weapons + conscripts on top, holy crap, up to 126 separate units (21x6).

Ork, you just made me mad there are no Guard players in my local groups. I would love to mow down all those bodies and declare peace through superior firepower.
