I have officially purchased the following after trading in some of my other tabletop armies that no longer get played. I want the list to be versatile and competitive enough to have a good chance against all of the armies. I am new to 40k but did research before purchasing the stuff.

The list will focus fire on things that are big threats such as riptides etc... first and slowly advance up the field. I think it has a good balance of lances and anti-infantry and the only thing I would change is scourge to trueborn if I had the points. Will this list serve me well as a balanced competitive list?

I left my DE book at work but I am pretty sure they give more movement, so I could move farther and still fire.

Is there anything I can do to make it better? I thought about running all venoms but I think having a couple extra lances would help kill more first turn so they would have less to return fire with if things go well.

sails give 24" Flat out move therfore you can not shoot the round you use it.

Great for an assualt unit like raider full of grots, but useless on a shooty squad

Honestly mate 2 DL's on a pair of raiders will not add a huge amount - last night i had the same - 2 raiders with a DL on each and in two game turns i managed to take one hull point and Crew Shake a LR. Though in all honesty i was Turn 1B and both raiders had Jink'd to try and save the occupants - which they did but still got immobilised

For which you paid a grand total of 10 pts? Against a 250 pt land raider.

Individually a dark lance may not achieve much, but when taken wherever they are available they're much more effective. Statistically you're looking at a lance only blowing up a vehicle like a land raider once in 27 shots - if you have 13-14 of them you've got a decent chance of blowing it up in two turns (although unless you get lucky by that time it'll be dead anyway through hull point loss - you only need 12 shots to statistically achieve 4 hull points)

Yeah i get your point, more the better - and its simple weight of dice coming in. But i kind of feel (and tbh my meta is BA, and only BA at the moment Sad man i need to find some other armies to play!!) that putting that many shots into 1 vehicle is far too much.

And lets face it i didnt pay 10 points for those two laces - i paid upwards of 150 points - needed the raider in the first place, and i know the raider has the dual purpose of transporting, but had i have paid the 135 for the ravager id have had a similar result.

I will get round to writing a DL/blaster heavy list again and giving that a go - see if i can restore some of my faith in them hehe - just wanna play about with the coven for a bit first lolz

I guess it's a philosophical point - I take ravagers anyway and I need raiders for my warrior squads. Would I take the raiders if I didn't need the lances? Yes, i would, ergo I view it as paying 5 points each for the lances on the raiders.

Have at look at the chronicles link in my sig - my last two games have been against (admittedly non optimised) armour lists using guard. My 1850 list, which starts 9 lances on the table with another 2 on a razorwing and also sporting deep striking heat lances and haywire blasters tabled (or would have without a concession) them both, on turn 5 and turn 3. blasters and more particularly dark lances (the blasters achieved nothing in either game) when taken in fairly large quantities and supported by other, more specialist, weapons are highly effective.

I am glad you have had luck with some extra lances TBE, do you run venoms as well or just raiders? I am not saying I would unload everything into 1 target but it would be nice to be able to target things that you know might give you fits early on and dark lances seem to be the best option.

I bring a couple of venoms, though they rarely last that long in a game (AV10 and only 2 hull points makes them ideal targets in my opponents eyes, without having to dedicate too much fire to get rid of them)

My overall list (1850) brings a complete mix of units to allow for all possibilities - there are 3 raiders, 2 ravagers and a razorwing for lance fire, two small warrior squads with blaster in venoms, 2 gunboat warrior squads with splinter racks, a haywire scourge squad, a heat lance scourge squad, a squad of grotesques, 6 reavers with blasters and cluster caltrops, a wwp combat archon and Urien.

the way the list is put together, it can target armour heavy lists because there are lots of different units with AT capability (against armour lists, I'm first looking to incapacitate through getting penetrating hits and making them snap fire, then mop up with the rest of my fire) or against a list with just a couple of significant armoured targets it can gang up on them and (at best) it can pour 11 dark lances, 4 blasters, 1 blast pistol, 4 haywire blasters and 4 heat lances into a single target if necessary (superheavies?) That's 24 anti tank shots, and it still retains firepower from 20 warriors with rerolls to hit, 4 splinter cannons and the combat potential of the grotesques for anti infantry shooting.

I'd hope never to need that many AT shots, but I believe in redundancy (until the last game, i ran two spare raiders kitted identically to the gunboat transports just in case they got wrecked!).
