PostSubject: New DE codex on the horizon? really?   Wed Apr 16 2014, 13:25

Ok, just to let you all know, I am a firm believer in GW's 11 year codex policy on Dark Eldar, and that we have many many years yet before we see a new codex.

BUT, that being said, This rumor popped up, and from a source that has nothing to do with DE at all in any way, so it is not a wishlisting type of thing.

So, please chew on some salt tablets and gander at this "release schedule"

Quote :
Orks -> BA -> DE -> SW -> Crons -> GK

This marks the first time I have seen a new DE dex mentioned outside of this forum.

Deny, confirm or get excited or depressed as you see fit.

And they are/were GWs biggest selling army.

Also, lets not forget how often we heard news of a new Codex being "soon" before the last one. What was it in the end, eight...nine years?
And each of those years brought fresh "new Codex coming soon" rumours over the horizon.

If it was up to me, I'd go Orks, SW/BA, DE, SW/BA, GK, Necrons. It's a trade off - wolves are an older book, but they've aged much better than Blood Angels. Either way, 6 codices remain in softback, arguably it's only realistically 5 as Necrons were done for 6th edition. With 8 months to go, and likely four books in that time, I'd say that the odds on a new Dark Eldar book by the end of the tear are favourable.

It would make sense that SW and DE are/might being/be released next to one and another.

Why do you think so MurDok? They are not fluff related nor are they likely to appear in a new Starter Box (we've had a rumour about BA/Orks for quite some time, eh?!). Are you saying because they're both Phil Kelly dexes? Well, sorry to disappoint but nowadays Codices are done by "the Design Team" as a whole instead of individual authors. I suspect this has to do with all the hate Ward received from the community.

Personally I suspect the reason for the codices being written by "The Design Team" as opposed to indiidual authors is more to do with the fact that they're releasing them much quicker than they were. With a collaborative effort they can release books more quickly (plus there is theoretically less chance of a power creep between books). Besides, GW famously don't listen to the community on most things. It'd be very out of character for them to start now.

There's no reason to suppose that DE wouldn't get a new codex by the end of the year. How far it would go towards fixing some of the problems we have is impossible to say, seeing as a lot of them were issues before 6th edition came around anyway. Incubi not having grenades, mandrakes in general, fragile transports and flimsy scoring units weren't made more or less of an issue by a new edition for the most part, so we'll have to wait and see if they listen to the community on those  Wink

Calm down Dogmat, I only said that because DE and SW share a rich history of fluff. One piece that stands out in my head can be found in our current dex, pg 22 titled "Thieves of the Ice Mist".

I remember one phrase from Phill Kelly. The army is defined not only by its strenghts, but also by their weaknesses.

There will always be things like this...and we would always strive to negate them. Unless, of course, we strive to bring Greater Good to all and everyone.

I agree: if we got Power Armour and Wave Serpents, we wouldn't be DE anymore!

I do hope they fix Mandrakes, however: having just watched that episode of Game Of Thrones with the Red Priestess' "baby", I thought it was the embodiment of what Mandrakes should be, and it would be lovely to field them in the spirit of their design; old Ymgarl deployment mechanic maybe, with either assault from arrival, or maybe automatically causes pinning to a nearby enemy unit.

Every army and unit should have weaknesses though. E.g marines good stats good saves but high cost . Wyches should be good at assaulting both vehicles and infantry but weak when caught in the open. Incubi should have assault grenades as their an assault unit. Imo.

I don't mind being so fragile, however we do need better firepower if we want to hold up on our own.

The way releases are at the moment with dataslates and supplements, if we don't get a codex in a year or two it will feel like another ten years.

Chaos space marines have had what three codexes/supplements released before we've had one? Space marines two, tau two, eldar two. Escalation dropped and we didn't even get all of the eldar's scraps, just the revenant titan. And then if you count a dataslate as something like 1/10th of a codex since it's a unit formation, that's a lot of releases in between codexes. At that pace our codex will get dated quickly, as if you've seen the helbrute dataslate, you'll see how a data slate can make a mediocre to crappy unit useful.

And from a competitive standpoint, we could use another edition to give us more ally options. I don't particularly want it fluff wise, but that's the nature of the game at the moment.

But! I digress. Update or no I can't stop playing with my space addict/pirate/strippers.

I wasn't being aggressive or offensive there, no need to calm down. If it came along that way i apologize. I will agree with you that both fluffs are very elaborate and offer plenty of material to work with for a new dex design.

I too am sry Dogmar a misunderstanding on my part, and I fully agree. I truly think they need to let is have a functional Webway Portal again.

People not arguing on the internet is the most awkward thing I've ever seen as they each struggle to sound the least aggressive and since it's impossible to pick up in text they just come across as super BETA. I mean I prefer it to arguing but it's just so painful to read lol

Well, in Germany we have a saying that roughly translates to "the tone is what makes the music", basically saying that a sentence can either have a friendly or offensive meaning depending on pronounciation - which is kinda hard to convey through text.

But if you miss the swearing and arguing, let me get back on you, you [insert excessive swearing here], if you think we'll get a codex in the next month you're a [more swearing] Very Happy [/sarcasm]

Sorry, I couldn't resist, as I find the point you raised very amusing. It is indeed unusual for the internet to be polite.

Anyway, as not to derail this thread further I'll say this: Usually they do a big 40k release every second month, with possibly something else for summer holidays and christmas leaving us with 3-4 40k releases for the year. With crons and GK being the newest softback books I could see them as the ones GW will do last, which would in turn mean that chances are high for our book.

We know, however that GW is a salesmen company and they will do first whatever sells best, which could put either GK or Crons before us. Keeping the current pace, we can safely say though that we are very very likely to receive a new book by 2nd quarter of 2015.

I will say that we probably qualify last from a model standpoint (except maybe necron). I mean we still have a great,  up to date looking model range so I don't really see us as a big release. GW has said time and again it is a model company first and foremost;normally right before or after shafting the customer.  I'll be happy to see any release for a xenos army with such a minority consumer base.

In that regard I'm happy for the seerstar lists as cheesy as they are. Hopefully they've bumped sales enough to remind GW that there's a whole neglected branch of their customer base just waiting to give them money lol

No worries, edited it for you. Cheers - Cavash.

To be honest I wouldn't mind seeing Space Wolves dropped entirely, they are the real clowns of 40k. Anyhow though I would like to see DE get a codex after Orks. After the last update DE kind of boomed in popularity due to the amazing range of kits they got. Not to mention they seem intent on getting every army in 40k and WHF in a hardback codex.

I don't mind Space Wolves. Vikings in space is pretty cool to me. I'm just confused to why they don't just make all Space Marine factions into supplement codexes to go with the Space Marine Codex. Makes little sense.

Don't say that to a Space Marine player who plays one of those factions. They get all butt hurt. I thought the same thing, but I was promptly proven wrong. Drinking blood, one unique elite choice, and slapping fast on all your vehicles requires a totally separate codex.

I dont get why there are so many variations of space marines eighter but thats a discussion to be had eksewhere. I dont want to open that can here lol.

As for DE getting a new dex. From a financial point of view for GW i imagine they wouldnt mind if their least selling (i think we are the least selling?) army got a good new codex which would get us up on par with Eldar and Tau. It ought to increase their sales i reckon. Just my thoughts on the matter with what ive learned so far about GW as a company

Me either. Once supplements were a thing, all space marine chapters should of been compressed into this format that other codexes are going through..

Thats what happened to Black Templars, they were compressed into Codex Space Marines, and now they're no where near as unique as they used to be. I don't see why people want Space Marines to be compressed, wouldn't you all rather see more variety? Wouldn't you rather other factions get multiple books like the Space Marines do? Codex Blood Axes, Codex Saim Hann, Codex Gold Teef, Codex Chaos Legions etc. I'd much rather more than less. Though I do understand that it would be possible to cover most Space Marines in one giant book, they covered multiple Chapters quite well within the 3rd Edition Codex like this, just a few force org changes and special rules at the back. My point was, having the Space Marines be compressed would make it less likely other factions would get additions and expansions, which I'm sure we no one wants, I'd sure we'd all love for a fully fledged Codex Corsairs to be a possible thing. Anyway, this is well off topic...

As for the Actual topic. Maybe we'll eventually get a new codex after they finish updating the codexes that need a faux latin name change for copyright protections. So Codex Adeptus Astartes, ummm... I dunno, just an idea.
