PostSubject: Double Grotesque Boats   Wed Mar 19 2014, 16:18

I have had a lot of success recently running Urien in a boat with 3 Grotesques (1 LG, 1 Aberation). Using Aethersails, I spearhead straight forward in order to make sure I'm killing things on turn 2. This unit has been great at destroying units as well as being a huge distraction for my opponent as my other units get into position.

This has me thinking about modifying my list to add a 2nd Grotesques unit (supported by a Haemoculous or Archon) in order to provide 2 threats to my opponent instead of just 1.

The downside (besides the point cost) would be it's another elite slot which removes a blasterborn venom.

Has anyone attempted to run a double Grotesque unit build? Has it been effective for you or did you feel like the slot was better suited for blasterborn?

I think if you're going to do this then you need to go big or go home. Urien, couple of Haems and as many Grotesques as you can fit in the boats. You're going to invest a lot of points in this tactics so it needs to have as much chance as possible of surviving to get into combat.

I do this all the time, though with two units of 4+Haemi. Works like a charm and is a blast to field. Fully endorse.

I was thinking of trying out sending 2-3 units of 4 grotesques with Heams and one Soultrap/huskblade archon in one of the units into my opponents frontline with aethersails, hope to get wrecked, and charge their line turn 2. Would it work?

I tried this with one unit of 3 incubi and 1 Soultrap/huskblade. Sure, my opponent (tau, with a riptide within 6" of where my unit landed) almost died of fear, but a 1 on my first Shadowfield roll ended that move.

I don't know, but I agree with the Count; Go big or go home.

I Do feel anyhow that it could be great against Tau, or any other shooty army. And Grotesques increase the majority T, witch is great for an Archon.

Has anyone had success with a squad of 5-6 on tthe ground without a transport? My current list needs a fire magnet and I was curious if a walking/running squad would be scary with an archon. It seems like the extra bodies would be more beneficial than the transport if you had a front line deployment.

Again, I'm mostly looking for a fire magnet, not necessarily having them have a stellar combat result.

Ive rolled double grot boats when I started. It was fun but entirely unnecessary man. Ones enough IMO. Looked super cool but took away from key elements I wanted more. Also consider its a lot harder to hide 2 raiders making backups more essential which then starts to dictate deployment options and such.

Foot grots otoh I havent tried and wouldnt want to. Consider when your ride gets smoked in your own DZ.. yea thats how they will function. Basically low on the priority list since they have no ranged presence to speak of.

I like the idea of double grotesque boats, send each boat up a separate flank with venoms spear heading up the middle. The grots work like a surgical blade to peel open the sides and the venoms take apart the what's left.

Double grots is cool no doubt but theres inherent issues with double units. Besides the points investment and killing similar units that splinter weaponry already does, not all opponents have enough static elements to warrant 2 slogging disruption units.
Against tau or guard they will perform well. Against plenty of other faster armies though 2 is too many. If I were to run 2 units again id probably scale em back to haemie + 3 grots each.. basically splitting my current units pts in two.

I think it's a decent idea.  I like overkill and the good thing about these guys is they can be anti tank or anti infantry.  Send one tank hunting and send the other infantry hunting.  Also, the tank hunting one; you could use not only them but their raider for dual purpose as well.  Flat out sideways right in front of enemy tanks, so they have issues moving and good LOS blocker.  I use this tactic all the time.  It also ensures you will be able assault vehicle next turn.  Move up to an inch away and done.

I have used foot grots - of course - and a squad of seven works if you have the right list to support them.

I ran 4 grotesques with archon in aether sails raider together with large beastpack and an allied farseer. If you get fortune you are in for a blast. T1 you fortune archon, load up and send the suicide boat on its way whilst running beastpack after it. Their T1 you will be shot down. place fortune archon to tank wounds. with t5 and 2++ reroll it will take a lot of fire power to damage it. If they charge. Good, if they don't you will charge t2 anyways.

T2 fortune beastpack and run after. T3 profit.

I enjoyed the list but it was very fortune dependant to be successful.

Get two Tantalus and then run 7 of them with a haemon each in AV 13? haha, it SCREAMS grots. (assuming you have enough children to sell for them, but hey that's what cloning pods are for.)

I'm about to get 10 grotesques and play haemonculus coven army an right now I use 2 dark artisan formations with wwp an everything with liquifier. An it's devastating. But iv never fielded grots an idk if I wanna do 2 raiders or have them wwp in. I was thinking of night shield aether sails shock prow raiders an just suicide them at armor since we don't really have many AT options in coven and have uriah in a lone venom behind them to provide buff... if not that. then either 2x5 trots with haemonculus and a wwp or 10 with 1 haemonc wwp for grotesquerie.

I am running Grotesquerie with boats: 3 with urien, 3 with agoniser/blastpistol archon. I havent tried aether sails, that sounds totally worth it!

Have you not considered the formation? I'm trying to find models to use for more grotesque so I can run two units of 4 in raiders with aethersails myself. Haven't decided yet if I want to have just Urien with them, Urien and 1 haemonculus, or 2 haemonculi. It would free up your slots that you're afraid of losing for blasterborn and it gives them a handy buff table similar to combat drugs.

If you're running 2 boats of grotesques the grotesquerie is how to do it. They get the formation buff, the coven pfp buff, and don't take elite slots.

I also support using the grotesquerie. The Latest Experiments buff is great, the Freakish Spectacle boon is nothing to sneeze at, and your Grots get to use the (for them) vastly preferable Covens PfP table.

I thought resurrections occurred at Easter, not Christmas. Just to point out: this topic was started back in March, long before the new codex and coven supplement, so I expect Unholy has moved to the Grotesquerie if still using grots.
