PostSubject: Dark eldar assassin   Wed Aug 28 2013, 23:52

Ok I mentioned it on the general page but I have decided that it didn't quite fit there as it was more about rules and I could go into more detail
I was thinking would it be possible to take a leaf out of the dark elves (I don't play them and don't only vaguely know how they work) some sort of assassins that hide normal infantry units I.e. kalibite warriors and wych squads maybe incubi but not things like scourges, jet bikes or mandrakes
These would hide in a chosen squad until you choose to revel them selves most likely in combat to attack a enemy character or monster where it would replace one of the models but until that point it would function exactly like a its parent unit.
Perhaps a limit on numbers total or just one per unit like dark elves
This would make opponents more wary of the troops fit giving a phycological fear, it would fit with the idea off dark eldar and since you would only want to reveal the assassin once it has reached it's target providing a incentive for combat.
Also what sort of equipment would they come with and what could they be upgraded with
How would they function as in rules, points and stats wise?

"Assassin among our ranks! Kill our troops to flush him out!"

I'ld like seeing the assassin have the same stats as Lelith, but with a huge point drop and venom blades(not one, but two!).

Maybe not Lilith but more succubus and maybe 1 9r two less wounds
Perhaps if there was a proper assassin character or a master assasin then more like Lilith

I do like the idea; perhaps make it some sort of 'drake shifting its shape which allows it to hide among others?

Dang! I was hoping Tyranids followed the Pokemon naming idea. A big Carnifex running around just yelling "Carnifex! Carni-Carnifex!" followed by a squad of termagants all saying "Termagant" to each other.

Mandrakes could become assassins, yeah. A squad of assassins would work well. Maybe this could be the new role for mandrakes? :p

Yes, you pay them, and they go to the ice cream parlour to get drunk, and forget about the job.

No I don't like the idea of a squad of assassins, that doesn't fit. When ever you think of assassins doing a job it is one, very highly, skilled, well equipped, and well payed person going after his target. I suppose you could have one or two different types; a mandrake assassin maybe with the ability to jump from squad to squad after being revealed, a standard dark Eldar assassin, cheaper but no less effective in power think shadow blade model form the new dark elves, or any other dark elf assassin for that matter, a "wytch" assassin with 'better' dodge saves and maybe a incubi assassin for when more staying power is needed.
Fluff wise I think of it as a guild of assassins (yeah I'm a Terry Prattchet fan if anyone else knows you he is) that carefully watch there areas of the city looking for those that show promise. Those that do are abducted, and brought to there lair where they are given many operations to improve them and are then made to do increasingly gruelling test. Those that survive are initiated into this group of assassins, and from then on they can be brought out to assassinate rival archons or participate in battles. As they were once normal dark elder they retain the skills and some of the equipment they had from before, I.e. the wytch might have a shartnet or similar.
You could have many assassin guilds in a city the size of Commorragh, each with there own style, name and colours. I suppose as they would be very rich (just think of the amount of high paid trade available!) there would be nothing to stop you having your army built around assassins guild hiring out normal kalibite warrior squads, wychs and scourges from various kabals and giving them there own colours and led by a master assassin or simply a payed out archon.
I imagine that the models should be cloaked and sinister, but moving like there just jumping out from hiding in there squad and with ties to there origins under there armour such as incubi armour being visible from under the cloaks or a shard net or anything else that relates back.
I do believe however that they SHOULDN'T be tied to there original fluff unit as assassins after all are masters of disguise and should have no trouble hiding within any unit from there own army after all who in the chaos of a battle especially one involving dark eldar suddenly appearing out of nowhere would notice a single cloaked dark eldar with some odd armour benieth, with my fellow squad dying of splinter weapon poisoning, I cirtenly wouldn't,
Any flaws in this plan?

The assassins idea is neat, and has been suggested earlier.
I will say again the same things that come to mind.
The problem with an assassin could very well be this:
You have an army list with x2 wych squads (5) in venoms, and x1 wych squad (7) in a raider.
Now, where could the assassin be...

Well, that can be countered with different transports (and maybe the min amount of wyches could be dropped to 4?).

I really like the idea of a mandrake assassin, could work fluff-wise. Also, that just gave me another idea: The mandrake could be in a vehicle, but not take a spot at it. It would be "floating" with its "shadow" or something cool.

I dont really know can assassin groups work, but all the stuff about guilds sounded neat, and also incubi-assassins!

Oh and yes I do know who Terry is Wink Love his work

Perhaps, every unit has the option of taking an assassin, but only one assassin may be taken per detachment?? So the assassin looks and acts exactly like a member of that squad (thus you don't give the game away by having a smaller unit in a transport) and doesn't have to be declared in your army list (obviously, you must secretly note down exactly which unit it's in before the game starts, to avoid any cheating)
Then, whenever you choose, you can declare that he is the assassin, at which point he adopts his assassin-statline and has same rules as an independent character (basically, can leave his unit; a master poisoner with a toxic knife being depressing useless in a squad of warriors with splinter racks.) So, his rules work from a fluffy point of view, and can work in-game as well - fun to surprise assault from a gun-squad, but he isn't all that OP, as he's just one man???
