PostSubject: On Being A Bad Influence   Wed May 08 2013, 10:39

Friend of mine wants to introduce me to her 10 year old son, as she thinks Im the sort of person who he ought to get to know.

(I do not know if that is a good or bad thing.)

I view children in the same way that I view Pomerians, Mandrakes, TV licence inspectors and zombies...ie with a great deal of suspicion...

(putting it mildly.)

Anyhow she knows I do warhammer and wishes for me to get her son into it.

I have warned her that she will not like me if I get her son into an expensive hobby, (I know you don't treat friends like this) but she says it is ok, she want stimulating and fascinating things in his life.

So, after the exams we are going to GW.

I will, of course, try to steer him away from marines....(I wont try to influence him in any other way except possibly in the direction of an army of Taste and Discernment...)

What do you suggest? That I hide in my hole and don't get involved with this project?

Shove him into the GW store and let the staff members educate him.

As a little boy you know he's going to go for marines first. So many vehicles and guns. But it's all good, we all have to go through Marines first before we realize the cooler armies in 40k.

Maybe a starter set is in order? Some chaos & dark angels?

I think helping kids get started is great, my gaming group is part of a larger tabletop games society that actively promotes engaging new and younger players into the various games, some of which are a bit of a lost art now in the digital age.

My son got started through our group (and so did I at the same time), he hated the noisy, poorly-behaved crowds in the GW stores and much preferred interacting with adults. I think that greatly helped his gaming, and his social development.

You could also get some second-hand gear and teach him the value of reclaiming previously-used models?

ORKS! Nothing appeals to the 10 year-old mindset more than just going for it while throwing tactics out of the window Twisted Evil You can pick the AoBR orks for CHEAP too on B-town/ebay/others

I'm basically a 10 year-old trapped in a 37 year-old's body. (I've played Orks for decades)

My 10 year old son is just getting his head round it all, he is totally taken with it. The stories and idea he comes up are amazing. Will certainly get the kids imagination going.

How could I forget the Greenskins? They are the funnest army ever.

And they don't take themselves seriously unlike `some` folk I can name...

Well, I think I have made a convert to our Faith...

...But, I fear he will fall prey to the Beakies...(Tau and DE a close second.)

Its my own, fault, I brough my copy of `Ultramarines`

(I will go and hand myself over to the Haemies right away.)

His mother is suitably traumatized.

He has decided, its Ultrasmurfs and People of Taste and Discretion. (all good, of course)

(I can kiss my landspeeder goodbye...)

None of this sinister `Greater good` stuff...

A pretty interesting combination.

We are all different, so we all choose differently on this.
Me, I am almost 80% likely never going to have a 40k army that is not Dark Eldar or Eldar.

Anyways. On the topic, this can be a great hobby for a child. I would always rather think "gamer" as someone who goes out on gaming nights to play with miniatures that he has painted himself rather than a gamer that locks inside his own room to shoot zombies at some crude fps-game.

And its certainly a pleasing paring.

Howdy,

while I find this an interesting topic, it does not belong in painting and modeling discussion.

It is moved to general discussion where it is more appropriate,

Thanks

I will also support greenskins, simple, easy to learn, and tons of fun for the less sophisticated.

Orks were my starting army...though my second was Marines.

I think you did a great thing, and even if he's playing Marines it's not bad - the Marine fluff is pretty great, and really they have a cool model line as well. I don't even get the concern, the Marine armies are visually interesting and have a lot of great character and are really a pretty solid learner's army to boot as they are a bit more affordable than some other armies and also will be easier to learn ho to paint (can you imagine learning to paint with the current DE line as your starting point - yikes!)

I have no forgiveness for you making him an Ultramarine player though - that is unforgivable.

Ultramarines *shakes head sadly*

Orks are way cool though.

I supervised my son, and subsequently about a dozen of his friends, get into Warhammer, between the ages of 9 and 12; 4 years later some are still mad on it, others barely lasted a month.

Marines are a great starter army, because T4 and 3+ mean that the nasty person on the other side of the table doesn't kill all your toys so quickly. This is big for a 10 year old.
A small model count is easier to maintain an attention span for, and is realistically possible to name every model, bond with them, and take pride in them. This is harder with 120 Termagants...

They are very simple to build: large sockets for heads, torsos and arms, plus shoulder pads to hide your mistakes. Simple blocky shapes are easy to paint, and they look good (and are fluffy) in just a basic base colour.

They don't roll many dice, compared to an Ork mob charging, and they succeed more with them.

I am very proud of my little gang's Warhammer achievements, and I hope you have success with your padawan; as his Master you have a tough job balancing maintaining his enthusiasm, but also teaching him the importance of tactics: letting him win does him no favours, but neither does crushing him!

watch LoTR's with him over the course of the a few weekends, gasp and gesture excitedly when the orcs are on screen bashing stuff. exclaiming on their positive virtues. then if you have one just happen to leave an orc codex lying around for him to look at.

You should start a project log detailing it. I, for one, would be interested in seeing it's progression given I'm in the middle of designing one myself.
