This competition has ended, for results Click Here

The Fluff
Spoiler:

The Rules

Welcome to Secrets of the Hidden Library, a hopefully recurring fiction competition here in The Dark City.
The purpose of this competition is to create some works of fiction, have some fun reading them, earn some prizes, and hopefully enjoy it all enough to do it again in the future.

Anyone may participate (besides the judges, and they know who they are)

The Story

  • You will write a story, 350 words or less (but not more, seriously now).

Post the story in the Stories & Art; The Black Library forum here on TDC.

Please also post in this thread with a link to your story - indicating you wish it to be part of the competition.

I would also encourage you to include a notation in the topic title about it being an entry - but I don't consider that a requirement.

The only limitation to what the story is about is that it should feature Dark Eldar - and also utilize the theme word in some manner.

You may use the theme word in any manner you wish, feel free to be creative!

The story should have a title - the title will not count as part of the word count.

The Theme Word
STORM.

Deadline

You may post your story at any time.
No stories posted *after* June 8th, 12am, EST will be eligible for judging or prizes.
You may edit your story at any time - but any edits after June 8th may leave you disqualified for prize support.

Judging

Myself and the other two judges will begin judging the stories on June 8th.
There will also be a Reader's Choice award poll put up - where anyone can vote for any story as the 'best'

Scoring will be based on a 1-10 scale in the following categories;

Use of theme word.
1 point = it was just randomly in a sentence and had no meaning within the work.
10 points = highly creative use of word, or meaning behind the word, to advance the story and connect the story to the theme word.

Quality of narrative.
1 point = I fell asleep trying to read it.
10 points = Really interesting, made me enjoy reading it throughout.

Grammar, punctuation, and appearance.
1 point = solid block of text, written in l33t sp33k, no punctuation at all.
10 points = Proper use of punctuation, no misspellings could be noticed, all words used correctly, neat paragraphs spaced for readability.

Prizes

There will be a prize for 1st, 2nd, and Reader's Choice awards.
We will come up with a prize pool consisting of books, models, or other DE related stuff...frankly I'll admit we're going to come up with volunteers from the Mod staff to get you prizes based on which of the volunteer mods are closest to your mailing address Wink

If you're in the Continental US I will probably be the mod who will send you prizes and I will offer you a list to choose from - letting 1st, Reader's Choice, and 2nd have choosing preference in that order - other volunteer gift givers will be able to choose their own methods, but considering some of the conversation about gift ideas I do pretty much promise you'll get something cool.  Smile

Have Fun

Anyone not having fun will be eligible for banning at any time Wink

I look forward to seeing what you can all come up with.

This sounds like a great idea and indeed a fun competition. Count me in! 350 words isn't much, but in the right hands, it's more than enough. Now, to find the owner of those hands and attach them to myself...

Ooh, first one already! I have to start writing if I want to post mine before the deadline ends Very Happy

The shortness the story needs to have limits the potential, but that was an interesting short read, Mongoose study

Woo! I heartily approve of this! It was certainly interesting writing something with such a small word count. You must think carefully to distill great meaning through such brevity. A Dark Eldar writing competition? What could be more depraved!?

Here is my entry!

http://www.thedarkcity.net/t6439-blight-storm#69915

I hope this humble offering pleases the readers.

Also, are we allowed more than one entry? I'm not asking so I can go nuts I promise you, but I do have one more idea pecking at the inside of my skull like a hungry razorwing.

Also also, this here made my day.

I honestly never even considered this.

scratch

I have zero issues with you writing multiple stories, but I may make you decide which of them you wish to submit for judging (feel free to ask your audience to weigh in Wink ) At the very least I'm going to enforce a 'one prize per participant' rule, so you're ineligible to win multiple prizes even if I do decide to allow multiple stories to be submitted.

I'm open to hearing thoughts from other people about how they think it could/should be handled.

Also, I'm excited to see we already have two stories entered cheers

Indeed, it is great to see so much interest in the fiction competition, and it's still early days!

I have very much enjoyed both the entries so far. Good work. Smile

Agreed with all of the above. 350 words is tough. Here's my shot:
http://www.thedarkcity.net/t6513-a-light-against-the-storm#70586

I am also sorely tempted to write another potential entry, but I would definitely support the idea of nominating one entry per contestant for the sake of balance.

took a stab Wink at this, had this thought rolling around the attic for a while....

http://www.thedarkcity.net/t6523-inner-storm#70705

maybe not strictly Dark Eldar but certainly themed appropriately. Hope you enjoy!

Here is my entry, finished in the eye of the storm of my exam time.

http://www.thedarkcity.net/t6525-embers-in-the-wind#70737

For a short story set in a single scene, the word limit actually works surprisingly well! Helps to keep it simple and also trims the fat, as every word should be there for a reason.

I hate "a"'s and "the"'s. Count as 1 word just as much as Kheradruakh is 1 word.

I hadn't really noticed until you mentioned it, but nearly 10% of my word count is "the" and "a". Mad

I feel I have failed the dark gods of literature...

6 entries are now in.

3 weeks now remain.

Thank you all for the submissions, I'm intentionally not even reading them yet because I want to do it as a single splurge, and also I'd like to read and grade in one fell swoop without reading too many of the comments from other people to affect my initial thoughts, but I'm already excited and curious as to what treasures await me during the judging process.
