Hi Tangentical,
Very nice work. I love the colours. Great tie in with the Kabal name.

Scourge helms and Corsair capes really make these guys stand out. Great colours, great highlights and nice bases! Really good job all around!

The conversion gives the whole new feel.

to me they look more sinister, like predatory birds with attitude. Very well done

Thanks all!

Next up is a Venom and I'm also converting up a Raging Heroes model to be a female Archon...

http://www.ragingheroes.com/collections/complete-collection/products/asharah-sf-28mm

I'm going to swap in the Solarite head (as part of the Kabal theme).

Hope it turns out ok!

Cheers

Chris

Whoa, so 1 6 hour session later and I have finished my Archon and her personal bodyguard 'One Eye'.

I think I've got an idea as to their backstory in my head but need to paint up the other 3 incubi for them to be usable as a unit.

Here's my (Female!) Archon front...

And back...

One Eye front...

And back...

And in a group with Sebastian the Talos Pain Engine...

Hope you guys like these new elite additions to the Kabal!

Chris

Looks great! Very Happy
Those blue muscles on the talos makes it feel even more scarier!
Also, what head did you use on the "one eye"?

Just looked at the pictures and the lighting is a bit naff, the orange glow of the bulb makes them all look a lot 'hotter' than they are in the flesh (more like the Kabalites which were taken in daylight).

The head of One Eye is one of the heads from the Black Ark Corsairs Kit.

They don't fit perfectly and need greenstuff and pinning but look dynamic and make them unique which I always like my minis to be!

Cheers

Chris

This army looks incredible! So regal! What are you using to get the blue effect for the army? I'd love to know your process for getting those blues on the Wracks and other models. Smile Keep up the great work!

Thanks!

The blue goes like this

1) Undercoat Black
2) Basecoat Macragge Blue
3) Wash Draken Nightshade
4) Highhlight Macragge Blue
5) Highlight Altdorf Blue
6) Highlight Altdorf Blue mixed with White Scar (maybe in two steps getting lighter)
7) Glaze with Guilliman Blue

On models where a wash wont work well (big open spaces like vehicles) I base with Kantor Blue then highlight Macragge Blue instead of steps 2,3 & 4.

Cheers

Chris

Ah thanks man! That's a similar but slightly lighter blue to what I'm basing my army around (I'm starting with Necron Abyss) the old Kantor Blue.

Have you used any washes in your beautiful gold effect you've got going on?

Yep, I wash with Reikland Fleshtone then highlight up with Auric Gold then Griffon Gold.

Hi chaps!

It seems that Venom’s are actually really easy to paint.

The actual vehicle to paint (as per the below) took me about the same as the chap manning the gun and the cockpit guy!

Not entirely happy with the banner so I may change it, but i’m probably going to need to be doing a few more of these babies (some people take 9, but I can’t see me getting beyond 4 or 5).

Here we go...

Not sure if for the next one i’ll move the gold to the nosecone element or paint differently or keep a squadron feel to them

Next up is my first (and possibly only?) Raider which might transport the wracks but may transport the Grotesques as an exploding transport won’t hurt them tooooo much.

Cheers

Chris

PostSubject: Re: Kabal of the Burnished Sapphire - allied Wraithknight painted!   Sun Mar 17 2013, 11:17

This weekend thus far I’ve been mostly working on my first (and possibly only) Raider for the Kabal.

I posted it a while back when it was under construction...

And so it stayed as I’ve got a bit of a love hate relationship with the Raider model. I actually like it at first glance but the idea of a sail on a mode of futuristic transport seems odd in the extreme and not odd in a cool way (a bit like how/why the Talos floats).

Well I haven't actually converted it up too much as I just couldn't think of what to do that would still maintain its gaming integrity.

I’ve finished it, or at least got as far as I can bring myself to tinker with it at the moment.

As I was fairly indifferent to the model I used it to in part try out a new idea… intentionally pooling a wash to represent the nightshields. I intentionally heavy washed the bottom half of the hull in Drakenshade wash letting it pool at the bottom. Not sure about the results but what the hey!

I also added a load of skulls as what says 40K power like a ton of skulls.

Hope they worked out ok, I’m actually a bit blind to it now ad am moving onto my Urien model I undercoated earlier this week. The Finecast on it was soooo bad I had to discard two of the little back arms and replace with a bit from my bits box. So much flash it has actually left me a bit cross that it got sold in that state.

Oh well, undercoated and cleaned up now so onwards and upwards!

Cheers

Chris

This is so awesome...

Tell you what, why don't you all start painting worse? Can't control my jealousy... Shocked

'One Eye' is one of the best conversions I've seen in a long time - so simple yet oozes tons of character.

Cheers guys, thanks for your praise!

The end of another feverish weekend of painting brought me another completed HQ, this time in the shape of Urien Rakarth (he was in the undercoated stuff picture I posted a few days ago).

Zoe’s PhD viva is on Thursday so my time of painting without disturbance is likely to end pretty soon (though corrections could still leave me a few weekends where I get to paint without having to go...socialise!!!

As I’ve said before I had a horrible bit of finecast and I had to discard a couple of the vestigial limbs as past saving and ended up replacing with an injector from a Necron Spider (I originally got as a potential Grotesque conversion part).

Anyway after all the cleanup woes he actually was a decent model to paint and with care took washes very well.

Anyway, here he is in all his gory glory...

I loved the story in the Codex of him turning the tide of a Tyranid invasion of Tau space in exchange for several thousand tau to experiment on which he promptly turned into Grotesques which he used to crush the Tau!

So here he is with his Grotesque bodyguards...

These guys will hopefully be a decent shock assault unit... with his clone field and regaining wounds Urien is very very hard to kill in a challenge!

Hope you guys like him as together with the female Archon they’ll probably be my two warlords of choice.

Cheers

Chris

Fantastic man! Truly brilliant. Your gold has inspired my army's colour scheme. It's basically a darker version of this that's painted far, far worse haha! I love the serpent on the raider gun shield. Where is that from?

Cheers guys, thanks for all the kind words!

I’m ramping up my painting for my first game with the Kabal next week so I want to get some last bits done for the 1000point bash against some Guardians of the Covenant.

Unfortunately my original plan including a Ravager and a Raider is out the window as I only want to be carrying 2 KR cases and the way the Raider/Ravager foam is cut it takes up a whole box for four and it can’t be split in two.

So I’ll probably paint up the Magnetised second Talos/Chronos in the picture below.

Yes, I’ve discovered magnets and the Ravager is fully magnetised (can even be Disintegrator cannons if needed) or even a Raider. The Talos/Chronos can have any of the legal loadouts though I’ve used the tail to hold the Spirit Vortex as it just didn’t feel right stuck on his bum. P.S. pic includes my second of three Venoms I got last month.

To try and partly counter my army only having 1 dark lance I’m painting up some Blasterborn too...

The real excitement for me this week is that I got some terrain off of ebay!

By this guy called Chris Gooderham ( and it is AMAZING... so amazing that i’ve commissioned a whole boards worth from him with an overgrown theme...
http://chrisjg.wix.com/cjsworld
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/designchris/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

Exciting times ahead for the Kabal!!!!

Chris

As I said in the blurb (I know, I know, pictures are prettier!) the terrain was by a guy called Chris Gooderham (links in the text to his store and ebay) so I've no idea where the poster came from but I'm loving details such as this.

Cheers

Awesome work! One would think that bright colors for such a dark army would not go so well but you sure make it look dam good! Only thing I didnt like was the places you chose to paint gold(ish) on the venoms, Reminded me of those old school foam (Nerf) dual colored footballs.

Damn. Those Highborn are so VERY swish.
I'm also loving the female archon and One Eye Smile

Cheers!

First game for the Kabal on Thurs so I've been painting like a whirling dervish (8hours yesterday whilst listening to 'Betrayer'!).

First finished is my Chronos (yet to be named). I've modified him like I did with Sebastan the Talos by adding extra tentacle arms to make him look less 'floaty' and I also kept the Talos tail and magnetised it to take the Spirit Vortex (as I think it looks dumb just sat on his bum)......

And here he/she is with his/her brother Sebastian...

And look, magnetised... Yet to paint the other options as I only need a Chronos for Thurs but you get the idea!

I hope you like my new Chronos, now I need to name it (or jealousy of Seb might ensue).

Cheers guys

Chris

Rightho, the mega weekend of painting has continued apace despite lunch visits to see family and babies and the likes.

Polished off my second venom and an attempted conversion for the Baron which will probably end up a Beastmasters or Helliarch as I'm not really happy with how it came out...

First off the micro beast pack for Thursday's small game...

And my second Venom, gunner is currently untainted and will remain untainted for at least the next week as the vehicle is ok to use I think without him...

I tried my hand at giving this one a small amount of battle damage as if some snipers had tried to take out the pilot...

And here it is with its buddy...

Hope you like them, just need to police off a squad of Trueborn in the next three days to be set for the Kabal's first battle against some Monkey Space Marine minions of the False Emperor.

Cheers

Chris
