I'm not sure just yet if this thread would be best placed here on in painting and modelling but what I want to ask is ideas for DE terrain. The current rumour for 6th regarding terrain is that each army will have a fortification slot and be able to buy a piece of terrain for their army. A lot of these are based on existing GW terrain bases but I want something more, something themed.

I pass it over to you guys. What do you think would be good as DE themed terrain, something that would have reason to be there?

How bout a tower that comes out of a portal with some dark lance warriors on it. Would make a decent anti air platform.

Otherwise, ruins, ruins and ruins pretty much suit us. (with loads of dead ppl & blood on it)

Of course it all depends on what kind of options there will be in the rulebook, what rules they will have and whether they all are available for every race or there are restrictions.

Not knowing any of that, one can only speculate and dream.
From the top of my head, I can't really imagine any building/terrain/fortification for the Dark Kin. As they always attack in a quick raid and always attack never defend, Dark Eldar themed terrain seems odd.

What I could imagine I would use, however, are regular terrain pieces, be they imperial or xenos/chaos, but a little... modified. They would never stay long enough at one place to really build stuff, but how about them throwing spears and trophies from the Raiders and Venoms? Spikes with impaled bodies on them around a ruin, corpses of the defending army scattered throughout the terrain piece? Runes and symbols written in blood on the walls of buildings?
Alternatively, swapping the regular weapons of fortifications and turrets with Dark Eldar equivalents? If there's a kind of dangerous terrain you can choose to place, maybe some kind of minefield-esque area with tiny spontaneous fluctuating webway portals, ripping beings on it apart?

The point being that I don't think Dark Eldar should have their own terrain, but - similar to Chaos, Daemons and Tyranids - modify existing (imperial/eldar/orky) buildings.

This is where I'm at on this. I like SP's idea of a portal of some kind. Without knowing the mechanics of how this terrain would work I am hesitant to model anything.

Another wacky idea: how about grown terrain? Crazy haemonculus constructs, beamed in through the portals mentioned above, or thrown/shot to the ground in capsule form down from aircraft, then growing to its full size in seconds?

- Turrets could be crazy Taloi growing out of the ground; immobile, shooty and resilient enough to justify light building status.
- Alternatively Cronoi for possible more arcane turrets or communication relays?

I have this really, really odd idea of a floating party barge for Duke. I'll get back to you on this one.

Edit. What about an ancient gate, flanked by two altars from the dark elf Cauldron of blood, surrounded by trees and vines.

Or, inspired by the dark olympiad apocalypse formation, a section of an arena full of spectators, teleported to watch the 'game'.

And more ideas, I'm liking the grown terrain more and more. If there were some kind of minefields or dangerous terrain everyone can buy, how about grown tentacle fields? Haha, or how about the Archon just drops a few dozen slaves from a high flying barge, so their broken and splattered corpses hinder movement? Very Happy

Well with thanks to Cavash and City I have finalised some ideas for my piece.

My current idea is a pleasure barge with spectators viewing the battle.

Current idea is to base it on a Tantalus with possibly some Necron Ghost Ark pieces and some more decks. When I have an idea of what it'll be based on when 6th hits I'll do a little sketch.

I would like to expand on my webway portal idea for terrain. Have the spires of Commoragh poking into real space through tears in the fabric of space.
They would be mounted on spare flying bases and inch or so off the table and have all manner of towers walls and weapons sticking out to obstruct the field.

The glass plague that is important for arcane wargear and in Path of the Renegade would be interesting to model. A copse of vitrified trees, a field of black obsidian flowers, a desert oasis otherwise untouched save that every living thing has been turned to glass.

It might be a difficult to explain, but it would definitely stand out.

Something liek the Aegis Defence Line (gun emplacement and walls) should be relatively easy. Force field generators dropped in to give some cover to advancing troops and a hovering automated (or slave-operated) weapon platform to shoot down enemy aircraft. If I'm crazy enough I migth consider basing the gun platform on the BFG Corsair starbase. Might be a bit expensive for a terrain piece tho.

I like CaptainBalroga's ideas.

A docking spur with a berth for a Raider? That would be cool, especially if you could interlock several together.

There is the half-moon webway portal that was shown last year, but unfortunately it doesn't offer much in terms of practical terrain. http://www.thedarkcity.net/t1076-inspirational-de-terrain

A smaller version of it in combination with other items would be great, though. I could see some kind of gatehouse or archway with defensive weapons positions attached, similar to Nomic's suggestion, and perhaps a sort of boulevard lined on each side by monuments which consist of upturned blades curving in to form an open arch along its length. I have seen these type of features in some WD articles, but arranged like that.

In the codi they mention a district buried in calciferous matter from all around the galaxy. There are also mock battles made up of almost every living sentient specie and fields of skeletons varying in size.

With this in mind you can make terrain such as, ''fortifications'' made up from mounds of bone, ''woods'' made up from different species battling eachother (kind of the glass plague), difficult terrain such as bone-fields and much much more.
Just give that a dark blue/gray base and then just highlight the bones or what you now have on there.
If you want to do those ''woods'' with glass plague maybe some shadow gray drybrushing could be the thing?

Gobsmakked you beat me to it, my reasoning would be thus:
Dark Eldar are raiders. Dark Eldar ride on raiders. Dark Eldar use webway portals. Webway portals are too small for raiders. So, the raiders have to arrive on their raiders from somewhere. To my mind that means one of two things. Bigger webway portals (yup, gobsmakked pointed out the half moon portal above) or the raiders are delivered from somewhere. Cue some kind of dropship that carries the raiders to the surface of a planet, I'm thinking something along the line of the ships from chronicles of riddick with the raiders attached to the outside and they detach once it's near the ground. Of course they'd be smaller and spikier than those ships, but you get the idea.

Everything the DE bring to battle someway comes out of the webway. Imagine a massive portal opened above a hive city with hundreds if not thousands of craft such as Raiders, Venoms, Tantali, even bigger vessels emerging like a swarm of locusts.

They can also come from their ships. Much like the Craftworlders, if there's no big enough portals on the planet to transport the army, they just fly their fleet into low orbit and drop craft striaght into the atmosphere (hence Duke, a corsair prince, being able to make all vehicles deep strike for free).

I was thinking about this recently, both from the point of view that you're (supposedly) going to be able to buy terrain in 6th edition but also when trying to think of suitably "Dark Eldar-ey" terrain. I'm not entirely convinced by the idea of DE having anti-aircraft batters and whatnot (although there's some fine ideas above I've not thought of), so what else could they deploy? I was thinking that, if you've got a civilian area that's been hit by the Dark Eldar and the enemy's army arrives while they're part way through doing whatever it is Dark Eldar do to large numbers of civilians, then that could have some interesting consequences.

Bringing these ideas together, I thought it would be cool to have a wood/copse that's made up of tortured/ crucified/ impaled victims that would have the added benefit of generating pain tokens to units nearby, or improving nearby morale or something similar. I'm not sure how such items might work from a gameplay point of view (I'm only just getting back into 40k), but I thought it could be an interesting route to take some terrain making at the very least.

Yes. And yes again. Love this idea, and I think we can pull a few cool things from the fluff and novel.

But just remember you may have to lug it around to games, so think twice before that fortress of redemption kit bash.

I've started planning DE towers and fortifications, something more like the DE buildings in DoW.
but the fluff of my kabal has them operating some worlds in realspace like slave farms, and would make sense for them to be attacked I guess.

(and I've actually managed ok before playing DE as defenders oddly enough)

You could legitimately model Commorragh terrain if you're representing a force fighting off the Salamanders during Vect's coup, or another raiding force that has somehow found its way in, or fighting off a rival faction in the Dark City.

The description of Shaa-Dom in Path of the Outcast could provide some ideas.

i like the buildings in DoW:SS as a real space raiding point. in the planetstrike book they also have a customised bastion that resembles a craftworld eldar design made from a juice bottle. add a few spikes and poles to the towers and it could easily become a terrain piece for the true kin. also, the short story Wolf at the Door (or it might be Wolf at the Gates) in Tales of Heresy describes some good inspiration - flying leviathan structures used by the dark eldar and prisoner shackling grounds to name just a couple.
