PostSubject: Inheritor   Sat Jun 09 2012, 12:48

The screen on my laptop broke, and as such Infotec's stories will be postponed until it's fixed (shouldn't be long). I'm currently using the home computer, but Infotec was on the laptop. As such, I'm here to write a semi-mystery. Should probably warn you, it's going to be incredibly violent and graphic.

Inheritor

He strode like a god amonst mortals, looking down his nose at the verdant life surrounding him. Where he walked, he was trailed by four Incubi bodyguards, klaives held up in a defensive position and sunlight seemingly absorbed by their jet-black armour.

How he hated this place.

Archon Teras Sithrasion, fifty-eighth trueborn lord of the Kabal of the Splintered Mind, was always an imposing figure to gaze upon. Nearly eight feet tall, he towered over those he commanded. Long black hair hung down his shoulders, framing a pale alabaster-skinned face. Those that gazed into his black eyes would find them windows to one of the blackest of souls.

Truly, black was to be found all over the sub-realm of the Splintered Mind. Teras was constantly intrigued by the night and those that made their activities in it. An entire sector of his sub-realm was devoted to the keeping of many nocturnal creatures kept together in perpetual darkness. Only the strongest survived in a horrible replica of the policy of the entire Kabal - survival of the fittest.

Teras had come to this planet clad in a black and midnight purple suit of deathplate armour - a modified suit of ghostplate that bore dozens of poisoned blades so deadly that the slightest scratch was lethal. A splinter pistol was built into each wrist, and the suit had many other deadly traps to slay an attacker. In his hands he clutched twin venom blades. Unlike his Incubi, Teras left his head bare, for a helmet was not necessary for an eldar as dangerous as the archon was.

Subconsciously, Teras touched his left shoulder to make sure the crystal was still there. His armoured fingers traced over its jagged edges and he smiled.

He was ready.

And so, it seemed, was the one he was to meet. With a wave of his hand, the archon dismissed his Incubi and strode closer to his co-conspirator.

"Farseer," he said, his tone showing his contempt for the other eldar.

"Archon," came the reply. Teras looked over the Farseer Tylara. Clad as always in shimmering white rune armour, eleven runes floated in the air around her. A black ghosthelm masked her face.

"I cannot see you on the skein," she began. "Why is that, archon?"

"Your own incompetence?" Teras sneered. "You called me here about the nine crystals, that is certain. Spit it out so I can get off of this accursed place."

"I have found the first one," Tylara replied.

"And?"

"It's... in possession of a Space Marine chapter."

Teras looked at her oddly. "How did a Space Marine chapter come to be in possession of one of the Nine? Doesn't their Codex Astartes" - he sneered at the last two words - "prevent them from being in possession of such items?"

Tylara shook her head. "They aren't Codex-adherent. Rumour has it they also possess at least one key to the Black Library. If you want to find out more, there will be little in Commorragh's databases."

"What are they called?"

"If you insist on this path, they are known as the Dark Crusaders. I cannot see you on the skein, so I do not know what path you will take."

Teras grinned evilly. "Good."

He turned and began walking away, then pivoted to swing a venom blade in an arc to decapitate Tylara. The headless corpse dropped to the ground and blood began to pool at the severed neck. Her runes thudded lifeless to the ground. The archon reached down and plucked the runes.

"Did you ever wonder why you couldn't sense me on the skein?" he murmured to the corpse. "Did you even consider that I was already far ahead of you in this race?" he reached to his shoulder and pulled the crystal off. "This is the first crystal of the Nine. Found on a Necron Tomb World. It grants its bearer complete psychic immunity. Already, I am far more powerful than you can comprehend, and will be a veritable god once I have the second crystal. I wonder what it will do, hmm? Maybe necromancy?"

Teras laughed and stood up, gesturing for his Incubi.

"Come. it is time we left. I have what I need."

Glad to see you back writing, even when faced with the issue of a minor laptop malfunction.

I like this and your Archon is an intriguing fellow.
I'm puzzled at what shall happen next, and what these crystals are, so I shall look forward to future updates.

And now for part two.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Teras sank down into the throne in his courtroom. Dracons, concubines, pets and alien mercenaries mingled freely in the room under the baleful gaze of the Archon's bodyguards. While this happened, Teras thought over the Farseer Tylara and her demise.

She had contacted him about sixty cycles ago, speaking of how she needed an Eldar blade that was free to act from the strictures of her Craftworld, and that Teras would be that blade. At first unwilling to join in the Farseer's schemes, the promise of power eventually coaxed him to assist her.

She had told him about nine crystals that each contained mighty power. What gave them this power, or who created them, even Tylara did not know, but that was of no concern to her ally. Teras openly assisted her in searching for the crystals, secretly plotting to betray her when the time was right.

The time had come when, six cycles ago, Teras had located on a Necron Tomb World the first crystal.

A lightning-fast raid to the Tomb World had caught the Necrons before most of them had awakened. Meeting little opposition, Teras' forces had found the crystal in the Overlord's chamber. As he removed it the power in the Tomb World had died, and all the sleeping Necrons died with it.

That was never any concern to Teras either. Having returned to Commorragh, he had taken the crystal to a fortune-teller of Low Commorragh, who had informed him of the powers it gave.

The next time he had met Tylara, he got the information he wanted and then killed her. With the death of the Farseer he had lost all chances to find out what the crystals actually were, at least in the forseeable future, but Teras now had the location of the second crystal.

Breaking out of his reverie, the Archon turned to one of his bodyguards. "Find me all the information we have on the Dark Crusaders," he ordered. The Incubus' tormentor helm flared and the silent warrior strode off to do his master's bidding. In truth, Teras expected there to be little or nothing in his files about them, but it didn't hurt to make sure. One of the thirteen foundations of vengeance read, 'What you don't know about your foe can be used by him as a weapon against you'.

Half an hour later the Incubus returned with a small view-screen. Teras flicked through it to find the little information actually on the Dark Crusaders.

"Psykers. Nearly a third of them are psykers," he said, smiling. He was immune to that. His smile faded when he read of the Darkened syndrome.

A Dark Crusader will sometimes mutate for unknown reasons into a more powerful form called a Darkened by the Chapter. The mutation will have side effects such as increased strength, speed or toughness. It is thought that Darkened are unable to talk.

Teras looked back at the paragraph.

"i think we might have gotten into more than we can handle here," he muttered. The Incubus remained silent.

He scanned the view-screen for any other information on the Dark Crusaders, but all he could find was that the Inquisition hated them and that their planet moved around the galaxy in a 360-year cycle. Nothing about their combat prowess, fighting style, chapter organisation or anything useful.

Teras shook his head. "If Tylara said they had a key to the Black Library then they are more dangerous than hinted here," he growled.

He raised his voice and shouted to the crowd. "We will continue with the raid! These Space Marines will be the key to new knowledge!"

He turned back to his Incubi. "We shall do Lord Vect a favour," he smirked, rising from the throne as a cheer rose from the court. "We shall gather more information about these fools."

Although openly brash and unafraid, inside Teras was starting to worry.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Just so you know, the Dark Crusaders are a Space Marine chapter I wrote a codex for (still a work in progress, but I can post it if you want). They seemed to fit in well with the mood of this story, so I plonked them in.

The Darkened are a lot more powerful than is explained here. They are essentially half-Daemons.

More of the story will be coming soon. Tell me if you want me to post the Codex and I'll do it in the appropriate section of the forum (Distractions, I think?).

Ooh, I am looking forward to Teras meeting the Dark Crusaders in the crucible of war.

Yeah, I'd like to look over your codex. It would be interesting to see your view on these 'Darkened'.

Cheers.

The world screamed. The skies split open, the seas boiled and magma gushed from the ground like blood oozing from a fatal wound.
Teras couldn't help but wonder what hell he had found his way into. His worries dissipated, though, as his Venom plummeted towards Nirvana's surface, the wind screaming past his face. The rest of his Kabal followed their Archon out of the webway portal and onto the Chapter Planet of the Dark Crusaders.
His earlier worries were now all gone as the Razorwings began blasting apart civilian and abode with monoscythe missiles. The rest of the Kabal's vehicles drew ever closer to the planet's surface.
Teras' Venom slowed slighty so that if anything devastated the first wave he would not be caught in it. As Raiders began landing on the ground and began pillaging unopposed, he beckoned for the driver to strike, then tilted his head back and let the terrified screams of the populace wash over his ears.
They had no hope.
It was then that the world exploded.
The blast landed at least a hundred metres away, annihilating anything it touched. The Archon's Venom, caught on the outskirts of the blast, was sent flying until it crashed nose-first into the ground and exploded.
The driver was killed in the crash, but Teras had leapt out just before the explosion, though he was still tossed away like a mite in a dust storm. He landed and skidded along the ground, sharp jabs of pain racing up his arm where armour and skin were ripped off by the impact.
When the world stopped spinning, he rose and brushed down the black armour.
"What the hell was that?" he grunted to himself as he drew his venom blades and strode off back to the rest of his fleet, beckoning for a Raider to come pick him up. There was no answer.
"They are too preoccupied to worry about you," a calm but arrogant voice sounded behind him. Teras whirled around and struck at a shimmering Marine behind him, only to have the blade go through the Marine's neck with no resistance as the Dark Crusader shimmered and turned insubstantial.
"Disappointing," the Marine shook his head. "I expected better from you."
"Who are you?" Teras snapped.
The Marine bowed mockingly. "Astus Callidex, Chief Librarian of the Dark Crusaders. I know who you are, Teras Sithrasion of the Splintered Mind."
"Utter my name without the correct deference again and you will die screaming," Teras snapped, uneasy but refusing to back down. Astus Callidex laughed.
"What makes you think that you can kill me?" he mocked. "I am Time itself, made flesh. You are just a semi-immortal xenos creature with a serious ego problem."
"Enough!" Teras snapped, and struck continually. A halbard phased into existence in Callidex's hands and the Chief Librarian blocked all of his attacks with ease, something that not even the fastest Space Marine should have been able to do.
Then Callidex counterattacked, swinging back with unrelenting force. The psychic blade was everywhere Teras' weapons were not, as if Time was twisting around it to move it in and out of reality.
The halberd descended, slicing through the Archon's armour and cutting deep into his torso. Blood spurted raggedly from the wound and Callidex twisted the blade around, tearing through Teras' organs. The Chief Librarian's eyes began to glow black, and the blade of the halberd glowed that colour as well. Teras could feel his life force slipping into the weapon, but the crystal on his shoulder stopped the psychic power and restored his energy.
Callidex kicked Teras in the shin, sending him stumbling backwards, away from the lethal halberd. The Archon collapsed on the ground, blood pouring from his mouth in ragged wet ropes.
"What... are... you?" Teras wheezed through blurring red vision and sharp jabs of pain, agonising and energising at the same time. He was nearly dead, and the Archon anticipated that he had about two minutes until he succumbed to his injuries. And Callidex wasn't even breathing hard.
Or, as he noticed, breathing at all.
"I told you, Archon, I am Time. I live outside it, command it, control it, bind it. You never had a hope of defeating me, for I am, in all essence, a god."
The Chief Librarian raised his arms and vanished, a transparent grey shadow of him moving backwards, replaying Callidex's movements in the battle and then rewound until it disappeared over the horizon. Bending Time, indeed.
Finally, a little too late, a Raider arrived. Fortunately, it was the one that carried Alisanna, the Splintered Mind's Haemonculus. She leapt off the Raider and grabbed the injured Archon around the waist, lifting him up even as he roared in agony.
"Be more careful next time," she whispered, stabbing a syringe into his arm and injecting some sort of drug into him.
The pain numbed, and suddenly unconsciousness claimed him.

Heretic! Daemon! Execute the Librarian! The Inquisition shall be hearing about this!
*Ahem* Glad I got that out of the way.

Nice update. Very descriptive ad it always pleases me to read about fellow Archons getting slain (Or almost slain, at least). It warms that tiny cold thing in my chest... what's it called... a heart?

Anyhow, I am looking forward to more! Very Happy

This drew me in to wanting to know more Smile It will be interesting to see how the Archon copes with not being the only superpowered killer on the battlefield once his bruised ego, I mean injuries are healed Very Happy

See, always have a Haemonculus on the payroll. You know it makes sense.

Good to see that you all like it. See, it's not only comedy that I write.

Teras blinked his eyes open, slowly, so as not to overload his senses after what must have been weeks with them shut. He hadn't died, but by Khaine, he had come close.

Astus Callidex would pay.

Alisanna saw he was once more conscious and strode over. She had altered her form yet again, dying the hair a bone white. An extra set of arms protruded from her torso not far below the natural set, and her limbs were incredibly thin. Her face, once very full, had had every ounce of fat ripped away, creating almost brutally sharp cheekbones.

"Glad to see you back in the world of the living, my archon," she bowed. "Keeping you alive and getting you back upon your feet within such a short time period was a difficult thing. I shall require a bit of extra... payment... for this service."

"I told you, Alisanna, I am not interested in your fawning advances," the Archon growled, rising to his feet and unsteadily walking to the door. The Haemonculus smiled and supported his arm.

"Ah well. I'll just have to wait," she smirked, escorting him to the door and withdrawing her arm from his when he reached it. A thought struck Teras, and he voiced it.

"What became of the raid, Alisanna? Has it been so long that I missed all the fun?"

The Haemonculus shifted uneasily. "We failed to find the item you were looking for, although we took many prisoners, including three Marines. As to how long you have been preoccupied, it has been only three days. If we are lucky, the Dark Crusader's planet will not have changed its location and the item may still be ours."

"We cannot count on that, Alisanna," he growled, the sound comparable to the deep snarl of a Clawed Fiend or a Khymera.

She bowed as he left. "The reward would outweigh the risk, my archon."

"I know, Haemonculus. I know."

Before I continue, some things about the Dark Crusaders that explain a lot:
-they are the 2nd Legion, exiled for modifying their gene-seed.
-the Inquisition hates them.
-nearly everyone else hate them too (save Blood Angels and Eldar; very few other Chapters know of them)
-Astus Callidex is not a very nice person.

That said, let's continue.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

The figure leaned forward in the bone-carved throne as Astus Callidex drew nearer.

"You have much to answer for, Astus," the figure growled in a voice so deep some of the syllables crackled. Power laced every one of these words, and despite himself Callidex flinched slightly before composing himself. "I was under the impression that Nirvana was impenetrable unless one had a deep knowledge of us."

"That is just it, lord," Callidex explained, "They studied us and somehow interpreted where Nirvana would be."

A pause. "Yet you were unable to see that this would happen?" the figure eventually rumbled.

"It was not so much a matter of being unable as it not crossing my mind to check."

"I do not consider that an excuse, Astus."

"It was not intended as an excuse, just an explanation," Callidex said, bowing. Something about his lord somehow kept him off guard. "Even I cannot properly see the threads of Time. Only the Farseers of the Eldar possess that power. I can twist it and guess its possibilities with great accuracy, but my powers are not limitless."

The figure was silent.

"There is some good news, though," Callidex added. "We managed to capture a prisoner, who is having information wrung out of his skull as wee speak. Turns out that the Kabal responsible was the Splintered Mind, a powerful but not overly well-known Kabal. They may yet try and attack us again."

"We must stop them. Release Ultima Umbrax upon the Dark City."

Callidex started in shock. "My lord, that is very risky. If Ultima was to be crippled or even slain-"

"I am more than confident in our ally's ability to deal with a mere city."

The Chief Librarian suddenly decided he was sick of being treated as an inferior. "Lord Isaiah, Commorragh is no mere city, as you put it. Could Ultima deal with not hundreds, not thousands, but tens of thousands of Ravagers? You can be sure that the Dark City will be quick to respond to any threat."

Isaiah stood and moved from the throne until he was standing nose to nose with the Chief Librarian. Callidex stared into the Chapter Master's eyes and refused to back down.

"Bring me the prisoner," Isaiah said quietly. "We will ask him as to the best course of action."

Callidex smiled viciously as he nodded in agreement. As he left to carry out Isaiah Eden's bidding, he allowed himself to momentarily pity the xenos creature who had earnt the ire of the Chapter Master of the Dark Crusaders Chapter.

Teras exited the training ring, panting heavily. His still-not-fully-healed wounds ached and some of the lesser ones had reopened and pulsed blood with every one of the Archon's heartbeats.

"Give me the report, Alisanna," he instructed his Haemonculus.

"Reaction times are point zero one five of a second slower than usual," she replied. "Not critical, but you'll have to take excess caution in the city now."

"I'll be fine, Haemonculus," he grunted as he tossed his venom blades to one side and detached the armour, glad to be rid of its purposely-heavy weight. "When was the meeting with Lord Vect?"

"Due in sixteen minutes, my Archon. You had better leave right away - the skin of the last fool to arrive late for a meeting with the Supreme Overlord still hangs bleeding from his palace."

"I know that. The preparations are already made and all I have to do is turn up and speak with the Supreme Overlord."

***

Teras knelt before the throne of Vect, terrified beyond reason. That a single being could convey so much menace and fear was a testament to just how completely Vect held the Dark City in thrall. He had been here for less than a minute, and already he wished he were not.

It was Vect who broke the silence and spoke first. "I know of your last raid, Archon Sithrasion."

"I would completely expect you to, Supreme Overlord."

Commorragh's master smiled, but the expression held no niceness. "What I am curious about is why you raided the Dark Crusaders."

Teras felt his blood run cold. How much, exactly, did Asdrubael Vect know? He told himself that he was being paranoid, that he had left no clues as to his ultimate intentions, yet the Archon of the Splintered Mind could not help but feel that the Supreme Overlord was stringing him out.

"There was more than one reason, Lord Vect," Teras said quickly.

"Go on."

Vect was smiling, a trick that Teras knew was designed to make him uneasily. Annoyingly, it was working.

"Well," he said, "The first reason was the obvious slave-taking and material gain. As we have never actually raided Nirvana, who knows what treasures were hidden there?"

It was the truth, or at least part of the truth. Teras held his breath, hoping Vect did not press the matter, yet not daring to believe that he wouldn't. If the Archon of the Black Heart was anything, it was incredibly intelligent.

Fortunately, the Supreme Overlord didn't. "Go on," he said again.

Teras breathed a sigh of relief and assured himself that Vect knew very little and was just picking at straws. "Well, Lord Vect, the second reason was to find out more about them and fill in Commorragh's data-banks. This was partially successful."

His confidence was shattered when Vect said casually, "Only partially? I must admit, I am disappointed, Teras Sithrasion."

He swallowed slowly. Those that the Supreme Overlord was disappointed in tended to regret it within a short period of time. If Vect had him killed, no Haemonculus in their right mind would resurrect him for fear of displeasing him.

"But go on," he finished.

Teras, still kneeling, forced himself to stop shaking and answer. "The third reason was that I was bored, and sought to find a foe that would be a challenge to the superiority of the Dark Kin."

Vect leaned back, nodding. "Yet the raid failed," he intoned. Teras nodded.

"We seriously underestimated them. Not even your own Kabal could have defeated the Dark Crusaders, Lord Vect. Their planetary defenses are astonishingly powerful and their psykers were devastating the fleet with barely the slightest show of powers."

"And you met a sorry fate at the hand of their Chief Librarian, name of Astus Callidex I do believe?"

Teras nodded again. "Callidex lives outside time. My blows were nigh all parried, and the one that did hit went right through him."

"You wield two venom blades. How could a Marine stop that force?" Vect said darkly.

"As I said, he lives outside of Time. I know of no force that could possibly stop him."

"Thank you, Teras. That will be all."

Teras Sithrasion bowed and hurried out of the throne room, shaking uncontrollably.

In retrospect, Asdrubael Vect had saved Teras' life in what he considered a delicious irony.

The Archon of the Splintered Mind still fumed to think about what had befallen him. For what seemed like the hundredth time, he went back over the catastrophic events that had shattered his Kabal.

***
Even when he had first stepped onto the Raider awaiting him outside the Supreme Overlord's palace, he had sensed something was wrong. Not amongst the guards or other occupants, but with the fabric of the Webway itself.

It could not possibly be a Craftworlder invasion in revenge for Tylara's murder, and mon'keigh of any kind were out of the question. That only left daemonic incursion, and the odds of that were incredibly low. Teras shook his head, blaming an overactive imagination and residual nervousness of the meeting with Vect.

He was proved wrong when a warp portal opened in the centre of Commorragh and a monster stepped through.

It was easily a hundred and fifty feet tall, plates of crackling metal bolted to a frame - a war machine bristling with half a dozen giant weapons on its shoulders alone and a pair of massive cannons mounted upon its arm.

On its own, this would have been a horrific sight, but what was truly terrifying was the malicious intelligence burning in the eyes of the beast.

Teras knew what it was. The question, how did a Titan of the Adeptus Mechanicus get here? And, more pressingly, why was it sentient?!

All this thought occurred in less than a second. When that second of shock and disbelief had passed, entropic beams of dark lance fire lit up the shadows and screamed through the air towards the Titan. All the shots hissed off of powerful energy shields surrounding the... thing.

Beside him, Alisanna screamed at the pilot to turn them around and get out of there, and without speaking Teras agreed. Nothing they had at ready disposal could stop a Titan.

"What is it?" he said, half to himself, half to whoever would listen.

"I don't know," Alisanna whispered back, clutching his arm tightly.

The Titan laughed, a deep bellow that shook the ground. Vect's face appeared upon the walls of Teras' fortress, broadcasted from holographic projectors hidden nearby.

"Oh no. No. NO!" Teras cried out, sensing what was about to happen. Damn the Supreme Overlord and his ego!

"What are you?" Vect said calmly. "Know before you answer that I have about a hundred aircraft ready to strike at you whenever I feel like it, so maybe you should start grovelling."

"Let them come," the Titan rumbled. "I am Ultima Umbrax, the Shadow Titan. A dozen worlds have ruptured from my very presence, yet you dare THREATEN ME?"

Ultima raised both arms and the cannons exploded, Raider-sized missiles streaming at a ridiculous rate to crash into Teras' fortress. Vect's face disappeared in the cloud of debris as shockwaves traveled to the ground and tore it apart. From that one volley, Teras' entire empire was destroyed.

"My Archon?" Alisanna said somewhat shrilly.

"What?" Teras snapped back, not taking his eyes off of the devastation wrought by the Dark Crusader's pet Titan.

"That raid may have been a very bad idea."

"Silence, Haemonculus. Driver, wait until that thing is gone and then take us back and look for any survivors."

The now Kabal-less Archon felt that it was a futile gesture. The lone Raider crept and hid in Commorragh's alleys as the Dark City sundered.

Well this was very odd, and a little confusing.

That aside, nicely written and I shall be interested to see what happens next Very Happy

Luck had been with them - they had picked up three survivors, Kabalite Warriors. Two were in fighting condition, one was not. Alisanna began healing the broken bones and shredded flesh of the latter, while Teras plotted his next move.

Ultima had disappeared half an hour ago, still mostly unharmed. Commorragh, though stunned, had not been dealt any severe damage, and Teras had been the Archon that had lost the most. Without a Kabal, there was little chance of him being able to continue his search for the nine crystals.

Unless...

Teras was, even for a Dark Eldar, very intelligent. One of the crystals had been found on a Tomb World, the other on Nirvana. There had to be a connection.

The only one he could think of was the crystals. The Necron one was clearly designed to counteract the Dark Crusaders - even if it had failed miserably. Following that train of thought, the Dark Crusader's crystal may very well counter the next hiding place. Unfortunately, he had no idea what the second crystal did - and now he never would.

"My Archon?" a warrior said, interrupting his thoughts. Teras looked down at a scroll of flesh.

"What is it?" he asked bluntly.

"A count of all the resources available to you, my Archon," the warrior replied. Teras took the scroll and began reading it.

"Two salvageable Raiders. This Raider. Me, Alisanna, eleven Kabalite Warriors," he read aloud. "One salvageable Ravager."

Teras threw the list aside in disgust. Four vehicles, with only enough troops to crew them and no more. Fortunately, he still had his Haemonculus.

Thinking of important people made him think of something Astus Callidex had said.

"I told you, Archon, I am Time. I live outside it, command it, control it, bind it."

Grasping for straws as he was, it hit Teras - what was the source of the Chief Librarian's power? What else could create a monster like Callidex save the crystal he was searching for?

It was only a quick scan of his mind before Teras remembered what such an ability could be useful for.

The Archon grinned. He had been set back, but he was not out of the game yet.

Just discovered while reading over the last part that Ultima is very poorly explained. He's a Titan, who is also a psyker, and is very sentient. Essentially, he's a daemon that serves the Imperium and has no ties to a god in the warp.

That aside, the Marines are out of it for a while. Teras has much bigger concerns than them at the moment, and his vendetta against Astus Callidex will have to wait.

Teras silently slipped down from the Raider in front of the sealed tomb, twin venom blades clutched. Alisanna followed him down and landed on all fours.

"Are you sure?" she breathed.

"Certain," he replied, arrogance dripping from the words. "This tomb is the location of the third crystal."

"I do not mean to question your supreme authority, my Archon, but I fail to see how you can possibly know this," the Haemonculus said, rising to her feet.

"Ah, Alisanna, there is a story behind that," he smiled, purposely speaking to her as if she was a child. "During a raid, many passes ago, we laid siege to this world and wiped it clean of mon'keigh life. The prisoners we captured spoke of a mystical tomb, unable to be opened, and blamed it for their bad luck. This is the tomb."

"How is it related to your theory of the crystals?" she asked, taking the bait.

"It cannot be opened."

"Yes, you have already said it."

"But what if I rewound its time stream so that it was never closed?"

His Haemonculus' eyes widened as she grasped what he meant. Teras smiled viciously. "Before you ask how I can do that without the second crystal, think of the Necrons and their technology."

Alisanna did, and burst out in laughter. "Ingenious, my Archon."

"The only question now, is how I can attain a Chronometron."

Alisanna reached inside her Tauskin robes and pulled out a small sphere. Surprised that she had one, he nevertheless reached out and took the Chronometron from her hand.

"I am useful in things aside from the obvious, am I not, my Archon?" she smirked, running a hand through her hair. He grunted and ignored her as he tried to discern how the time-bending item worked. Her attraction to him was bordered on the obsessive, and he was growing tired of it.

It wasn't as though she was worth the attention, anyway.

With a slight hiss, the Chronometron suddenly activated and Time unwound. The seal of the tomb greyed and phased back into the past much as Astus Callidex had done on Nirvana. In moments, the door was open.

"Ladies first," he said courteously, gesturing for Alisanna to enter the tomb. If there were any traps, they weren't going to be sprung by him!

"I'd appreciate the gesture if I didn't know the reason you wanted me ahead of you," she chuckled before stepping through the dark doorway.

"Too. Smart. For. Your. Own. Good," Teras muttered under his breath, trying to avoid breathing the disgusting tomb air. This place was definitely not made by mon'keigh.

There were no traps, though, so his caution was unnecessary. They soon came upon the central chamber, and nestled on a golden plinth was the third crystal.

Teras gazed around the room. Murals decorated the walls and though no light sources were apparrent the room was dimly illuminated. It was the plinth that gave away the identity of the tomb's makers, though.

"The Old Ones," Alisanna breathed, stealing the words from his mouth. "Incredible."

"It matters not," the Archon spat, striding forward to grasp the crystal.

Almost as soon as he did so, the light flickered and died. Though he could still see, Teras started in surprise.

"A trap?!" his Haemonculus called.

"I'm not sure. Be ready for anything!"

They backed up against each other just as the first light-creature appeared. Screaming like a banshee, a sound cold enough to chill even the shrivelled heart of a Dark Eldar, it zoomed towards them. Alisanna raised all four arms as if prepared to fight when the formless, scintillating monster dived into the crystal.

The light returned to the tomb.

"The power of illusion," Teras smiled. "Come, let us go. There are still seven to collect."

And a vendetta against Astus Callidex, but that would have to wait.
