 General Army Building Question

Hi,

I am still quite new to WH40 (started last year) and now that I have about 1300k points I was thinking about how to continue building my army.

Until now I just bought the models which I thought look cool and have a nice background story (poor Talos didn't perform well with index). But now that our new codex is coming, I would like to build an army which is at least semi-competitive.

Now a general question. Should I focus my army on one thing (like shooting) or go for a more general allround army which hast shooting, CC, and some tanky models?

Especially for the 1.5k point range, it could be useful to have 3 patrols (raiding party). 1 cabal for shooting, 1 wych for CC and 1 coven for securing objectives and being tanky. For 1CP you get 2 extra warlord traits, and the prophets of flesh warlord trait basically pays for this.

Or is it better to go with cabals only and lots of shooting power?

I would make a solid kabal core, and build from there. 2 Archons 30 ish kabalites with transports and three ravagers. From there you can expand with coven or wych allied detachments for speedy cc or resilience.

I don't have the codex in my possesion yet, but I speculate you can go multiple ways.

As long as you make sure each unit has a function you can easily mix and match.
After saying that, I think kabals usually work fine with both others, but cult and coven have a lot of overlap in offensive power but different stat lines so might need some work.
In a vacuum if there are wyches and wracks on the board there is no reason not to shoot the wyches first (they deal more damage and die faster). That being said if those wracks occupy an objective, the choice becomes harder, if the wyches are in melee and the choise is fight wyches in hth or shoot wracks the choice is for most armies harder still. Thus it can work and some units work really well, ad some first turn reaver charges to let the coven survive the first round of shooting is not a bad deal. Kabalites are easiest to use, coven and cult have some great units, but take a bit more effort to get the most from.
Finally a full kabal/cult/coven army also seems to work (although cult and expecially coven might need some scourges etc to help)

Yes, that is how I plan to play it.

Kabals as backline shooting force. Wyches/Succubus as front CC units. Coven Wracks + Talos as backline deep strike security and objective holders.

EDIT: Now that haywire blaster is better talos should also be a little better in shooting although it is best at CC.

You can either commit to one paradigm, or split like you mentioned. The only thing to keep in mind is that we're not very durable, so if, for example, all of your anti-armor depends on the one Ravager with Dark Lances, you're in trouble if your opponent kills that Ravager (which they can do).

So whatever approach you go with, the one overarching theme you HAVE to use is redundancy. You need multiple units targeted at the same role, even if it's not the same unit. As an example, Hellions and Reavers can both be used to get in quick and tie up shooty things. Different units, but in this case, same role.

I'd say Reavers and Hellions are great to use together, because they do very different things.

Reavers alone will rarely kill your opponent.

Hellions alone will get shot of the table.

But reavers can tie up the enemy to prevent them from shooting your Hellions, and Hellions can kill them afterwards.

Yeah I really want to try a solid mix of hellions/reavers in my post-codex lists, just waiting for gangs of commorragh to get back in stock so I can get some hellions.

I see a lot of posts mentioning hellions are super glass cannons, they'll wither under any sort of fire and while that's definetly true I feel like with other fast threats like reavers, maybe scourges it will give hellions a little more time without getting shot.

And you can always spend some cp to give them hard to hit, which can save them.

deepstrike -> move 14" over the enemy using the chains strat for a wave of mortal wounds ->shoot-> charge.

my whole army flies so i plan on using those chains an awful lot.

So I just read a rumor that the Harlequin codex will include a 120-point fortification type model (like the Nurgle trees), that functions as a Webway Gate for all Aeldari models. This could completely up-end our codex.

Well, maybe just for me. I was intending on throwing some Harlequins into my collection anyway, and if I can basically create a new deployment point for my reserve elements without burning tons of CPs (which neatly also solves the issue of transporting HQs), that will be a dream come true.

Yeah I suppose it will be a handy option, but we're not sure how it works yet so I'm holding my reservations until I see it. Plus yeah it will be handy to save a couple cps from less deep strike, but a portal also isn't a versatile is just straight up deep strike from stuff like screaming jets so I'm skeptical that it's going to change much for our army.

Regardless I'm glad they are making it, a webway portal is a cool thematic piece of terrain for our army.
