Summon what you need to me is the opposite of ineffective IMO (if all units are able to be summon give or take a couple)

For Daemons maybe if you can summon the units you need, if you need AT and you cant summon it due to lack of options too, then i understand.

But looking at it for a DE PoV, we have Scourges, Trueborns etc... if we needed more AT, WWP in Trueborn with Blasters and DL's etc....

If new summon (I dont have the Chaos book, its the only one i dont have so i dont know what can and cant be summon now) cant get you what you need, then yes it is ineffective.

Precisely.

+, the feel of the new summon rule is great. You don't have a small squad hidden in the backstage, you have an entire army waiting there. And while you can't empty your kabal's base on a single raid (other kabals might take advantage of your foolishness), you have absolute control over what units will come to reinforce. It just feels like you are the leader of a huge military organization (a feeling W40k often fails to deliver, when you see that an Ork Waagh is something like... 100, 150 models maybe ?).

See I liked Daemon lists (especially ones that used Wyrdvane Psykers) that would allow me to summon masses of units every turn. Now all that has to be set aside. If half my first wave of summons gets blown off the board while I'm conjuring more, that's points gone for the entirety of the game now. There is literally no reason I can think of why I would not just start the game with all my Daemons on the field since the best I can hope for with a summon now is to place them 9" away from an enemy model. For Dark Eldar it's different, it gives us the ability to hold stuff in reserves and essentially deep strike it, but for its original intended purpose it's about as useful as entering a boxing match with one hand tied behind your back.

Demons with Wyrdvane Psyker? Whatever floats your boat but you don't need those since demons are powerful Psyker on their own. Or were it.

I don't think these summoning lists were the intended purpose to begin with. Otherwise they wouldn't have changed it. Nobody likes playing a 1500 point game against 3000 points. It's just not fun. Last edition I world have never played against this stuff. Rather pack my things and go.

Why bother?

I played againt it once in 7th, he summoned many more units. It was about an 8 hour game... i won as DE sadly just b.c of Mass fire of long range shots (he didnt have long range at all, he went full out summoning).

Either of us like it and either played it again....

How it works is REALLY COOL!

You dont take "X" amount of poitns (Lets say 500pts), when you "summon" you pick a unit from your codex and "Summon" that unit given the rules of the power (some powers say they DS, some say within X inches of the summoner etc...)

Its basically a Sideboard that you bring on through a character.

The bad thing about it is, if those characters die you cant summon, but a WWP acting like the summon would be AMAZING.

If there was a "Summoning Pool" universal rule for dark elder that would be awesome.
Being able to drop any unit in your collection within points set aside (Summoning Pool) anywhere on table would give you some insane tactical flexibility.

But I think it would fit the Eldar black guardians or harlequins better thematically.

I suspect WWP will be more akin to the 7e version, allowing a unit to be placed 'in reserve' and deployed in later turns. Whilst I like the idea of summoning, I don't really see it as fitting the WWP.

Why not?
Imagine an Archon that acts like a cartoon villian:
Tanks? Hah, I knew you would bring tanks all along, feel the Wrath of my Ravagers!
Infantry? How obvious, you fool! Razorings, attack!
A flanking attack? How uncreative, I saw that a mile away. Mandrakes manifest from shadows!

Edit: An over the top Anime does the trick too.

I always wondered at the villains picking the right units to attack... why not sending everything at once?

I don't think it should be summon either. We have limited resources, dedicated to different spots across the planet. Deamons are practically infinite, just depends on the Psyker how many can enter our world

I hope for multiple units deep striking, or at least a character holds it and brings one unit

Well, as has already been mentioned, it wouldn't be representative of 'unlimited resources'; it would be representative of the fact that archons are supposed to be master planners and strategists, with minds that see wheels turning within wheels and such, and that they've probably already planned for any contingency - so, it's basically a "ahhh. everything is going according to plan - send in the _____ !"

I never really liked how the wwp functioned.  It seemed very wrong given the fluff.

What I'd like to see is being able to use Command points to create a portal on the field during the deployment phase.  it would function as an additional table edge for all eldar type units.

In other words it wouldnt be carried by someone, but rather a terrain feature.   It should also have stats so that it could be destroyed by the enemy. Also, if one is deployed then all eldar units should be able to be put into reserve.

But how else am I supposed to sacrifice a Haemonculi in a raider as a tax for using my webway portal?

Oh man, those were the days.

Back... way back in 3ed, Haemonculi could ride bikes and they where really cheap points wise
