PostSubject: Please help me decide between 2 1000pt Ynnari Lists   Fri Jun 23 2017, 11:10

Having a 1000pt game with friends soon and I'd like to give Ynnari (and Yvraine in particular) a go.

Two possible lists so far:

Ynnari Patrol Detachment:
Yvraine – 132
5 Warriors w/ Blaster – 50
- Sybarite w/ PGL
5 Warriors w/ Blaster – 50
- Sybarite w/ PGL
5 Warriors w/ Blaster – 50
- Sybarite w/ PGL
Kabalite Trueborn w/ 4 Blasters – 122
- Dracon w/ PGL, Agoniser
Raider w/ Dark Lance and Shock Prow – 116
Venom w/ 2 Splinter Cannons – 95
Venom w/ 2 Splinter Cannons – 95
Venom w/ 2 Splinter Cannons – 95
Ravager w/ 3 Disintegrators and Shock Prow – 186
1000

Pretty standard DE list really. Yvraine can either hang back to buff the Ravager or else hitch a lift in the Raider with the Warriors or Trueborn to the frontline. The Shock Prows and Agoniser are just to make up points.

Ynnari Outrider Detachment:
Yvraine – 132
5 Kabalite Warriors w/ Blaster
- Sybarite w/ PGL
5 Warp Spiders – 122
- Exarch w/ 2 Deathspinners, Power Blades
3 Shining Spears – 132
- Exarch w/ Star Lance
3 Shining Spears – 132
- Exarch w/ Star Lance
3 Shining Spears – 132
- Exarch w/ Star Lance
5 Dark Reapers – 180
- Exarch w/ Reaper Launcher
Raider w/ Dark Lance and Shock Prow – 116
999pts

This one is aimed at making more specific use of Strength from Death and Yrvaine, but it ended up almost entirely Eldar in the process. If you're wondering, the Eldar models are based on the conversions and proxies I have to hand.

Yvraine will hang back with the Reapers, and one or both might begin the game embarked inside the Raider for protection (ideally, they'll get out immediately and Yvrain will Word of the Phoenix them for an extra shooting phase, but if there's nothing in sight they'll instead use it to redeploy).

My initial thought is that the top list is probably stronger, simply by virtue of having more models and more redundancy. However, I think the second list might be a bit more fun and would perhaps be a better test of Strength from Death.

Any thoughts?

I'd really like to see those conversions.

Me personally I prefer the first one but think the lack of transport for your war lady kind of sad.

I don't know the ability of the star lances. Are They Any good in hunting vehicles? If yes, that list might be better but the DE list us is working great with target saturation.

So try the second one (and show us those conversions)

The Dark Eldar Codex sucks. You probably won just because your enemy loaded his dice to loose. Never forget this mantra and spread the word. Mention it in every discussion possible, people can´t get enough of that valuable information and need to be reminded regularely.

Well, that's basically the point of the Raider - it's so she can ride with one of the other squads.

I don't like putting characters on their own in transports with the new rules, since if said transport is destroyed they're auto-killed on a 6.

Probably not a major risk (especially with our vehicles having gotten more durable), but one I'd still rather not take.

They have a single S8 AP-4 D2 shooting attack (6" range), but if they get the charge the Exarch then gets 3 attacks with the same stats. The standard Laser Lances are the same except S6. I think they should be okay against most vehicles.

They're in various states of completion, but I'm happy to show you what I've got so far.  Smile

Whether or not I convert my Reavers into Shining Spears will probably depend on how they do in a couple of trial games. if they work well, the plan is to use the spare spears/poles from (IIRC) the Raider kits. I've already used one in an unrelated conversion:

Spoiler:

Instead of the scythe blade, I'd like to add some sort of gun barrel (to represent their shooting attack) - either in place of the spearhead or just below it. Probably the former as it would then let me used the spear models that have skulls covering the tips. Hopefully I'll also be able to get most of them in a posture more appropriate for a lance (with it facing forward).

I'm using my old friend here to represent Yvraine (or, more accurately, using Yvraine's rule to represent him Wink ):

Spoiler:

The Warp Spiders are almost done in terms of modelling, except that I need to find more appropriate weapons for them. I think Shredders might work well for that (assuming I can find enough). Not sure what to do for the Exarch though. Maybe use the one with Hydra Gauntlets and try to affix a Shredder to each?

Anyway, this is what I've got so far:

Spoiler:

One irritating thing is that I could have sworn that I had a different jetpack for the Exarch to make him stand out more. A couple of the packs have come off once or twice, so now I'm wondering if I glued the wrong one back on.  Embarassed

I'm also trying to decide whether I should either trim the packs a bit (thinking of the guns especially) or else try to decorate/disguise them a bit more.

Finally, these are my Dark Reapers:

Spoiler:

Aside from the paint scheme (I was mostly just testing out some effects), I'm actually really pleased with how these turned out. The only thing I don't like is the Exarch's 'scythe'. I think I'll either try and make a scythe out of different bits or else turn it into a knife or such.

Anyway, thanks for your advice, Captain. As always, it was much appreciated.

Update:

I realised that I'd made a mistake with the second list (I'd thought units in a Ynnari army could use each others transports, but I was wrong). Anyway, I ended up swapping out the Raider and Kabalites for a Solitaire (just wanted to give her a go), Clawed Fiend and 3 Razorwing Flocks (just some chaff to screen units and trigger SfD).

Anyway, I got to use the updated list in a game today. It was a 2v2 - Me and a SM army against an Ork army and a Nid army.

The SM player had something like:
- Tech priest on Bike
- 5 Marines with plasmagun in a lasplas razorback
- 5 Marines with plasmagun in a lasplas razorback
- 10 Sturnguard in a drop pod
- Vindicator

The Ork Player had
- 10 Nobz plus a Warboss in a Battlewagon
- 10 Boyz and a Nob in a Trukk
- 10 Boyz and a Nob in a Trukk
- 10 Boyz and a Nob in a Trukk
The Nobz and Warboss had Big Choppas and there were various rockets scattered around

The Nid army had
- Zoanthrope
- 3 Venomthropes
- 4 Warriors with a venom cannon
- Broodlord
- 10 Genestealers
- 30 Gaunts with devourers
- ~20 more gaunts with devourers
- 20-30 hormagants

I'm not going to do a full battle report - long story short we lost the battle of attrition. Badly. Neither of us had the weight of attacks or shots to take on the nid hordes, nor the resilience to weather the weight of shots/attacks.

I do have some thoughts regarding the game:

- SfD is fun. I think I'd take it over PfP simply because it's much more interactive and gives me options that I wouldn't otherwise have.

- Yvraine is good. Given her speed and the range of her powers, I'm now less worried about running her in a more traditional list (with more guns and transports).

- Bloody hell genestealers are good. Just 10pts per model for a 5++ S4/T4 and 4 attacks with rending.

- Dark Reapers have good damage output but I dislike how fragile they are. I think I'll just take a Ravager in future. Even if my group rules that I can't cast Word of the Phoenix on it, it's likely to at least survive long enough to get off a decent number of shots.

- Honestly, I don't think I like playing these elite lists with Eldar models. Characters aside, I tend to favour quantity over quality and so I really don't like having so many points invested in such small, fragile squads.

In summary, it was a fun game and I'm glad I tried Ynnari and Yvraine, but I don't think I'd use this sort of list again.

Oh well, time to see how my Necrons do in 8th.
