thanks guys. I'm really having a great time painting this army.
I got bored tonight and decided to fix a Sslyth model that fell off of my desk resulting in the sword snapping off. I decided to see what the model looks like with a Scourge carbine and Kabalite/Wyche arms.

I like it. What do you guys think?

Looks awesome. Great way to add some more variesty to the Court. Can't wait to see how you plan to pain him. If only the Ssylth came with two head options as well...

Yeah, a ture DE, he doesn't paint his miniatures, he pains them Wink
Just kidding Smile

I guess a variant with an opened jaw would look just great. It really is a pity.

Nonetheless, the converion looks pretty nice ESE.

Yeah, a head with an open jaw showing fangs was exactly what I was thinking in my head, would be so epic.

But back to ESE's awesome minis, how do you manage to get through all of your vehicles looking so beautiful? Just a color scheme and how to achieve it has been giving me difficulty for months now as I look at my Chaos black primed raiders,. The sails, hull color and markings just flow so nicely.

Just finished up the banner for the Blasterborn leader. Mixed on the Ice Blue field, but it's done. I'm going to do the two banners for their Venom that I started a couple of months ago the same way. Hopefully the blue grows on me...I'm not really sold as of now.

I thank you for the flattering words, but I really wish that there was some skill involved that I could take credit for. I know a few friends that are artists/designers with formal training. This is the 4th army that I have painted in purple of some sort with green accents and gold.(First DE army, Warmachine Cryx, CSM's that I never finished, and current DE). It has been a lot of trial and (LOTS OF) error on my part. I have had a great deal of helpful color selection advice from them and people on this site including GAR and numerous others that have given me tips and suggestions. I have zero knowledge of useful color wheel theory, but have been told that using cold (blues, greens, purples), warm (browns, Yellows), or hot colors (Red, Orange, Yellows) together with a complimentary accent color really makes the models look cohesive. I used purple and jade for my first DE army. With the new sails on the Raiders and skin hanging off the belts of damn near every model I have been able to add an accent color that a designer friend recommended to complement the purple (Bubonic Brown/Bleached Bone). Honestly, I stared at the sail of the Ravager for about 6 months before I gave up and asked someone for advice. After getting the advice I went around in circles trying to figure out if he was right. I said "screw it" one day and just did it. He was right (as he always is!)

My point is-if you can't decide on a color scheme, ask someone with good color theory knowledge. As proof positive that I have no idea and still can't make up my mind after getting really good advice take a look at this thread from early September:
http://www.thedarkcity.net/t1189-need-help-pn-a-color-choice-for-venom-banner
I'm just now getting around to making up my mind and painting these things even after all of these helpful people gave great ideas.

Hope that helps! (and didn't sound like a lecture! Razz )

Wow, what a post Wink
I actually know what you are speaking of all too well.
My main problem right now is getting ideas for my Kabal's icon- and my banners obviously.

But your TBs leader and his banner look just neat! I love your models, great work!

And one question: What's the colour(s) you used for the leader's hair? And how are you doing the skin? I love the skintone.

Thats such a characterful model. I love it when models have such an individual look. The work on the banner is just beautiful. I know I cant freehand stuff like that but it still gets me motivated on working more on models.

thanks guys
red Head-the hair is from the GW site:
Kabal Green: 50/50 mix of Enchanted Blue and Dark Angels Green.
Webway Green: 60/20/20 mix of Rotting Flesh, Kabal Green and Scorpion Green.

I use Orkhide foundation paint in place of DA Green. I find it just has a flatter, more realistic tone to it.

For the skin I use a mixture that I think is roughly 1:3:2 Shadow Grey/Nyss Flesh(P3 paints)/Space wolves Grey. I shade with Leviathan Purple and Flesh wash. Highlight with watered down Fortress grey, top highlight of 50/50 Fortress Grey/White thinned down.

The freehand runes are pretty easy. I draw them on with a 05 Micron detail pen(.45mm). After giving it an hour or so to dry I paint them in and highlight. It looks a lot harder than it really is. Try it on a piece of paper first and then let it rip when you feel confident!

Just saw your Blasterborn here and in the Gallery, that's a really nice colour scheme, and a great looking banner Evil. You must have one sweet-looking army when its all together!

If it ever gets together or finished...Thanks Gobs, I appreciate the compliments. Finally got the 20 minutes that I needed to finish my first Raider. Lighting really sucks in the room; sun was not quite at the right angle yet to use natural light through the window and the CFL bulb that I use is crap. Here it is(finally):

And blurry bad light pic #2:

I lost one of the hooks that the splinter rifles usually hang from and haven't figured out what I'm going to hang there to fill the gaps under the sail. I'll probably use the holstered pistol from the venom kit and hanging skulls/and or sheathed knife from the Raider kit. At any rate, I'm REALLY glad to be done with this thing. It was supposed to the first thing that I finished from my October vow. Mad Now I can finally get to converting that Raider with the Talos tail gunner for my Wracks.

(This is a repost of what I put in the modeling section. I thought that I would take credit for it twice!)
Finally got around to doing my Talos tail gun conversion for the Raider that I am painting for my Wracks. Actually remembered to take pics as I went along (in case I forgot how to do it for the next time!) and thought that I would share the pain:
I started by gluing in the gunner deck and then cut out the decking to make room for the tail to come from below in the hull.

Note-I ended up later trimming out the banner mounting holes as well to make room for the tentacles.

To mount the tail I used a left over forearm guard from the Talos kit. The tail fits perfectly into the wrist end of the guard. This was to be cut to form the base below the hull.

I then trimmed the angle of the lower edge of the guard to accommodate the angle of the tail when installed. I made sure to put the sail in place to insure that they wouldn't interfere with each other too much.

I simply put a decent amount of green stuff ( I use the GF9 brand) on the base before applying glue and simply pushing into place. I did have to trim off a little bit of the hull floor railing to make it flatter.

I then took two left over tentacles from the Cronos pod and applied green stuff to then lightly before applying glue and simply pushing them into place under the curve of the hull. (This hides the greenstuff under the hull without showing while forming a good mounting)

The gun for the tail was fairly easy to do(Sorry, no pics). I simply cut barrels off of Kabalite DL's, removed the stinger pod barrels on the normal Talos gun mount, and glued them together. I used the gyro-balancing-thingies from the DL's to cover the hole where the DL normally mounts on the Raider. I tried to make a faceless, female torso with the little arms from the Talos to look like a living, nightmarish decoration on the front of a ship, but it really didn't take. I might tyr to figure out how to pull it off for Urien's personal ride.

Any thoughts/critiques/different ideas/ and of course, stealing are highly encouraged.

Worked out how I wanted to make the pilot work. I couldn't decide between modifying his existing arm or giving him another one. In the true Haemonculitic(?) spirit I opted to just give him another one sprouting from his spinal hump.

If it ever stops raining I'll shoot some primer and get this thing going!

I really like how this turned out and the pictures are nice and easy to follow as well.

But I don't understand why you put a dual weapon in the front.

I went back and forth on what to do for the DL. I wanted to try to do a single DL, but felt that it didn't retain the Talos tail feel without two of them. It looked strange without two and none of the other tries with a single DL turned out well. (No pictures of those failed creations No )

Long story short-I got lazy and took the easy way out! lol! My hope is that people get distracted by all of the tentacles and don't notice the extra barrel.

Progress shots of the Coven Raider. I know that darn near everyone knows the trick for using a stencil or marker to get nice round fields to paint symbols on, but I thought that I'd share my little washer trick for those new to painting. Works with or without and airbrush. Too much moisture in the air when I sprayed the last layer on the sail Mad )

Sail:

Still have to clean it up, but you get the idea. Cheap washers from the hardware store, tape, and easy circles. Finished the Wrack pilot. Makes me want to paint more Coven models for sure.

Your Coven scheme is pretty badass.

So after you do that Washer trick, you then would paint a symbol over the black? That looks like a pretty awesome trick.

I paint the black with my black mixture and highlight. You can also just hold something in place (a coin, or mini base works too) and trace the out line with a Micron detail pen (I use a 05 or .45mm) and then paint in whatever you want. That is the way that I've done it for the other models in this log, but thought that I'd break out an old trick for this one. After that I draw on the runes freehand and then paint in. I'll take pics as I go along for this, but it won't be for another couple of days with all of the lessons that I have to write for my classes. Mad

So you like the purple sail with black hull? I'm thinking of doing purple/magenta runes in the hull with teal gems on the sail/weapons to tie them into the other models. I wanted the coven models to look different while keeping with the colors of the other models.

Coven Raider progress pics:

I plan on getting the runes drawn on the hull tonight after class and the design on the sail. I'm thinking of going with the Ebon Sting design from the codex in white on the black field of the sail and purple runes on the hull like my other stuff? Any comments/critiques/suggestions appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing the runes painted onto the hull, your ideas for the coloring of those sound good imho.

Thanks guys. I started the runes on the hull. Wanted to show how I draw them on, and then just paint them in. I don't necessarily have a design in mind when I draw them. (Obviously, they all don't turn out how I want, but look okay more or less when done)
I start by drawing them on the hull with a 05 Micron pen(.45mm)

As you can see they don't have to go on perfect when you draw them. They will be painted over when the ink has dried. This usually takes about 2 hours to have them not smear on contact.

Then I just paint them in.

The designs look a little fat now, but when I apply the highlighting layers tomorrow it will clean up nicely. Spots where I went outside of the lines will get cleaned up after the runes are done. I would simply spend the 10-15 minutes to paint them now, but it's midnight after a really long day. I'll post pictures tomorrow of the finished runes and(hopefully) the finished Raider. This Raider will finally put me over the 1000pt mark of new painted stuff! I was going to paint a Ravager next, but I'll probably paint some more Wyches to reward myself for painting all of these vehicles lately. Maybe some Reavers...they don't need transports!
