PostSubject: Soulburst Potential   Tue Feb 14 2017, 11:42

Just a thought, apologies if this has already come up in another thread but I've just had a possible idea of a suicide squad that could do some serious damage. So the load it is 5 wraithguard, yvraine and then a bunch of cheap disposable independent characters (whatever the cheapest possible option is).
I would equip one of the characters with a WWP and get them to deepstrike in as close as possible to the opponents units, blast one unit, use Yvraines 14" soulburst bubble to blast another unit. You've killed two units already. Now, this is where I think it could get interesting (potentially, please correct me if this is garbage). You position your unit so your cheap ICs will take the fall should you get shot at in your opponents turn and should one of these ICs die, your unit would then get another soulburst action immediately, to move into cover or blast the crap out of whatever they can! Could this work??

No reason why that wouldn't work that way Smile it's like an existing D-Scythe Wraithbomb, but you get to shoot effectively 4 times in a game turn.

Actually, how does the '1 per turn' Soulburst restriction work? Is it per player turn (in which case that won't work), or per game turn (in which case it would work).

If you go second then it would work regardless Smile

The way I understood it is it is one soul burst action per player turn. So effectively you come in, wipe a unit, soulburst and wipe another and then in your opponents turn you can wipe 1 more (providing he kills an IC), and then in your turn repeat the above steps. Means potentially killing 3 units per game turn!

If it is that way then it's really rather powerful, if a little situational (it's dependent on you or your opponent completely wiping squads) Smile

Well this is why I would throw in the ICs as they count as units in their own right, so if my opponent wants to deal with he wraithguard he will have to kill the ICs first which will trigger a soulburst action each time they die (unless he wipes more than one a turn)

Hunh, thats an interesting way to play it. Most people were thinking along the lines of "smallest squad", but I guess an IC is the definition of the smallest squad.

That will certainly add some mobility to foot clown squads. Not sure how effective it will be to a 100 pt WWP caddy though (with a meduase bomb ofc)

Yeah it just sort of hit me, if ICs trigger soulburst, wouldnit not be crazy to just have an escort of cheap ICs for a wraithguard unit that your opponent has to deal with and can't keep ignoring and therefore every time they try to deal with it, BOOM soulburst to the face!

So, fill a couple of elites slots with IC Shadowseers who can go around casting Veil of Tears. They're either a royal PITA, or they die and trigger a Soulburst Smile

Yep exactly and you could also throw in a Shadowseer with the mask of secrets and a couple of DJs just to mess with their units even more. I guess the aim is to creat a "SoulBomb" that the opponent cannot simply ignore but also gets to react when your opponent tries to deal with you. I'm gunna have to try this out in a game!

I'm wondering whether a sprinkling of Heroes Paths might be nasty and fragile enough to fit nicely with this. Kill the Shadowseer and a Death Jester shoots you. Kill the Death Jester and the Solitaire charges you. Kill the Solitaire and a Shadowseer charges you Smile

Either that, or kill one of them and one of the others skips merrily away into LOS-blocking cover Smile

Yep that could be interesting! I think there are quite a few combinations available here and a bit of trial and error should help reveal which ones work and which don't. I'll definitely be trying the "soulbomb" wwp though

Another idea for Soulburst.

Lets say you've got a squad of Harlies next to a depleted squad of Marines and a full squad of Marines.

Shoot the depleted squad, wipe them out, shoot the full squad with Soulburst and now you can assault them because they were targeted in your shooting phase Smile

Oh yeah! Again that's yet another useful thing to remember with Soulburst! I suppose if you shoot a unit and wipe it you couldn't then soulburst into combat with another unit as you cannot break that rule so yeah, shooting twice actually works out better!

Oh, another thing. What's the dirt-cheapest IC we can field in quantity? I think Shadowseers are pretty cheap, and relatively nasty for their points cost.

How about a Shadowseer for every unit? Veil of Tears until they get shot in which case you get instant retaliation Smile

Is that worth 60pts?

Yeah I think it is shadow seers and let's not foget shenanigans that they have with grenade launchers and they aren't actually THAT bad in CC either. Could be a good shout!

You're going to run out of elite slots fairly sharpish though.

That is true @Count Adhemar but could we not double up on the detachment to resolve that?

You can, unless your meta restricts taking more than one of the same detachment or limits the number of detachments allowed.

I think Heroes Path counts as a single whole unit rather than three individuals together, sadly. Otherwise is an interesting idea!

@PsychicHobo Well you could still keep them within 7" of each other?

They are 3 individual units. They just can't join other units.

Keep in mind that GW has also stated that the Iyanden supplement is still official and allowed, so if you bring in an allied iyanden supplement, you can fit up to 10 70-point spiritseers in a single CAD.

Despite not being ynarri and therefore disabling SfD in a unit where they are present, if you sprinkled them in multiple ynarri units that, themselves were made up of characters, with careful positioning you could basically always look out sir the wounds onto the spiritseers, then when the spiritseer dies, suddenly the unit is wholly ynarri again, and able to benefit from the SfD rule.

Not sure it'd be a game winning strategy. Just a thought that popped into my head.

@BetrayTheWorld that is a good point! Rather than having sacrificial "units" as such I think ynnari could really benefit from these "sacrificial" characters who lets face it, can still have a part to play other than simply dying!

Really nice ideas in this thread!

Maybe we can work something with single clawed fiend running near troupes? Their soulburst action can be a 12" mouvement and they can kill (or tarpit) a small unit in cover. If the opponent ignore it the beast charges before the troupe to eat overwatch, if he kills it you get your soulburst and it costed 30 instead of 60 for a shadowseer. I'd love to throw a single clawed fiend in a unit of 10 lootas in a ruin.

Sorry Vlad, just want to clarify, when you say 1 soulburst per turn, you mean 1 soulburst per unit per turn right?

And the rule book reads: "a unit can only make a soulburst action once per turn."

No idea if that's a game turn or player turn.
