My assumption is that Drukhari is something analogous to 'True Kin.' Not literally the word 'Eldar,' but something signifying their claim to be the real Eldar.

Roll the 'r', make the 'k' as hard as you can, then linger on the 'are' afterwards...

Drrruk-hARE-i.

I'm tentatively on board!

As for the names Aeldari and Drukhari I like them both.  We tend to use more Ks than Cs (Khaine, Klaive, Kheradruak, Karandaras, etc.) so Drukhari makes sense in that way, and unless there is an official pronunciation guide I'm pronouncing the first name Eel-dari as the 'ae' in Daemon and Aegis is pronounced 'ee', but that is just my interpretation.  I like having the word Eel in our name because eels are slippery, elegant (in water anyway) and very dangerous - like us!  Maybe Eels should be named after us instead of the other way around...

I really like that interpretation. That (and this is just my opinion) really captures both our veil of cultured civility and amoral brutality simultaneously.

And I wouldn't worry about the name. Names are essentially words and our actions will speak louder regardless if we're continually known as Dark Eldar or Drukhari.

GW can call us whatever they want in their updates as long as they make sure we're not called "stat padding" when we show up at ITC events anymore.

What do you mean by that? I've never heard that phrase before (probably because I've never been to a tournament of any kind).

It is a harlequin slang word that is gaining popularity on the craftworlds, and it loosely translates to "Darkies".

That is my actual fear, which of course my reptilian internet brain translates to 100% certainty and then demand that I rage impotently about it online.

Tournament teams will sometimes bring bad players or armies with the expectation they will be an easy win for otherwise bad players. This means the team themselves get to face easier opponents in later rounds and have a better shot at winning the event. Bringing DE to a competitive event sometimes raises eyebrows because people think you're there to pad someone's win stats.

I don't mind it.

It's GW's way of being able to copyright their IP.

They've even said it's the same with 'Astra Militarum' and 'Adeptus Astartes' and 'Adeptus Arbites' etc.

They know they'll still be called 'Imperial Guard' and 'Space Marines' and 'Imperial Judges' etc.

If you still want to call them Dark Eldar instead of Drukhari, then by all means you can.

If you still want to call the Eldar race, Eldar instead of Aeldari, then you can.

Besides, Drukhari, sounds kinda cool anyway..

Exactly. I think GW knew how entrenched their names were in the player base when they changed them exclusively for IP purposes. I definitely agree it could have been worse. Lizardmen -> Seraphon still leaves me scratching my head.

lol! Please tell me the Harlequin nickname thing is real.

I've got the Drew Carey problem with it as well.

I actively like the Harlequin slang idea. I'm pretty sure it's not GW canon though; their output lately has been far too epic for things like slang.

Don't say it as Drew K-air-ee. Say it as Drew K-are-ee.

Drew Carey sounds stupid, I agree. I sincerely hope that wasn't their intended pronunciation, but to me, it doesn't look like it was. It's sort of like the word Khan, which is pronounced "CON", rather than "CAN", where the A has a sort of "ah" sound to it.

Cpt Metal is right.

Enlish works for rules, not for evocative names Wink

Dhru-ka-ri. Strong R like in scottish accent, or like 60% of world languages. dh intended as in "those"

Can't say it's perfect, but i like the up and down harsh flow of this way.

Aeldari loosely means "Eldar before the Fall", which is inclusive of ALL Eldar, including True kin (possibly mostly true kin).

I think Druhkari is not going to be another name for Dark Eldar. Here's why:

Biel-Tan Ruleset is out (check spikeybits), and lists all the models available to the faction.

No Haemonculous Covens

There is also rumors of an Eldar Slaanesh Cult.

I think the slaanesh cult will be the Druhkari, with all its pleasure/pain craving haemonculi and Dark Eldar. 2 different gods made by the eldar. 1 all about sensation and tranditional eldar values, the other about dying. If she who thirsts agrees not to eat my soul, I will uphold the heritage of the True Kin.

This doesn't quite make sense to me, as I agree with Teenageangst that the Dark Eldar would never worship anyone, nor would they make an agreement they did not intend to break very quickly. They would never do anything for anyone else unless they were absolutely certain they had no choice. I remember in the 5th edition codex the mention of the Dark Muses and how they were the figures the dark eldar came close to venerating, but even then it was more like admiration. I read it as the Dark Eldar were in awe of the Dark Muses but didn't make offerings to them or humble themselves before them. That kind of behavior would be anathema to them.

What would fit, however, would be that the many important dark eldar know (and most suspect) the relationship between feeding on suffering and their souls shriveling. And although they will always claim to anyone that they are the way they are because they choose to be, they don't actually have much of choice... but if memory serves that was the status quo anyway right?

The souls of the Ynnari followers live on in the bodies of bystanders that also follow ynnead. And they can even be resurrected.

While I'm all for resurrection, I'm not keen on someone else eating my soul.

Be careful @Tounguekutter, we are really close to a No true Dark Eldar argument here.

https://youtu.be/5zzSqL--d_I

No Dark Eldar worship some god until one does.
Some worship Cegorach, some Shaimesh, some Khaine.
Is not ok to generalize just because it's a fictional race.
