So im browsing FW for purchases and was wondering if anybody has used either the reaper or tantalus in any games.

I could definitely see the tantalus being a good distraction Carnifex for ramming enemy vehicles.

There's a fellow True Kin running around here who has a Tantalus he uses competitively. I'm sure he'll stop in to tell you about it, but it basically revolves around a Court of the Archon I believe, and using it as a gunboat.

Personally I think the Tantalus is too fragile for its points, but that's just me.

The Reaper is nice, but it suffers from One Shot Syndrome. Technically RAW it has a better Haywire table (Pen on a 5-6), but some people choose to play that it just uses normal Haywire. I have had occasion to use one a few times, and it was alright. Not spectacular, but it served its function. In most cases it either but some decent wounds on some low armor shlubs, ticked some hit points off of big vehicles, or kept enemy Land Speeders with flamers Jinking so they couldn't shoot. I can't complain, but they didn't overwhelm me.

Reaper is either awesome and will win you the game or will do nothing at all. Rarely is there a happy medium with this vehicle!

I've never run it in games with a Farseer. I wonder how it would do with rerolls to hit.

Never actually used it, but after reviewing it on Battlescribe I was left with an overwhelming feeling of "meh".

Dont think its very good, too many points and not enough opportunity to use to full effect.

I have a Tantalus. It looks amazing and did pretty well the one time I used it. I used its armour bane ram and pseudo bladevanes to smash one of those chaos flier drop-pod things to pieces which was fun. The 12 disintegrator shots are /nasty/. Terminators died en-masse to its shooting.

I'd filled it with grots who murderised everything in my backfield. I think it's a good unit. AV12 and 5HP is nice, it felt very durable compared to what I'm used to.

However I used it defensively to protect my backfield. There was a lot of big terrain on the board so I was able to screen it from long ranged threats while 12 disintegator shots made a huge impact. I think if you plan to rush it across the board and expose it then you'll just lose it easily. It goes against our MSU archetype and isn't tough enough to take hits to the chin. It can be worth reserving vs some lists. Turning up in later turns can make a huge impact to the backfield as it has good shooting and a powerful ram attack, plus it can carry a beefed up cargo to shock-kill things that have got lost and are in the wrong place.

The overall footprint of the model is pretty big so if you have open boards it can be easily picked off. It's also flashy as hell so people will want to kill it.

Note it has cheap upgrades - 5 point torment launchers are an obvious pickup.

Overall it's not competitive but it's pretty decent if used conservatively.

Tantalus is overpriced for the vehicle itself but I agree it can more than cover its cost when you consider the damage that can be done by delivering a Deathstar.

Where does one find the rules for a Tantalus? Are they in a White Dwarf somewhere?

My tantalus delivers my court reliably and 12 disintegrator shots can actually make its points back. Not including the value of a distraction.

Forge World (where all the best units come from. We only have these 2)

Imperial Armour (the books Forge World puts out with 40k rules in them. Historically only used in Apocalypse games, but these be the times)

My dear eyes, the price!!!
I would have to raid every planet in the sector to get that!

Right I'll just slink back to Low Commorragh and continue plans involving the nice £13 Venoms...

Full disclosure: This hobby is expensive. £300 minimum for a small army and Forgeworld is even more expensive.

I have used the Tantalus to great success. Unfortunately the way I used it is no longer legal. I used to mount 5 Wraith Guard with D Scythes. Once it deep strike in you can be for sure the first unit it hits is going to be HURT. 5 D Flamers. Smile

I have: Killed 3 Riptides in one landing. He was dumb enough to put them all close enough so I could hit all 3 with the Flamer.

However Switching to the Medusa isn't a bad option. Cheaper then mine for sure.

D flamers on a non-superheavy/Lord Of War unit are just dumb. It perplexes me to this day that someone wrote the entry for the Wraithguard and thought "Yep. That seems reasonable!".

Well they got pumped up but used to cause instant death on a 6 was still really good. The D weapon change made them a lot more reliable rather than dramatically more powerful. Frankly, there were very few units who could stand up to them even in 6th ed mode. Obviously they have major tactical weaknesses. I would much rather see a wraith host army than most other options, poison is a nice counter.

I see the Tantalus being an excellent Distraction-Carni (with nightshields and shockprow) rushing into the opposing board to smash into enemy vehicles and keep the focus off ur other units.

Granted it will cost the points that would normally allow for two units of traditional DE, MSU style.

Eh. I think our 55 pt raider works better at the suicide Wraith approach. Same with the medusae bomb. And Distraction-Carnifex.

Its not like you are making use of its transport capacity in either of these cases...

I never tried the tantalus, but what is making me wanting to one day is not the transport capability (even though dropping 7 grots seems very funny!). It's more the 12 dissie shot, combined with the medusa drop. It means you can reliably destroy 2 differents units the turn you drop, since the vehicle can shoot at different unit. If the enemy place a marine squad near a termy squad, you can expect a lot of kill. Every turn the tantalus live after this one would be gravy.

... you may want to run the numbers there. I doubt you would make your points back, except under very specific scenarios.

I mean, if the enemy wants to walk a squad of Termies up the board, you have basically already taken them out of the game (since we are already good at playing the kiting game)

I intend to WWP it so it wouldn't start on the board. Leaving the time to termies to drop in.
