The other thing I missed is their special character having Hit and Run.

As does our dedicated CC character: The Succubus. And she has higher Ini. ^^

I am not looking forward to playing he inevitable Flyrant + Genestealer list.

I'm actually quite glad that the Tyranids finally got some love from GW. They deserved a power boost. I acutally think it will be quite fun to play against the Genestealer Cult because they play so different from other armies. 40K these days is just gunlines that mow each other down and try to grab objectives. On higher skill levels we will see some shenanigans where tanks are used as LOS blockers to hide one's own units from fire etc. The GC however, will lead to some nice cat and mouse games where the Nids will try to surprise the enemy and the other side will try to position its units in such a manner that they aren't caught off guard etc.

I like the strong focus on the character of the army. They are meant as an ambush force and the whole codex is build around that. I really wish that GW would do the same for every other army. Pick a theme and run with it. When we think Orks, we think of green hordes of berserkers with clunky and brutal machinery to back them up. Only to encounter Ini 2 or 3 hordes that get mulched by almost every other close combat unit in the game. GW really needs to focus on what every army is supposed to do and once 8th edition drops they should update the codices accordingly.

Exactly! Give me a strong theme over vanilla marines any day, even if it's not a tier 1 army.

The more I learn about codex GSC the more I think they could be top teir.

Tons of powerful close range units (both shooting and CC) that can just BE wherever they want most of the time, no scatter.

Its like their entire horde army got WWPs for free on a 3+ (or better with formations) and they can use it multiple times + regenerate lost models each time!  Shocked

Have you seen the Miniwargaming battle reports? They are vault-members only so maybe not. Essentially it boils down to this:

1. Yes, the GSC is a quick army but since you are constantly shifting stuff into ongoing reserves your presence and power on the table shifts constantly. And rolling a 1 almost invalidates whole units such as the Aberrants or the Genestealers. Having them come on onto your deployment zone will have them just standing there, doing nothing. Then they have to leave again and hope that they roll something else. By the time they come on a second time it's Turn 2 and if they didn't roll a 6 they can't even charge. So they have to charge Turn 3 which will be slower than if you had deployed them normally and just ran them up the board.

2. Bolters mulch these guys. T3 5+ armour dies to almost everything (as we can testify). And flamers can erase whole squads. Matthew from Miniwargaming lost bitterly to Imperial Fists with bolters and a few combi-flamers.

3.

From what I've seen their shooting sucks. Boltpistols all around and a few nice special weapons. That's not powerful close range shooting. My Skitarii Vanguard has powerful close range shooting, not the Genestealers.

4. The Genestealer Cult's strength is its unpredictable nature and powerful CC units. Their basic troops can kill Terminators because of all those rending attacks. However, this makes it difficult for them to play around objective markers. Sure, they can pop up anywhere to grab an uncontested objective. But since they want to get into CC they'll have to move their stuff away from those points, whilst we can just sit back with our Venoms etc. and still do damage.

I think the GSC is good but it is not top tier. I don't think they'll do too well against double demi company and other top tier formations etc.

No, haven't seen any batreps. Have heard lots of good things from the ITC tournament guys tho.

I'm happy to wait and see. I hope they can shake up the meta a bit.

What is the point of this comment Causalis? Succubi do not have hit and run. Probably should tbfh.

Well a small part of me hope that they did make a toughness 3/4 army with no power armor work in close comba! Then there is a chance that they can make dark elder good in close combat as well!

Agreed. Would be awesome to see something other than Demi Companies or invisible Scatterbikes etc. win some tournaments.

I noticed today that the only model in their codex that has Fear/Fearless is their Patriarch. Wouldn't this make them highly susceptible to a Freakshow list?

They have sources of fearless bubbles, and find it very easy to slam on mastery levels and have access to adamantium will.  This neuters the effectiveness of both soul fright as the actual models gain the fearless usr, and psychic shriek, mirror of minds, and Mind war very difficult to actually cast since they can throw buckets of dice at denying them, and usually are denying on 4's.

Very good point. So I guess I'm back to MSU. Their psychic game is pretty strong.
