Have you ever stopped to wonder why Harlequins travel in packs? In the darkest nights, they remember they are not the apex predator of these twisted pathways... - Ilgaith who Wanders

Some say that of all the thousands upon thousands of Young Kings sacrificed to awaken the Avatar of the Bloody-Handed God...he is the only one to have been found alive. Perhaps this is true. Perhaps something altogether worse...

Our people must be strong to face that which is coming. The weak have no place by our side, lest they be the spear that wavers, the shield that drops, the flank that folds - Message scrawled in blood, discovered atop the Laughing Mount

Remember the true nature of our Gods, cousin. The craftworlders may have cast him as their God of War, but first and foremost...Khaine is God of Murder.

Nice conversion, I like the dynamic pose from "the shard" Smile

Thanks guys! Yeah while on the one hand I dislike AoS for ringing the death-knell for human-scale Empire bits that are dead useful for INQ28 conversions, I can't deny that their character models are both beautiful and dead useful for 40k (much more useful than the monopose regimented models anyway) Smile

As a fellow participant in The Archon's Challenge i have to say he looks very bad.

But actually it is an awesome model, the skin with the blood splatters looks fotorealistic and your choice of colours is outstanding. Cool Very cool!

Haha this wouldn't be the Dark City without at least a little backstabbing Wink

Thanks dude! The blood-spatter is actually dead simple to do. Just get a ballpoint pen, take out the pen bit so you've only got the outer tube, hold a blob of Blood for the Blood God on a brush in front of it and blow through it hard Smile I think it was Count Adhemar on here that told me that little trick!

Update too!

Last one of the dude(tte)s that was just awaiting the final touches for paint Smile

What happens when a Warlock wanders the Outcast Path? Wild psykers. Powerful, in their own way. Lacking finesse, but unfettered access to emotion provides them with a turbulent rawness which can often achieve a similar effect.

Mostly they wander alone. On occasion they find Outcast bands who tolerate their presence, although usually for only a short while. A Hedge-Witch is a valuable resource, but a risky one. Out here, far from the safety of the craftworlds, the gaze of She Who Thirsts rarely falters.

Maegwen liked this band. Perhaps they hadn't learnt better yet, but even being tolerated for longer than was necessary was more than she usually expected. Perhaps she could make a real difference to these people. Perhaps through this she could atone for what she had done, all those years ago.

What did she do? I don't know...but there must be a reason she compulsively paints the bloodied hand of Khaine on her face...

Could it be a coping mechanism related to dealing with loneliness? Perhaps developed while being stranded on an uninhabited island for 4 years because the fed ex plane she was piloting crashed in the south pacific. A habit she is now unable to cast away?

Alright to start with your Pheonix Lord Conversion... I love him. The wings look absolutley fantastic (and I hate to say that because I miss human scale empire bits too... they were historically accurate ;( ) the entire conversion looks fantastic I really can't say much more unfortunately.

As for the Deserter I do like him, he has a simple look to him but it just works. The fluff was what really set the tone for the char on an unrelated note xD

As for your Cultist of Khaine... I absolutely love his color scheme (as you can probably tell from my log I'm fumbling around trying to get something simmilar) but onto the conversion he looks elegant and dynamic, but positively brutal as well.

Your Warlock is great (as expected with your standard) and I must say your Ynnari really have a thing for an outstretched hand. Your prophet and Warlock both have a hand out.
The ragged clothing from the Wood elves works really well here as I know your going for a more ragged look for your Ynnari, and the way you painted the bloody hand on her helmet is awesome (and sounds like an absolute pain to try to pull off)

As for Wilson you could always have the Cat be playing with a Wilson Ball Razz

Thanks dude! Yeah I'm dead chuffed with Ilgaith's fluff. There's a little more coming when I get my Craftworlders painted to explain a little more about his motivations and what 'Warborn' are...unless you remember from earlier in the plog Wink

The paint on the Young King actually came directly from our conversation about how you could do yours Smile I thought 'I'm saying drybrush silver over black, but I don't think I've ever done it myself' so I tested it out myself Smile it's a definite way of getting really nice streaked/darkened/blackened metal, but straight silver with a wash is definitely the easier way to do it.

Not that it actually matters that much whether you get the drybrushing technique right. One of the main things that makes it look good is specifically because the drybrushing isn't uniform and winds up patchy/streaky, so absolutely give it a go Smile

I have noticed I love an outstretched hand too Wink either open-palmed (Hedge-Witch,, Corsair Prince, Thaegr) or pointing (Prophet, Blind Cultist, Succubus). There's even more of it if you look at my non-Eldar dudes :S

I thought I'd share the Corsairs I knocked together a while ago since they're relatively low on the painting list :S

These were mainly an exercise in just seeing what bits and pieces I could throw together and to see what looked cool for future endeavours, but there's a couple of ideas I've been thinking based on them.

Basically, these guys are a little more 'low-rent' than the Khaine's Ravens. While the latter are a veritable shadow-empire, these 5 are just a band of vagabonds scratching a living as mercenaries and guns-for-hire.

Felarch:

Wrack/Avenger

War-witch (I'm thinking she's a Wych who showed latent psychic powers, and only just managed to escape Commorragh with her life)

The Lovers (One thought I had is that when Eldar pair together they develop a deepening psychic bond, one effect of which is that they begin unconsciously mirroring each other's actions)

The whole gang

All creatures great and small,
The Plague God made them all.

- Ancient Albian Proverb, popular among legionnaires of the XIV

We assume it must have been human once...

You will find, dearest friend, that all beings have their place in the universe. Naturally, humanity's is below ours. Is not the fact that we do not seek your extermination not proof of our benevolence?

Made up four more dude(tte)s for my Outcast warband Smile the survivors of those who followed Ilgaith into exile.

You…you have a child? Out here?

Many of us have. We live out here, with all that entails. Quite frankly, what choice did we have?

Where Ilgaith goes, we follow. It's not as if we could return without something to barter our freedom for anyway. I've heard what the Angvai do to deserters...

One of the things these guys have let me do is scratch an itch that I've been feeling for a while. It's a bit of a trope in war-settings that the worlds are completely devoid of children. Things usually take a step towards the gritty and the realistic if they do include them, which seems right up the INQ28-style street Smile

It also gives a valuable little glimpse that the galaxy might not be 'only war'. Interwoven with the warfare and strife are countless billions of families just trying to survive in a wartorn dystopian future.

For these eldar it's especially poignant as eldar children are so few and far between. Discovering you're with child when you're a vat-born clone with a slim chance of survival would be a bedrock-solid reason to desert. Also, it's a little suggestion that there might be more to Outcasts than just eldar deciding they want a gap-year from the Path system. There are eldar living outside the safety of the craftworlds or Commorragh (through choice or necessity), surviving against the odds Smile

"No," the figure explained patiently, "you misunderstand. I hold no formal title. There is no governance or rulership among us Outcasts. 'The Nomad Prince' is little more than an epithet. Still, I suppose I am as close to a figurehead for my people as we have, if only due to provenance."

I hear that his house were once exodites, fleeing the Old Empire.

I hear they became lost along the way. Not physically lost, but 'lost' as a state of mind. They have been wandering ever since.

The Nomad Prince? Vainglorious navel-gazer. Does little more than tempt away the young and naive with fabulous myths of exploration. There is nought but a lonely death awaiting the Eldar out among the stars. I half expect that come the Rhana Dandra he'd spend his time philosophising rather than pick up his spear to fight.

Have you never stopped to wonder about this place? Why this particular reach of the webway is filled with sand? It's not sand, cousin, it's glass. You stand amid the ruins of Karaehe, the great glittering city. Miles upon miles of transparent towers, wondrous to behold. Shattered and ground to dust by the fell energies of the Fall.

You can still find bones in the sand, if you look.

Oh, and something I forgot to mention. Since the Croneworlder one winged Vampire-Lord guy I've been looking to Fantasy for characters to mirror in the 40k universe, with a suitable grimdark twist. A lot of named characters in Fantasy have been changed into generic up-spec characters in the jump to AoS. This guy is based on the Fantasy Araloth, who in AoS has been turned into a character called a 'Nomad Prince'.

I've used bits of his kit in my Nomad Prince, and tried to mirror the pose with more Eldar bits as well. He's also called 'Araloth of the hooked Blade', so I thought it would be fitting to replace his eagle with the hooked claw I had spare from the Tenebrael Shard kit (especially as it mimicked the pose).

Lastly, the background for Araloth is that he was a bit of a coward until he came across an elf maiden being assaulted by a Slaaneshi daemon. He slew the daemon, and the maiden revealed herself as Lileath, stating she had a plan for him. Since then, he's been the bravest and most untiring champion of the wood elves.

In the universe of 40k...Lileath is dead. The Nomad Prince never had his pivotal moment. A lifetime of wandering as an outcast has expunged his cowardice by necessity, but he never developed the untiring desire to fight for his people. He simply wanders his own path through the ashes of his civilisation, earning the disdain of the warlike Angvai (who are quoted above).

Well, I spent this weekend doing a bit of a redux of all my old models Smile after the weathering on my Outcasts, everyone else was looking a little...pristine which just won't do. It'll probably be completely unnoticeable in pictures, but they look much improved in the wraithbone, so to speak Wink

Warning, this will probably be a bit image-heavy...

I also found some time to go and do a little touch-up on my Corsairs. Again, probably not really noticeable but a little weathering on the reds and golds, some deeper washes on the coats and some drybrushing and a heavy nuln oil wash on the feathers.

My two squads of Reavers are up next for a little weathering then my Malevolents, and there's another two squads, another Baron and 5 Balestrikes awaiting paint. If they don't have rules as of 8th I don't really care. The 7th Corsair codex was a masterpiece, so I'll just keep going on as if it's coming back...

I also had the idea to try the technique for weathering (basically the same as a rough drybrushed edge-highlight, but using a darker colour rather than a lighter one, and working upwards) with Blood for the Blood God on my Dark Eldar. I was originally thinking that it might be too much blood...but then I thought this is the Dark Eldar we're talking about. 'Too much blood' probably doesn't register anywhere near their concerns...

Last, but by no means least, are my exodites Smile again, just a little weathering to make the bone look a little older and the cloth a little dirtier. Reminded me just how damn proud of these I am Smile it's also given me a little inspiration of how to move forward with these guys as a warband a little, so expect a couple more updates in future!

Haha I think it feels like it because I make such a song and dance about each model Wink counting them all up I've got 53 models I'd count as 'done'.

Not even half a Guard army or Ork horde, not even counting the vehicles Wink

Saying that, if I'm making an accomplished painted such as yourself feel even the least bit jealous I must be doing something right Wink

Thanks Squidmaster Smile glad you like him.

The original idea for him is as a Reaver Jetbike. Fast, close-combat oriented and big claws explain the Hammer of Wrath. However, I did find out that it's a fantastically expensive way of making Reavers. Three Spite-Revenants went into making him at a cost of £10.80 per Reaver at boxed-set prices :S very glad you can get stuff from bits shops!

Also, last update from the spate of hobbying I did on the weekend. Improved Thaegr with the same trick I used on the Hedge-Witch Maegwen of replacing the Glade Guard lower legs with Guardian legs to get him the proper height. It's also had the happy coincidence of fixing his pose slightly. Previously from some angles it looked like he was overbalancing and about to fall backwards, but not any more Smile

Sadly, it's also come along with a demotion. He's no longer an Exodite Lord, but a warrior in Raodruin's retinue. However, that's freed me up somewhat to do some more exodite warriors to a similar level as him so expect some soon Smile

Thaegr, Flutterkin, Son of Kurnous. Hound of the Hunt.

The great horned xeno looked down upon the emperor's faithful. Its form looked familiar enough to pass for human under the vastly expanded meaning used in the 41st millennium. It was the eyes that gave it away. No human had eyes like that. Staring into them, the guard realised just how alien the Eldar truly were.

"Long have we tolerated your presence in this place," the merciless creature toned. "Hunting your kind has proved remarkably enjoyable sport through the years. However, yet again your ignorance has provided the conduit for the Plaguefather to access our worlds. Regrettably, our sport must come to an end. Your presence here has outlived its entertainment."

I've also come up with a little fluff for Raodruin, playing on the idea of him being a Soul Drinker (a forgotten Eldar practice of consuming the souls of murder victims to replenish your vitality and increase your power), and a little of the ideas I've had for what precisely happens when you murder a race's warp-gods.

With no small amount of difficulty these days, Raodruin called up one of the souls of his victims from the hazy miasma swirling within him. Old, clouded, befuddled thing. One of his earliest hunts. Before the Fall, even. From what his own ruminating thought processes could decipher, the ancient murdered soul had once been somewhat of an expert in the matters of warp-Gods. Not that its word could be trusted. It was older than he was, and had experienced the slow gradual decline into general confusion that afflicted all stored souls of the Eldar.

From what he could understand of the incoherant ramblings, the hooks that bound warp-Gods to their mortals appeared to travel in both directions. Warp-Gods were reflections of the beings which created them, but they also embodied aspects of them. Remove one, and the hooks would leave ragged wounds in the consciousness of a race. They knew. Apparently the Eldar had tried it a few times on some of the vermin-species. It was amusing, in a way. Like breaking a wheel off a clockwork toy so it could only spin in circles.

Raodruin thought he could hazily remember himself, if remember was even the right word. He wasn't sure how many of his memories were his own and how many were the accreted thoughts of his victims bleeding through into his consciousness. The moment his Gods died, so had parts of his soul and the soul of every other Eldar in perpetuity. It had been horrendously painful on a level only a soul could feel. Yet, it was impossible to quantify what had been lost. In what way they were broken. Conspicuous only in its comparative absence. It was as if you were a spider, and some higher being had removed all but three of your legs. You hadn't the capacity to understand what had happened, nor the slightest possibility of regaining what was lost. All you knew is that you were struggling to escape, unstable and skittering desperately away. That's what the Eldar were now. Three-legged spiders scrabbling around among the other insects of the galaxy. There were Eldar for generations who had never even known they were missing something. Never known what might and majesty their collective soul was lacking.

Ynnead, however, proved intriguing. Could it be possible to replace what most could not see was missing? Did Raodruin even want whatever this...dead god...offered to plug the gap? Provided that was even the mechanism by which it functioned. On that matter the poor faded soul was no use whatsoever. Either that or he wasn't able to comprehend what it was saying with his own addled mind.
