PostSubject: Harlequin allies?   Mon Feb 08 2016, 06:29

Hello all,

So I got my tax refund back and I was thinking of "maybe" making an order for Harlequins.

Firstly, I really know NOTHING about how they play other than a tid bit I've read here and there. They look soooo cool though.

What would you guys suggest as a starting off allied force?

Obviously, I'd buy the Codex and then, what else?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
Raz

troupe, death jester, shadow seer, and solitaire. They do well in a fear bomb list or just taking a heroes path formation.

Are their vehicles worth taking?

I've heard they are pretty expensive and I remember reading the rules when they first came out, but it's kind of fuzzy.

Starweavers aren't bad. Voidweavers I dislike intensely but GW really want you to buy them as they're mandatory in a lot of the formations.

Would you suggest buying the kit with both vehicles, a box of troops (should i get two?), Death Jester, and Solitare?

How are the Shadowseers? Having a psychic phase is kind of incising to me. Do their spells synergize well with DE?

Xm0shcryptX suggested a good starting place for Harlequins and you could easily add a Starweaver into that. It would enable you to field a Cast of Players or Heroes' Path formation, which are probably the best ones if you just want to add a few Harlequins to a DE list.

Shadowseers are excellent and I would say almost essential to the 'Quins playstyle as they add some much needed defence to the 'Quins pretty impressive offence.

Thank you all for the advice.

Is one box of Troupes enough to start out with?

I'm basically just looking for a fun little force to add some flavor to some of my games. CWE crossed my mind, but everyone is doing that and I just love the way the 'Quins look (and my buddy offered to paint them for me, 'cause he's awesome).

My friends are pretty lax but they are very competitive so it's not all just for fun and giggles, but I think I could have a blast fielding them.

I'd say so, yes. The problem with the Harlequin book is that most of the formations and the unique detachment require a pretty significant Harlequin force, as in 700+ points. The lack of an HQ choice makes it impossible to just take, say, an allied detachment or barebones CAD so your options are limited to either very small or very large forces with pre-set choices of units.

Sounds good, Count

Thanks again,

Oh, sorry! One last question....

How are the Skyweavers? They look cool but if memory serves me correctly, they're quit overpriced?

You summed up the issue with Skyweavers. They pay a hefty premium for the ability to both shoot and assault well but end up being too expensive to use. Drop them by about 10 ppm and they would probably be worthwhile.

Yeah one of each character, 2 troup boxes and a vehicle sound like a good investment

I basically just bought a full Detachment to make all possible formations (and a few extra shadowseers)

I used standart masque with three aditional shadowseers. All lvl2 and one has Mask of secrets.
Work very well with DE, as you can take webway portal, raiders for clowns and armor of misery.

Works well when you need some Ld modifications (-4 is good for those psy-shrieks)
And Phantasmancy is not bad at all.
So you definetly should take shadowseers.
And probably three boxes of starweavers. Two for skayweavers as fast attack slot and one for voidweaver. If you want to create your own masque ofcource

I am going to disagree with the majority of players and say the seers and jesters (and even the solitaire) are all traps!

I find them all average at best...

I prefer running my Quins in what I call Weaver Spam - as many vehicles and bikes as possible with the infantry being support...

Solitaire is pretty strange one. Agreed. T3 makes him realy unstable on battlefield. He can stand before migthiest foe turn after turn, but than a couple of chaos cultists kills him easy.

Jesters are fun, bun not nessessary.

Shadowseers are realy good. Fact.

Starweaver spam is also an option. I don`t argue with that.

Shadowseers are ok. That's about it for the price you pay for that psyker (even at lvl 2) is high given the statline and limited options and power access

I'm probably biased as I tend to play Freakshow lists when I use 'Quins but I find Seers to be very useful indeed.

It could definitely be a meta driven thing - I always find the maledictions fail on important targets who are almost universally a higher mastery and they deny on 4+

I tend to use them to cast as many Psychic Shrieks as possible. With the Ld penalties in Freakshows they can decimate units but it's probably best not to waste that 'firepower' on targets with a decent chance of denying you.

I use harlies as allies though i prefer using the faochus blade detachment for the jetbikes and voidweaver. Also if your strapped for cash, build the star/void weaver as a void weaver and magnitise the weapons ((don't really need to magnetise as they fit snug) and then you can use them as either vehicle

I have started using the Heroes Path formation as my Harliquin Allies in my Dark Eldar and I think they have been a great introduction to how the Harliquins fit into my army. Each character has their own weaknesses but generally at least one of them performs well each game.

I have also been toying with trying out the Cast of Players formation which sounds like it could fit nicely into a Dark Eldar army

I've decided to delay my order by one week. I've been spending a bit recklessly this week but on my next paycheck I'm going to make an order for the models. I appreciate all the discussion and it's given me a lot to think about.

I think I'm going to start off with the initial suggestion of the three Characters, a box of Troupes, and probably one vehicle. If I like them as much as I think I will, I will buy a few more things down the road. I'm not the worlds best painter so I'm a bit nervous to try my hand on some of these but my buddy who is quit good should be able to help me out quit a bit.

I'd start with Cast of Players formation put them in a Raider with a WWP Archon and go for funny -4 -6 leadeship equipment. Psychic Shriek, Death Jesters death is not enough, Soulfright stuff. That can be an interesting unit.

Couple of melta pistols wont hurt either - precise delivery of melta at the back armor.

They are a workable deathstar but a very squishy one. They also cant be both cheap and effective. Lot of their upgrades cost points, but not taking them denies them purpose.
