PostSubject: Malevolent Space Fascists!   Wed Jan 20 2016, 15:33

Hi! I'm new here though I've been lurking for a while. Just wanted to fire up a little blog to help motivate me to get stuff done and not trail off like I use to. I'm not aiming for a huge 2000pts army but something rather small, and on a budget. That said, there's going to be a few models that either are heavily converted or sculpted from scratch, which brings me to my first WIP-pic:
" />

The plan is to use ut as a talos, but I wanted to ask you guys if you think it's 'talosy' enough or if it is better suited as a chronos? The model itself is converted from an old jedbike, with a bunch of grey stuff stuck on. I have a few of those lying around so next up on the conversion table will be a chronos (with less of the arachnid-theme and more of a tentacle monster vibe). A lot of the models will be converted old models I think unless I win the lottery, though a venom or two would be nice...

What do you guys think?

That actually looks really nice! A really like it.

Looking at it, I don;t see any reason it couldn;t be a Chronos or Talos. My usual tactic is to build generic "Pain Engines" and then make sure to identify what I'm using them as in each game.

On this model, kudos again, looks lovely, but I would suggest using some putty to fill in the gap between the topd spike and the Reaver canopy. Just fill in the gap and smooth it out to look natural.
Otherwise, nice.

Also, seeing as this is your first post, welcome!

This is a cool idea and looks really good. I think the whole biomech angle for DE could be a lot more disturbing/disgusting than the current canon designs. To me, this has more of a Cronos vibe, but I think thats due to it reminding me of the weird little immortality insect (conceptually rather than visually) from the movie 'Cronos'.

Thanks! Smile
I have been looking through your log a couple of times and I have to say there are a fair bit of really original takes on DE that I really like. I think it was your venoms that I thought were brilliant not only in execution but also in concept.

As you say, building generic pain engines also opens up more possibilities because you don't have to make a certain build of this and that. In game it might be a bit confusing for opponents to keep track of everything but I often feel that the converting and painting part of the hobby is the most important (I don't game infact. Last game was in 3rd ed!!!).

Got a bit of filling done but need to blend it in a bit more:
" />

And also got a bit of work done on the 'chronos' (you can see all the spiky tentacle/teeth parts that will be added later in the packground):
" />

@eohall: Thanks! Agree completely on the bio/mech theme... The GW-models kind of feels like they are basically human (human shaped head/two arms/spine)... I imagine that the DE flesh-wizards would be a bit more imaginative with their creations (although the current talos/chronos are great models! Just don't have the cash!).

Hey thanks! These are the first models I've build using grey stuff and I gotta say, I really like working with this compared to the old green...

Next bunch of "pretty much done sculpting"-pics

Still have to do some kind of weapon thingy on the talos to count as twin linked cannons, but the chronos I'm pretty content with. Wierd and nasty!

Ok, that's amazing. Insectile, parasitic, menacing. I need to learn to sculpt. The old bike bits are well-used here too!

Hey, thanks! really happy with this sculpt!

Pretty much finished the chronos now, though I might do some minor touch ups on it (the mouth in particular!). Kind of digging how it turned out. Particularly the skin with all the different colours blending into each other. Really enjoyed painting it, but I might have rushed it a bit...

Also throwing in a picture of my kabalites that I painted a while ago. Two still left to paint

Got the talos painted up! Judging by its black/pink legs I think "Raspberry-Liquorice" is a fitting name! The colours didn't turn out to well in the photo, they are a lot more vivid IRL... to be honest I was afraid it would turn out slightly boring-looking (I think it is a bit less imaginative a sculpt than the chronos), but working up the contrast on the skin added alot of life into the model. The blue/green combo on the weapon and crystal-parts also contrast the purple/red very well (to my surpised relief!). C&C very welcome!

Oh wow, thanks! Very Happy You are all too kind!

I've always worked with very diluted paints but this is the first time I've really tried to blend different colours and hues together. Very pleased with these results Smile. Speaking of which; here's a WIP of my old school archon (gotta love the old archon models! So over the top! Have the skin mask one as well... Should do some wierd convertion on him. Maybe into a haemonculus...)
" />
" />

These DE are also the first time I've tried OSL... turns out okay I guess, but to my defence, it's really really hard!

C&C very welcome!

Also realized the thread name is very similar to a forum members name, might have to change it

Your Pain Engines are horrific, in the best possible way! I like the painting, too.

This is the painter telling me he's hesitant to give me advice! Insane blends, masterful use of color. Very alien and yet very pleasing. A treat for the eye

Wow really phenomenal stuff man. The blending and color choices are superb. I love your pain engine as well... totally grotesque which is perfect. Any idea what type of army you are gonna build? Are you going to go with a classic mix, or specific theme? Anyway great stuff man keep it up!

Hey thanks! Glad you guys like it!

Ok, credit where credit is due. The colour scheme is heavily influenced by the eventide estates DE log on warseer, only mina are a tad bit brighter and not so "orange-y"... Can't seem to access that site now, but I recommend anyone interested to take a peek whenever in need of inspiration painting-wise!

@Cavalier: I'm a bit of a fan of the coven theme, so I might steer in that direction. Have three grotesques planned out. Going for some kind of fleshy tentacly ghost vibe for them. Also working on a sculpt for a haemonculus, and might also convert one out of one of those old Dark Elf sorceresses (with the big ass hat and skull staff!). That said, I'll try to convert and repaint old stuff first hand. Have six old incubi up for a paint stripp that also might get some kind of conversion or sculpt. There are a couple of I'd like to get my hands on eventually though. Some scourges (fantastic models!) and a venom or two to begin with. After that maybe some more kabalites for a squad of warriors and trueborn.

Haven't got the current codex so I'm just going off of what appears to be good choices judging by the more common army lists on this forum...

@eohall: Thanks! Smile I have to say, you really are quite the accomplished painter, both in tecnique and colour choice! Maybe I should give myself more credit, but often times it feels like I'm just going along haphazardly trying things out to see what works... It really did work out for the archon though!

Alot of things going on at the moment, last term exams and so on. Not dead yet but almost... Still managed to get some time to mess around with my old DE-stuff! Hacked apart my old raider and warriors. Gonna try to make some wyches out of the warriors and spare parts I think. Too bad wyches suck now...
" />
What do you guys think of this conversion? Should I extend the "sail" with plasticard? What shape to make?

Also: Wyches! Aiming for a blend of the 3rd ed look and the 5th ed. Have some old wyches left and had plans to buy some new ones and mix them up

Ok sharing some wips with you guys, need some advice... I tried my luck with some freehand on the sail of the raider but I think it looks kind of out of place... Should I try to get some more patterns on there or leave it as is? What do you think? Also went for a brighter colour scheme over all. It's the wyches raider and they will be more colour full as well

I'm not quite sold on the sail yet, but I think it's beautiful. The colours flow really well into one another. It's like a sleek, flying rainbow.

As for the freehand, I believe it looks good as it is. If you took it out it would be a little bland, with so much empty coloured space, and if you added any more it would be a bit cluttered.

I really like the energy and height that your latest Wych/Succubus has, it's stunning, but I think the weapon is too bulky for her. If it had only half the thickness, but retain most of the length, I'd be a fan. Perhaps once it has colour, I could see more merit in it's current design.

Hey thanks, definitely see what you mean with the thickness of the blade. I think I was a little bit too impatient to cut it down a notch... Think I will proxy it as a glave or something. More or less finished now, but might try to get some work done on the sword as you suggested.
" />
" />

And regarding the sail, the rainbow comment is high praise to me! Always been a fan of bright colours. Actually did some more freehand before your reply (did I say I am impatient Smile) and what do you know, it does look a bit cluttered! Might have to blend it in with some of the middle tone colour.

Love the warriors and talos/cronos, really beautiful painting there and a very nice cool colour scheme.

The rainbow raider is a little too colourful for my tastes (says the guy with a grey army... Wink), but is brilliantly executed. The red prow makes it look significantly warmer (palette-wise) than the rest of the army. Would you consider repeating that red through the wyches that ride it, say in their weapons and tips of their hair as well as the highlights on their armour? You might be able to evoke the sense that that element of your army is more hot-headed and immediately dangerous relative to the cooler Kabal and Coven elements, and subconsciously draw your opponent's focus to them... also the wyches have so much exposed skin, which is itself warm, that the red might help sell them.

Well, just an idea, anyway. Smile
