PostSubject: Troop/Upgrade costs datasheet   Tue Oct 27 2015, 13:41

Hello all,

I have been lurking for a few weeks. I have been amassing my army and reading the rules/codex, trying to glean as much as I can before I start asking too many questions/contributing.

One thing that strikes me about the codex is the lack of quick reference for point values. I would think that the cost of units and upgrades would have a quick reference chart.

I plan to make my own, but I figured I would ask first to see if anyone has already done this. No reason to recreate the wheel.

There is the army builder. Stuff like battle scribe.

I am just looking for a list of each cost basically so I can create a list on the go when if I go to a friends how. Mix and match stuff on the fly quickly without having to thumb through pages.

Edited.

Battle scribe will work for me. A quick reference sheet would still be nice, but I will make due.

Moving this to DE Discussion, as it is not an announcement. Gob.

Yeah, GW tends to prevent stuff like that by being very lawyer happy.
There is basically a rule on this and every other Warhammer site about not posting point costs because GW has, in the past, come after websites that did anything that would get people to think they didn't need to buy the rulebook (even though they claim they are a model company and that only 20% of their customers play the game Wink )

But, yeah, the army building softwares are probably the closest thing out there to what you're looking for.

Ah okay. Ya... GW is pretty ridiculous. I will just make my own. I downloaded battlescribe which will help make the armies in advance but in a pinch I would prefer quick reference sheets. If I want to swap 1 or two things I would rather see it all in one spot as opposed to scrolling. Too many drop down menus in the app.

Thank you for the replies.

Print your battlescribe list then once you're happy?

Ya, it is just my style of learning and managing something. I can understand/quickly make changes if I have it all in front of me in a nice organized sheet. OCD? You betcha.

In this case - no they are not being ridiculous

Intellectual property must be protected and policed or risk losing the IP. By allowing sites to list full points values and copies of the rules they are encouraging piracy and risk all kinds of legal issues

Battle Scribe is nice.

I think someone else mentioned an Excel sheet (or a Google Docs sheet). You can easily set up areas for functions, have units and costs organized in the doc and copy / paste into a column for quick point calculations. I use that sometimes when at work and I want something a bit bigger to work on than my phone.

For all German-speaking people there's also always onlinecodex.de, a fantastic, well, online codex. Smile

No need to be snide.

What you are asking for seems to be massive double handling. Battlescribe does it on the fly - you can even save units you like to make them easier - put your models in the program as units and drop them in and out as you please.

Making another spreadsheet with all the points values for everything on it seems like more work for little - if any - gain over using the book or battlescribe

The only advantage I find with a spreadsheet is if you have google docs, you can always get to it (same applies to any other program, really). If you're not too sure what you want you can set up a bunch of "template groups" (units that I often take) that you can swap in and out of your actual list column if needed. For example, I'll have like DA w/ gear, Loaded gunboat units, five man units with blaster in venoms, my favorite character builds and I can just cut / copy / paste.

To each their own, though

Ya, I see the benefit of battlescribe but it is not end all be all. The speed bump and miscommunication I am seeing here is the determined outcome.

I am not a tournament player, I am a VERY casual player and have more fun mixing and matching random units rather than trying to create the most super-uber-elite-I-will-win-no-matter-what army. I do not play frequently, and may only play 2 or 3 times a year if that.

By having a spread sheet I can visually see and quickly do the math of unit costs "Meh, lets take out some warriors with this weapon and throw in some wyches with that weapon". I prefer less set up when I am on site to play. Once I am there, lets get the game going asap.

Battle scribe takes longer to do this, although it is definitely very polished and awesome to create a well balanced list.
