PostSubject: Ork Player Syndrome   Wed Oct 21 2015, 07:39

Before I begin, this is a bit of a rant, but also hopefully a way to get some insight on how to deal with some things.

Me as a 40k player, I'm semi-new, I don't have a ton of games under my belt, but I know how the game goes, turn, everything about playing basically, I have good enough sportsmanship and respect that I will almost make my units move less or snub their firing range before I'd even consider moving them an inch higher or say they are withing firing range when its a bit of a toss up.

At my store there is only a small player base, There is me, with Dark Eldar, and a CSM army that I need to paint before I will even plan on using them, a space marine and eldar player who has 20+ years under his belt, and is a very fair player, theres a Necron player, who is also very fair, a Tyranid player, who is quite fair, a space marine player who is quite fair, but strict, and a tau player who is fair. There are two ork players who to say the least really irritate me, the first who I played a good while back, would move his units at least another 2 inches above what they had, and wouldn't notice charging through difficult terrain unless someone calls it, just an annoyance to battle in general.

This next ork player whom I played today, which bear in mind, was a tournament game, this was week 2 of this 6 week tournament, considering its at the store, we don't have a rep of GW to sit in on and critique moves or anything of the sort, was basically the same as the other ork player, except that he's very new and not all too intelligent on whats going on in game. All his movements included higher moves than normal, he would deal his phases awry, moving then running before his other units moved, which when I would mention, I'd kindly allow him to fix his mistakes, but in general apart from the annoyance of him moving his units in such a way, he would also be doing shady things in general, when I would walk over a table away to take a drink, I'd notice he would be almost like changing a dice roll he would do when I was on my way back, during my shooting phase, my venoms would eat a few of his boyz in a squad up, I'd call the wounds he'd roll armor, and when he would pull his dead units out, he would 'accidentally' knock his guys over, and would restack them, so that the guy with the heavy weapon is the one not getting killed, even though he was easily the closest, on top of that, because of some mishap in the assault phase, that HE made the mistake in, I lost my Archon and a objective because of it, I began the assault, was in base contact with ONLY the Nob squad leader with a power Klaw, the kid says 'I'll pile in." even though I said its not your initiative step, so when that went down, I got a Huskblade instant kill on his Nob, I pull his nob, and hand it to him, and sure enough he says no that guy wasn't the closest, the other ork player chimes in, and now I'm assumed wrong, and because of this, of course my archon got killed by the power klaw. This was very frustrating because I made my alligator blood show when I took the chance of my Archon killing the only threat, and then finishing a squad and capturing a marker, great victory points I would of earned in a single turn.

Due to issues like that, I did fail and lose the mission, I had to table him to of won, and I didn't.

I just have to say how would I confront issues like that when I play him next? I am not a very confrontational person, given that I'm also with a emo type of look, I have tattoo's and piercings, I feel like if I did it in a bad way, given my looks I wouldn't want the store deeming me as bullying or whatever, I want to keep relationships in the store nice because there's not a ton of us, and I feel if I confront him on the spot when he would do issues like that I'd be nervous it'd come across wrong.

I don't mind losing in a legit game, because even at the end I can still take some gratitude that I had some nice key points I scored, in a game where I lost because of what I'd say as almost cheating, I can't help but wonder how it would of played out otherwise, and the fact that its a tournament setting makes me annoyed to sign my name saying yes I lost by this many points.

Some guys, man, this is all they have. They have really poor social skills and a loss of anything that means everything to them causes massive anxiety. They are awful to play against and unfortunately will probably find themselves on the fringe of any gaming group they try and join.

What this needs is an unbiased 3rd party watching. When I was TO I had to deal with a guy that pulled these shenanigans. Warning, point deduction threat and then disqualification from event are the steps to have in place. Take it to the TO.

Yeah, its just ridiculous, like, I shouldn't feel like I need to sit and inspect every aspect of his turn, and call him on things just for him to do it, a nice fun casual game, instead of some stressful, overly focused and a generally awful game. It doesn't help that not only him, but the other ork player do not have their units painted. What do you mean TO? I don't know the abbreviation. Mad

Whilst the other guy was wrong, it was a bit of a self-inflicted wound because you allowed him to do it. Telling him he can't pile in until his initiative step is pointless if you then allow him to do it anyway.

Well when it was him, and the other ork player vouching for him, and making it seem like it wasn't a big deal, I didn't want to make an overly big deal about it, but I do realize I should have.

Ask another player to watch over your game. That's the only thing possible. Tell him beforehand that this guy likes to pull those things off, if you are nice you can say that it's due to a lack of knowledge.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what they rely on.

I think you have to either be prepared to call them out on stuff like this (and, if they don't back down, check the rules in a rulebook or with the TO), or else bring someone who knows the rules well and will be able to spot that kind of thing and speak up on your behalf with more authority.

Don't you have a friend that can watch over the game? He doesn't have to be there as a referee. At least officially.

Yeah you guys are right, unfortunately this game the spectator was the other Ork player, which obviously made it a bit biased, I suppose I'll have to call them on it as casually as I can.

In Germany we say "Du hast dein Lehrgeld bezahlt."
You now have your lesson learned. That won't happen again. Maybe ask the other players if they experience something similar.

Yeah the person who normally gives me rides to and from the store had the spectating ork player pulling fast ones on him in his game. He called him on it

Get that guy watching your games and you watch his games. It's more fun that way too.

I find nothing more annoying than spectators jumping in to try and correct me or my opponent. If you need backup, don't hesitate to ask someone else to support you on a rules call, but if your game needs a dedicated referee, you might want to just try to find other options.

I dunno I think having a full time referee is AWESOME, and am absolutely for spectators, but I do agree that if you find yourself needing one, you may want to consider playing other people.

I often correct people. The number of times I've said "that's twin linked" or "strafing run makes you bs5 against ground" it's shocking, and I don't even play those armies.

Only one guy seems to not like it and I dont know him all that well but he brought the new forgeworld super suit to a tourney when he found out he could bring one LoW so I guess I don't care about his feelings lol

I'm on the side that only likes quiet spectators. They can comment on some cool tactics or awful dice rules, but otherwise, keep quiet. If I'm playing someone, and we come across a situation where I feel he is cheating, I call him out on it. If he refuses to change, I respectfully finish the game and then NEVER play him again. And when he asks why, I tell him he's a cheater and not fun to play against. Then I talk bad about him behind his back, cause that's the dark eldar way Wink

For the most part, the friend of mine who takes me to and from, who is in his 50's, kind of awkward since I'm 21, ha, but he has the 20+ years experience, and as a spectator he is very, very good. He doesn't talk into it too much, but will be fair both ways too, not to mention I like a few spectators, as long as they aren't breathing down my neck, but this circumstance, he wasn't there, I just hate it when I feel like I need to walk and critique every bit of my opponents moves, I'd rather play against someone with some values and respect that wouldn't be trying to pull fast ones, the fact that its a tournament makes me even more upset, not so much about the reward the winner gets, but the fact that I signed my name confirming, that I 'lost' is the worst. Again its my bad, but I do think I will be calling people out from now on, if people want to boot me from the group for being a good bit of strict then so be it.

You only need to call out people that deserve it. So those that don't deserve it get a nice harmonic match.

I will be, it might be a bit before I do, If I even do, the tournament brackets might have me done with the ork players, except for the original one, who is just as bad, but 10x more annoying, as he likes to try and explain of how my unit died.

"The Warboss just wanted to be the Archons friend, thats why he patted him on the shoulder with his Power Klaw and killed him."

But I digress I don't wanna be too negative. XD

That way you should do it too:

The Archon wanted the Ork as a friend. That's why he drugged him and dragged him to Commorragh as a pet slave.

Well yeah, I suppose I could, its just the way the army lists are, my record against Orks is not great, that being said, the only two ork players are the sketchy games, but yeah. Hahah Razz
