PostSubject: Advices over an atypical mission   Thu Sep 03 2015, 08:18

Ok guys. My fluffy GM (the one i had battled last time) call another game in his fluffy campaign.
This time i will battle marines (the ones with FNP 6+) and i know a more or less how beat 'em (advices always useful they are however- Yoda).

This time is the kind of scenery that is very new for me. It's called "round defense" and comes from i think a book of the 6'ed i believe. The marines deploy circular in a circle of 18" around an objective. Who control the objective take 3 point, and they are only king slayer and first blood, so if you got the primary you'll win, if contested go to points.

I fear this game mostly because I've to go to marines, they are stood still and compact, and I've no way to make 'em move or flank them. I reputee this mission a bloodbath for me and i slightly suspect that is a sort of punishment for me from GM.
However, the SM guy is the top in our tournament now, so if i beat him i go straight to the top with 2 win / 0 lose.

I would go with our solid melee options, as he cannot avoid you if he wants to win the mission. Talos, grotesques or Incubi.

Marines With Grav weapons I presume?

Assuming no allies you should take Grotesquerie and Dark Artisan with WWP. And Venoms to kill those marines to make way to the objective. Reavers work here too.

Any rules on who gets first turn?

For "fluff reasons" i cant use however the coven book, because the GM stated "one book for each player for...reasons". I think i will re-evaluate the talos, and i will bring a succubus and incubi i think.
My main fear is that he will deploy a lot of metal bawskes all around.
Unluckily the first turn must be rolled, and i have a lot of fear about droppodded dreddynougthy flames.

In addition the mission rules state that i MUST place in reserve all QG and heavy units, but i could enter/deploy on all the 4 side of the table.

EDIT: we play at 1500 points.

Will it be possible to Web Way inside the circle of marines?
Two archons with WWP and friends (Medusae/Incubi/Grots) Force him to split his focus inwards whilst at same timeyou use longer range firepower (Venoms/Ravager)

Take the Heamy book then. This time it will be better I think.

If it's 'one book per player' make sure he's not using anything from the Clan Rauukan book, like the Gorgon's Chain.

Aside from that, I'd say as many Ravagers as possible, Razorwings, Voidravens etc. You're basically looking to take out a fairly tightly packed group of units so anything with a large blast is going to be helpful.

No, sorry, i think i have expressed badly.
When we started the campaign, each ones choose a book, and retain it. Stop.
So, maybe the SM could not for one game choose the space dogs wolfs and ther return on the Sm book normally.

I've choose the standard DE book, so i am stick with it.

EDIT1: i am fairly undecided between the RWJ and the Bomber, mainly because the mission say that i MUST start heavy support in reserve and therefore bomber start in reserve however, while maybe the ravagers could arrive too late...

I will always say this is a good idea, but if you have packed in Marines, you want Medusae. In a vehicle, with a character with a WWP. Drop next to the Marines and just roast them.

As they're both flyers they have to start in reserve anyway.

It was that i was saying. Normally i would deploy ravagers (i found them more reliable) but this time i could deploy flyers due to the heavy support units special rule (they must start in reserve). therefore, using flyers, i am undecided between RWJ and VRB..

I'd say the RWJ as it's cheaper, although the bomb is potentially useful on the bomber.

With those restrictions I would not take pain engines as they would not get to do their job. But Grotesques and/or Incubi will be great. 3 units of those in the middle of his deployment zone will let your venoms and other stuff shoot freely for several turns.

Razorwing all the way. With Lances but no splinter cannon. Upgrade perhaps two missiles to S7. and try to get reroll reserves warlord trait form Strategic tree. (not DE one)

You definitely want to take two archon with WWP and Medusa units. They will be packed and this absolutely destroys them! Then two or three jets, maybe one bomber for the AP 2 blasts through scythe or missiles.
But Incubbi seem nice too for this case.

I've thought about a succubus w/ armour of misery and 4 incubus, maybe a second QG with a medusa bomb.
My fear is to found a lot of troops but inside a metal bawskes, so i've to blow up the boxes in order to reach their meaty troop.

I've also noticed that the Sm deploy 12" from the centre, and i deploy 18".
It means that i could turn-1 charge. This is because the book is from 4ed edition....

I've just read the mission (All-round Defence from the Battle Missions book) and yes, you could start your entire army (other than HQ and Heavy Support) 6" from the enemy. You also take it in turns to deploy units so you could go MSU and gain the advantage of positioning by deploying cheap units like Venoms first and then saving your heavy hitters until you know where the enemy is.

Since you can 1-turn charge them, I would be tempted to use wyches to tarpit them the time you can gain some PFP, to have big usefull grots.

i've thoughted that yet. However, i decided to go with 2 archont and no succubus, mostly because the possibility to disjoint the archon from incubi, blast a veichle (with blast pistol) and then see the incubi wrecking down it's passenger.

Archon with grotesques are far superior to Archon with Incubi. As DE lacks reliably way to destroy vehicles from range you can kill them in cc. And use Reavers to "burn" units inside them. I would take 2 units of grots and one unit of incubi.

unfortunately, i have zero models of grots, mostly because they're very costly and i don't like them...
