I am trying to decide which of these formations to use in a 2 detachment/formation 1850 list. The other detachment will be a CAD but I can't decide which formation is better when you will be facing a lot of vehicles in some lists or an all drop pod with lots of melta and flamer

Knowing what you plan on including in that CAD would be helpful.

They're both good formations.

Dark Artisan requires less very expensive models.

My first instinct was to say take them both Very Happy

But if you're restricted to two sources and want to run a CAD, then a good solution may be to run 3 x Talos in one Heavy slot and take the DA.  Give the Talos HWB or HL so you're still getting AT out of your heavy slot.  Move the Talos and the DA up together so they all get the 4+ FNP benefit.  If you make the DA your primary, you get the nice re-rolling 1's benefit for all of them as well.  Running them together means you're really only one Talos short of the Corpsethief and you get the best of both worlds, so to speak.

No you don't as the point of corpsthief is not having a truckload of Taloi but getting them to the front quite fast while scoring additional VP.
The heavy slot Talos doesn't do that. Also if you want to synergize the heavy Talos with the Cronos from Dark Artisan this also means that the Dark Artisan does not Deepstrike and has to walk.
Thats a lot of points bound in 2 immobile units that will hardly see any combat.

I love the thief. I take with cannon and flesh gauntlets. They destroy Gargantua's, other MCs and damb dear anything they touch. They are fun and scout kicks ass.

What you thinking for the cad?

Archon with blaster and wwp in a boat with blaster born.
Kabalites in venoms
Two razorwings
Scourges

2 ravagers should do you well.

Haven't run the points, but that should fit into an 1850 list

I'm considering taking two squads of two Taloi and one Dark Artisan to a tourney later in the month... I like the idea of having multiple tough units that won't die until my Grotesquerie hits the table.

CTC is pure win. It's biggest and often unnoted boon is that it's a gigantic bullet magnet. Why is this important? You run DE fool and those dudes don't like being shot. My one issue is the wracks, you can put those points to better use elsewhere.

I've run this configuration in both Maelstrom and Eternal War games and never had a issue with them being slow or hardly seeing combat.  In fact, they usually see a lot of combat and do quite well.  With proper deployment and objective placement, they've killed quite a bit, to include IK's.  Yes, they don't get the extra VPs that the Corpsethief does, which is a drawback and I recommended taking both if the OP wasn't restricted to two sources and wanted to take a CAD.

Corpsethief Claw formation wins me games. It is a bundle of undeniable destruction. I highly suggest the CCF!!!

How do you normally configure the Talos?

I love them as standard (30twin poison shots are great) or I like to add flesh gauntlets. Always wounding on 2s is nice and having insta death on 6s scares lots of MCs and gargantuan and characters.

I think you mean Ichor Injectors, not Flesh Gauntlets. I did some maths and chain flails cause more wounds against anything T7 or less and are cheaper but you do of course lose out on the ID attacks.

I'm modelling my CTC with 3 x Chainflails, 2 x Ichor Injectors and 5 x Twin-linked Haywire Blasters (magnetised to swap out for other weapon options).

Does no one bother with the twin linked Liquifier guns?

Not since the 7e codex. One of the worst weapons in the game and you pay (a lot of) extra points for it and lose a close combat attack!

I run mine with splinter and Ichor. They can effectively charge vehicles up to 12 to pop them with the number of attacks and usually you can get split charges in.

3 hits glancing on 5's isn't particularly effect imo. Very rare you have to actually be trying to wound AV12 though, as you hit rear armour in close combat. Generally just AV10's.

Well they have 2 close combat weapons and on the charge they would have 5 attacks each. But the whole point of the unit is to take out infantry in CC. Tying to use them as tank busters too I have found out is not wOrth it.
