PostSubject: Tactical warlord trait table   Tue Mar 10 2015, 12:07

When playing maelstrom missions (no variations, strait out of the rule book) is the tactical warlord trait table the most effective table to roll on?

As it effects the cards and therefore the objectives it seems like a no-brainer to me.

Id like to hear your thoughts about what table you usually roll on when playing maelstrom and what results you are hoping for.

Cheers.

EDIT - Im talking about maelstrom strait out of the RB or min variation like discarding impossible obj cards.

In what circumstances would you not roll on the tactical table?

What other table do you like the most and what result are you hoping for?

Not always.

It depends a lot on yuor and your opponents list, terrain and mission too. Even if not using combined eternal/mael mission. (And house rules, like discarding impossible cards right away)

With Deadlock it's worth it more that other missions as you can lock yourself no possibility to get new cards.

As @Vasara said it depends on your list, your opponents list and the mission. I like rolling on the Tactical Traits Table it with my Coven list, generally because I'm not too interested in the other tables and against a lot of armies I win by playing the mission.

Another thing to take into account is hat Special Detachments (real space raider etc) most of the time can only re-roll their own warlord traits and not the ones from the rule book, so you need to reduce the number of dud traits you can roll (as you don't have a re-roll to compensate).

In that regard I find almost all the Tactical Traits helpful, where as a lot of the other tables have a lot of traits that are useless or help my army very marginally.

Thanks Vasara. Have edited to clarify.

Every group I have played maelstrom missions with so far have allowed impossible cards to be discarded (eg:Kill an MC but the enemy army has no MCs, kill a flyer but the enemy army has no flyers etc). It's kind of the bare minimum modification to make maelstrom playable/fun. Otherwise its way too dependant on lucky draws.

Even with the above modification, I still find the Tactical table to be very useful.

That's cool. I play games that way around my locals too but not always. Edited again.

Either way I find tac to be the most useful.

I would still like to hear in what situations DE would not want to roll on tac and what other tables people like to roll on and why.

I like to roll on the dark eldar table for hopes of getting #2, Rerollable seize the initiative, Reroll night fight, and Reroll reserves.

I always roll on the Strategic table.
1 is very good for moving my vehicles around in terrain without immobilising (which they otherwise ALWAYS do).
3 is great for allowing me to get 3-4 venoms/raiders deployed just right.
4 is invaluable for the +1 to Seize and reroll reserves. I always have at least a flyer, and often also a deepstriking archon or two.
5 Can be very good, depending on your opponent.
6 Is great for Tau or Ork.

It's just a lot of good, possibly game-changing, options.

My problem with 1, is I play on a lot of boards that don't have ruins.

3 doesn't let you infiltrate vehicles, it specifically says non-vehicle units. Still good for infiltrating talos. Very Happy

I try to strike a balance between an army that I am excited about because it is flavorful and thematic, and an army that has a snowball's chance of winning is good. I will always have HQs that I've spent excessive time converting and painting, who have names and short backstories and possibly a bit more wargear than is points-efficient, because doing so increases my enjoyment of the game. Similarly, I'd like them to have suitably flavorful warlord traits, so I always go with ones out of our codex or codex supplement.

If the time comes when my army is getting stomped into the insulation foam in every game, then I'll grudgingly scale back the character of my characters. Thankfully, for the time being I'm doing pretty well (maybe I just haven't encountered a truly competitive army or cheesemonkey opponent yet), so I can focus on the things that bring me the most enjoyment.

It doesn't "let you infiltrate" anything. It gives the Warlord and 3 non-vehicle units the Infiltrate rule. A unit of Kabalite Warriors, for example, qualifies as a non-vehicle unit, and thus can be given Infiltrate. and as stated in the Infiltrate rule: "If a unit with Infiltrate deploys inside a Dedicated Transport, they may Infiltrate along with their Transport."

Personally, I prefer one of my Formation haemmy's to be the Warlord, so I can get a non-random trait to plan around. I find the Coven formation traits more useful than the Tactical ones.

with my msu army yes. I went against a daemon player in malestrom and he kept getting the ones he was on and I couldn't get anything feasible. I lost by only 1 because I could discard 2 a turn instead of the normal 1.

Ahh, completely missed that dedicated transports benefit from infiltrate this edition, nice catch. Wink

You can let the Kabalite inside Infiltrate.
As the Venom is a dedicated Transport, the Kabalites will confer it to the Venom.

The problem is the Warlord in the new rules... if he gets infiltration you can't deploy him with a non-infiltrator anymorem so you basically have to use it on his unit too.

So has anyone else noticed the synergies between the regular DE Book's Warlord Traits and a Haemy as your general?  They're not all perfect, but they seem to generally be somewhat useful to a Haemy instead of an Archon.  Maybe not for everyone, but I go against an Ork Warboss with Lucky Stikk so the WS is nice on the Haemy, fearless makes a lot of your army fearless until the PFP from the coven book kicks in on turn 2, fear stacks with the -1 from Spectacle, the adding/subtracting for reserves is nice, and the combat buffs are nice if you plan on getting your Haemy into combat with a Grot unit.

As far as I know, rampage from the Sump, and Rage stack right? With a simple Scissorhand or Gauntlet, that's not all bad.
