As above I think the key to understanding the bit of wording that burning eye picks out is the ATSKNF part: ie a rule that one model has which doesn't (I dont believe) confer to the rest of the unit? In that case wounds could go against guardsmen, but when they get to the ATSKNF the rest go to wast .

Correct me any smurf players please if I'm wrong on this?

ATSKNF doesn't confer to other models no (just to make is clear though - I play Iron Fists not Ultramarines... Smile )

it doesnt really matter they are both some equisite playthings, but to be more on topic whats the conclusion? can i fear the brick out of guardsmen blob with a priest or a fearless char in, or scare gaunts to drop their biomass?

I didn't see this mentioned (may have missed it, sorry).

Tyrannid Synapse is on a model basis. So while only 1 model needs to be within Synapse to address Instinctive Behavior, only the actual models within Synapse range gain Fearless - not the entire unit. So Nids are fairly vulnerable to Soul Freight as well.

Soul Freight comes after soul fright surely? That's how they get the souls back to Commorragh?

While I do agree with the interpretation of unaffected models being only those particular ones who have the Fearless special rule, and not necessarily those in the unit affected by it, the effects of fearless (and zealot [i think]) allow those affected by it to automatically pass morale and leadership tests, right?

And Soulfright causes a unit to take a leadership test, right?

So.. wouldn't the affect of fearless and such cause the unit to automatically pass the soulfright test anyway?  I may have missed that bit of discussion, and I don't have my book with me, so it's possible that fearless and AJSD;FD only apply to morale tests which would make them fair game again.

The Fearless and Zealot rules don't cite Leadership tests explicitly - just Pinning, Fear, Regroup tests and Morale checks.

So anything that is a leadership test outside of those items listed is still a threat to the models.

A leadership test is a characteristics test, like a toughness test or strength test. Fearless only lets you pass three types of tests that are leadership based. A model doesn't get to rerole their strength test because they have the shred special rule.
Think of it this way, a farseer doesn't automatically pass perils tests because it is fearless because of the shard or anaris. Same principle.

Sorry this is a bit off-topic, and a bit of a necro, but I just haven't been able to find an answer to this question anywhere yet.

This issue came up in a game yesterday, before my opponent's Farsight bomb systematically disassembled my poor pirates; Does a unit failing a soulfright test also have to fall back, as they failed their leadership?

We concluded that it was a separate test, therefore his firewarriors wouldn't have to fall back, lest they lost 25% and had to take a test for that instance, but I'm still uncertain on this and was more so agreeing in his favor just to keep the already long game moving.

So, my dear pointy-eared scoundrels, what's your take on this?

Testing for Soulfright is not a Morale test, so you played it correctly.

Indeed, it's morale checks that make you fall back, not all leadeship-based tests

Alrighty, makes sense.

Sometimes I can't tell if the fact that I've been playing 40k for 8 years and still am uncertain on some of this more basic stuff says something about me, or just that there's just too many rules to remember. Smile

Too right, I've been playing through since 2nd edition and my brain isn't what it was then. I think what makes it slightly worse is that 6th-7th there were a lot of little changes that went unnoticed until you really looked in detail (like deep striking now being combat speed instead of cruising speed, minor wording change but massive effect).

Hello, there. Could u please clear one thing to me? Does this wording: "Soulfright: At the end of the Shooting phase, a unit that has suffered one or more hits from a weapon with this special rule in that phase must make a Leadership test." means that any ammount of Soulfright hits made during one shooting phase to one certain unit would cause only ONE Leadership test and as a result will only once deal dmg (wounds)?

That's correct as it applies to "one or more hits" so no matter how many times you hit someone with a weapon like this they only have to take the test once.

Also consider this, one unit getting hit at least once needs to take a test. If you're lucky and your blast scatters and hits 1 or more models from 2 different units, both of those units need to take 1 test each.

All right, thank you. Probably, spamming one strong unit with several soulfright weapons would be too overpowered =)
