PostSubject: Playing against IG   Sat Aug 13 2011, 10:43

Might not be in the right section, sorry if it isnt, and move it to the correct if it isnt.

Now, I play 3 list basiclly. 2 Kabal lists, one that looks much like Dashofpeppers, and one with 10x Warriors in raiders insteed and with Incubis. The last Is the one I have played most, Cult list posted a while ago in Army list. 7x Wyches in Raider, and Blastborns with the usual Heamonculi and Ravangers.

With all 3 lists I table most of my friends, now one of my friends changed from Necrons to Imperial Guard, and having abit of a problem. Now I have to say that the matches I have played against the dices have been against me, but so have it been in other matches and still won.

So I thought I seek some advice from players that are more experienced than me against IG, how do you play against them? what to watch out for?

Whats in the IG list? They are probably the hardest list for us to play against. Multiple vehicles with plenty of long range and mobile short range firepower that can and will tear us apart.

Getting a first turn Alpha strike will help but is no guarentee of victory, even with a good round of shooting there may well still be muliple threats on the board.
Try to limit return fire with terrain and screening, attacking on 1 flank may help. However if he is running melta vets in vendettas the flanks may not be that safe.
In general if I see Hydra's on the board they are my first target. Long range first working down the ranges is how I would go but it really depends on what he is using.

TBH I havent figure out how to mow down IG heavy mech list my friend is playing.
First of all cuz he have 6-7 vehicles in 1k game, loads of chimeras, and some hydras....and boy its pain in butt when each wepon he have can blast your raider out of sky. Plus his heavy weapon teams wich add another bunch of autocanons. Rant over.

What might help is WWP list. It will deny him his fire power.

I usualy refuse to play with that list so he might try come with somthing else than no brain IG list.

What type of IG list is he playing, that's really the first question - IG can do a couple of different and pretty solid lists and for specific advice one would need to know the list.

In general - I feel the fire suppression, weight of lance output, and successful 1st turn tactics are the key to beating IG.

1. You need to bring a lot of your guns to bear on Turn 1 and shoot the hell out of him.
2. You need to fire in a way that denies him the most return fire shooting at you.
3. and you need to position yourself in a way that further limits his ability to hurt you.

1. Primary goal is the ability to get your army in range to allow as many units as possible to hurt him. With our speed this shouldn't be too difficult. Depending on deployment you might be able to swing an assault, and a giant goal is getting lots of lances up into play.

2. When shooting your primary consideration should be - what can hurt me, how can it hurt me, how can I stop it? So you want to shoot at things most capable of hurting your army (if you are mech, you shoot anti-mech units, ect. ect.) You however want to also understand the threat, so you never shoot it more than you need to (A Chimera that is stunned and shaken by your shooting doesn't need to be shot anymore unless you're *really* scared of the passengers getting out. It's a transport that can't move, and a gun platform that can't shoot. It's "dead" for a turn - shoot the next Chimera and don't worry about this one till next turn again.

3. Terrain, speed, lines of fire. Try to put your army down in a way that you are fighting with everything, and he has some units he can't bring to bear. This is *hard* to do vs. IG, but units on foot like Veteran Squads with meltas, can be limited by simple moving your army far enough back they can't get in range. Units like a HWS can be limited if you use a piece of terrain to block their sight, forcing them to move or stay put, but in either case denying them shooting this turn.

As you can see, the basic answer is, always be hurting him, and try to limit his ability to hurt you - which is, sadly, the strategy vs. everyone...but it's very important to use versus IG because our other strategy of 'too many targets to kill' doesn't work as well vs. them.

I can give clearer advice if I can see his list.
I can give even better advice if I can see yours too and hear about your basic tactics vs the enemy list.

I've found that Beastmaster packs with a bunch of Razorwing flocks are fantastic for tearing apart infantry blobs, and Talos are effective armor crackers (more so than lances against anything other than a Land Raider).

Imperial Guard are where Reavers really come into their own, and you usually want them to be headhunting (more specifically, command and heavy weapons squads). Against almost every Guard build that doesn't revolve around Veterans (and even some that do), the loss of orders capability early on can really hurt a Guard player's ability to maximize the amount of damage he can do to you.

Just remember that the small, elite killer units like Incubi are going to be overwhelmed by the number of attacks Guard can pull off in close combat (make no mistake about it, while a single Guardsman may be puny, 30 of them can be pretty frightening, especially if they have a Commissar with them). For close combat you'll either want Wyches (who, especially with Hydra Gauntlets can get off enough attacks to match or beat their numbers) or some of the Haemonculae constructs (Talos and Cronos are good, as most Guardsmen can't wound them at all). Razorwing fighters are also effective at utterly wiping a platoon off the table in a single round of shooting if equipped properly.

However, the biggest hurdle is definitely the amount of armor they can bring to bear; it is very easily possible for an Imperial Guard list to bring as many Chimeras as we have darklights. Granted, such a list wouldn't exactly be competitive (as there would be no other unit upgrades), but it would certainly be a tough nut to crack.

I dont know the specific list.

But he runs something like this:

1-3 Chimeras (he changes that abit from game to game)
3 Leaman russ with a str 8 ordenance.
Ordenance master
Lot of troops with Multi melta or Plasma. (He has commissars with him)
and lot of artillary units with lascannon
And usually a sentinel

Thats ususaly teh basic of the list. Tanks and lot and lot of veichles.

Hmmm try beasts, with good set up you can have charge on 1st turn. This might make him panic so its win for you.

2xbeasts packs
reavers
2xravages
razorwing

and maybe some wariors/blasterborns in DS raidersvenoms

Your best bet is to, like Thor said, Target priority. Those Russes and Mantacores??? lance to death. Stun is all you need, once that is achieved, move on. Those HWTs and blob squads??? Venoms put out amazing shots for their points values. You basically just have to stun and shake him till he cries, while you slowly widdle away his bubble wraping and look at each tank kill as one less thing you have to do next turn.
