PostSubject: Scourges and heavy weapons: 4 in 5   Tue Sep 30 2014, 13:31

Hi, just wanted to say that I read a new comment on the leaked german codex.
The guy who got the codex says he(she?) is 99% sure that scourges are allowed to take four heavy weapons independent of the unit's size.

Looks like we got our haywire back right there!

Also said was that also bloodbrides don't get HW except the syren. Which confuses me because aren't Hekatrixes who still have HW supposed to be bloodbrides?

Also the Hellion-stunclaw is probably gone ... Sad (not sure about that)

I cannot say anything before I get the codex this weekend. But if so, a scourge squad shooting four haywire blasters inside a Martyrs Bunker may be my lovely AT option.

Although we've already have a post for the rumor-based discussion, IMHO this post would be good place to talk about our new scourges and their role after the release of new codex.

If this is true, it's possibly my favourite rumour. Mainly because it means I can convert up two five man units of scourges with lots of lovely heavy weapons!

If this is true i cannot wait, 6 units of deep striking scourges with haywire will ruin anyone's day!

If this is true, it might salvage the codex in my eyes. I LOVE Scourges, love them, yet... they were always outshined. Now, they might become agile Havocs, especially if the rumour about Dark Lances becoming cheaper is true! This is wonderful news!

Just remember that they won't be able to fire the Dark Lances on the move as they're not gonna get relentless. This may be the excuse I need to get my next box of scourges though!

Well, they can sit somewhere and act as a poor man's Ravager, or just drop/jump with Heatlances and Blasters.

Haywire blasters are the most reliable option, anything short of 4 hull points is unlikely to survive a turn unless they get lucky with saves (which if you're dropping in anyway they shouldn't do!)

You're assuming Scourges are BS10 and enemy doesn't have a cover save, while in fact scourges will score only 2 or 3 hits most of the times...

4*2/3*5/6 = 40/18 ~2,2 HP/squad. That's before covers.

I'd like to see the costs of course, but Blasters are better in a sense that they can sear everything - vehicles, monsters, infantry, therefore making unit more universal... and there is a chance of explosion due to AP2.

No, I'm assuming that three of my four haywire blasters hit (not unreasonable) and that those three hits all roll a 2+ for the haywire effect = dead 3HP vehicle, which then creates LoS block for your scourges. as I said if you do it right, the vehicle should be getting a cover save anyway.

If I don't manage to roll those, I can always loan a bit of firepower from elsewhere to make sure. Quite frankly, I don't care about blowing a vehicle up so long as it dies, it's now such a long shot anyway.

Edit: for anyone that's interested I just rolled it, and from 10 attempts i scored a 70% kill rate on a 3HP vehicle, assuming no cover.

I this maybe enough to save the codex for me... how many points do you think they will shave off their price? 5 or 6? That would put them around the cost of hawks...

crap happens.... for one Scatter is a big thing when deepstriking and bubble wrapping is common.
But my dice hate me anways... 6 Hawks assaulting a Wyvern. 6 hits from HWG -> 1 Hull point lost.

Except if they come out of a WWP they don't scatter. You can be 1" away.

Dice are like that, I took 8 wounds on a unit of 7 terminators from lasguns in one game, and failed 6 of the saves. That doesn't make the terminators a bad option, it just means I got unlucky.

2+ is not autopass. Avg. amount of hits is slightly lower than 3, it's 8/3 ~ 2+2/3 (freak decimals when we're talking about dice rolls).

Or, may be it'll be more helpful to present it in a following way:
N of hits Probability
4__________19,7%
3__________39,5%
2__________29,6%
1__________9,8%
0__________1,2%

So, chance of hitting at least 3 times is 59,2%. And haywires are pretty much useless for anything but hp stripping

if they strip out having to take 10 to get 4 heavy weapons, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they don't drop points at all. 110 for the min squad plus weapons, so 150 in total? I'd take that. Their success rate is better than a 5 man devastator squad with 4 lascannons, for the same price, it's only range that hurts us, which deep strike solves.

WAY too much points spent.
Thats an Haemy (cheapest HQ option) + 35 points for WWP + the scourges who could have deepstruck anyways.

WWP for them works only as Heatlance delivery IMO. That's not cost efficient, but blowing up that Lemon Russian which can otherwise destroy your other DS'ing units with templates is usually worth wasting a few dozen points.

Also, if there are SH in your metagame... to the bedlam with scourges, just deepstrike 10 firedragons.

this is rather good news, makes having multiple Scourge squads a rather terrifying prospect.

If you really need to blow super heavy vehicles, Fire Dragons will be better IMO. Because AP matters. Their explosion will probably frak up even WG... but army of your opponent won't be happy to be hit by THAT neither.

This I can get behind. It's not awfully broken to begin with, and in the fluff (see Rise of Vect)

Well, Wraithguards with flamers, precision deepstrike and Spiritseer is probably what most people will rightfully call "Cheese"... especially if they come in numbers greater than 10.

I have always loved Scourges, the unit and especially the models, so this possibility does have me stoked. I already have two 10-man squads, one still unpainted, and on a whim (OK, maybe wishful thinking) I bought two more boxes a couple of weeks ago in advance of the inevitable price hike.

So, together with my Mandrakes, I guess I have plenty of painting to do in the near future!
